Patriacia Wrede's Chronicles of the Enchanted Forest

This series is one I recommend to a lot of people who like fairy tales and fairy-tale based stories. Princess Cimorene is absolutely fed up with all the rules that go along with being a princess and decides, after being told, once again that she CAN'T do something (b/c princesses just don't do that) that she may just have to take matters into her own hands. What ensues is hilarious--and if you know your fairy tales, you'll start recognizing the references to various tales and characters. These are funny books--Cimorene is a strong female character--and they are funny. All that said, anyone know of any other series that may be like this? Sisters Grimm is the first one that comes to mind, but surely there are others. . . .???

I love the Enchanted Forest series. I'd recommend Diana Wynne Jones' books, if you liked this series. Her books are regular fantasy, not fairy tale adaptations. But I think you'll enjoy her sense of humor in the Derkholm series: Dark Lord of Derkholm (bk 1), Year of the Griffin (bk 2).

They're not really fairy tales but have you tried any of Tamora Pierce's Books? The first set is call "The Song of The Lioness Quartet." Its about a girl who decide to become an knight. They're set in an medevailish era.

You might want to give Sarah Beth Durst's book Into the Wild a try. The heroine is the daughter of fairy tale escapee Rapunzel and has "the Wild" living under her bed. Until it escapes and she has to rescue her mother and all the other fairy tale characters. The second book Out of the Wild is about to come out and I'm looking forward to it.
Another good author for fairy tale lovers is Cameron Dokey, while not as funny as Wrede's stuff she's been writing a great series of retold fairy tales. So far she's done-
Beauty Sleep (Sleeping Beauty)
Storyteller's Daughter (Scheherazade)
Golden (Rapunzel)
Before Midnight (Cinderella)
& Sunlight and Shadow (The Magic Flute)

You may like the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. It's not a retold fairy tale, but it's set in a preserve for fairy tale beings.
