Greetings! I'm new to Shelfari, but just joined Shades of Love and wanted to introduce myself. My first picture book, BIRD, came out last fall and we were thrilled to win several honors and awards: Lee & Low New Voices Honor Award, ALA Notable Book, Kirkus Reviews Best of 2008, Ezra Jack Keats New Illustrator Award, and the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent (the last two went to Shadra Strickland, my amazing illustrator). I'm now trying to get my self-published YA novel, A Wish After Midnight, into young readers' hands, and would appreciate any contacts or advice you might have. I'm happy to provide review copies to librarians, and trailers for both my books can be found at my blog, www.zettaelliott.wordpress.com. I know that self-published books are generally dismissed by adults, but consider the statistics: according to the Cooperative Children's Book Center, less than 3% of children's books published in 2007 were authored by African Americans. I'm looking for a "third way" to get my stories into the world...any and all ideas are welcome!
