I really have no idea what you mean precisely with Urban Fantasy. I am now reading the GhostWalker series by Christine Feehan, and loving it!

From Wikipedia: Urban fantasy is a subset of contemporary fantasy, consisting of magical novels and stories set in contemporary, real-world, urban settings--as opposed to 'traditional' fantasy set in wholly imaginary landscapes, even ones containing imaginary cities, or having most of their action take place in them. Urban fantasy may also refer to more modern versions of 'traditional' fantasy worlds. The modern urban fantasy protagonist faces extraordinary circumstances as plots unfold in either open (where magic or paranormal events are commonly accepted to exist) or closed (where magical powers or creatures are concealed) worlds.

Some examples of urban fantasy authors are:
Laurell K. Hamilton, Yasmine Galenorn, Patrica Briggs, and Kelley Armstrong, just to name a few.

Urban Fantasy as opposed to traditional fantasy takes place in the real world rather than the a fantasy setting. I would describe it more as a form alternate reality, our current reality with an added element of fantasy. The current trend is dark in nature - example: a vampire subculture - but I suppose it really doesn't have to be.

Yes. I have read the Dark series first, the Carpathians, also the Drake Sisters. The only one waiting for me is The Lair of the Lion, and I am being very frugal with it, not wanting to have nothing from Feehan left to read. lol

I loved Feehan's Carpathian series. Her Drake sisters started out strong but they don't grab you the way the Carpathian's did. When I got to what was the last book (at that time) Dark Celebration, I made myself take at least 3 days to read it as I didn't want the series to end. I actually felt like a good friend had died when I realized that I had read them all and had no more. I have been saving the Ghostwalker series as I wanted some of her books to read at a later date.
I loved the way that Feehan created another whole world(within our world) for the Carpathians.

I've jumped on the bandwagon and I'm reading "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer, even though I'm 24 there's a lot to enjoy in it. :) Next up I'm going to be reading "Lover Revealed" in J.R. Ward's BDB series, which is very addictive. I just finished "Changeling", the 2nd Sisters of the Moon series by Yasmine Galenorn. I LOVE that series, it's more urban/paranormal fantasy than the paranormal romance it's marketed as, it's just terrific and unique. In the near future I'm looking forward to reading from my TBR pile- Rachel Vincent's werecat series (Stray & Rogue), Jeanine Frost, Patricia Brigg's "Mercy" series, Meljean Brook's "Demon Angel", Nalini Singh, Kim Harrison, Lara Adrian and Cheyenne McCray's series (though I need book one of McCray's series), to name most :) Yep, I'm addicted...

The "Twilight" bandwagon is a good one to jump on, in my opinion. I am 25 but I enjoyed all three so far very much, and I am really looking forward to the fourth book to come. Stephenie Meyer is also writting a compainion to her first book through Edwards eyes. That should be very intresting.
I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I just finished 'Lover Enshrined' but my favorites are 'Dark Lover, Lover Awakened and Lover Revealed'. Please let me know what you thought of 'Lover Revealed' when you are finished and which BDB book is your favorite.

Right now I'm reading The Host by Stephanie Meyer. I admit I love the Twilight Saga and understand why it's rated PG (for lack of a better way to describe) for the YA crowd but The Host is supposedly an adult novel but is still PG. I guess I expected more substance and more adult situations. I read an article where she says that romance and sex doesn't need to be explicit and I agree as far as Twilight, the sexual tension etc, but for adult reading, the dancing around the topic she does just gets old. The book is still good and I'm not finished with it yet but she definitely has YA style that she's sticking with.

Hi Evie, I agree with you completely. I was expecting some more adult situations in this book- but it felt like I was reading a sci-fi Ya novel. It didn't have the same kind of draw in that Twilight did, and was very hard to get into. Well- I hesitate to say it for fear I might be getting my head chopped off... I by no means mean to offend anyone here- but I'm positive we can attribute her YA styled writing to her religious orientation. She has admitted that being LDS influences the kind of values that she instills in her characters and her writing just in general. (not that it is a bad thing for the YA crowd- however it seems to limit the appeal in what you might term 'adult fiction').

I'm really looking forward to book #7 in MaryJanice Davidson's Undead series featuring Queen Betsy. It is funny urban fantasy. Undead and Unwed is the first one where Betsy Taylor celebrates her birthday by being fired and then hit by a truck only to wake up 3 days later as a vampire and discovers that her hated step-mother has stolen her shoe collection. Along the way she meets other vampires, werewolves, fiends and even a ghost. I look forward to a new one each summer.

I do love the entire series, but my favorites are Wrath, Butch and Zsadist. I find myself drawn to finding out what happens with John Matthew. Has anyone else noticed when thinking of him, that all the characters refer to him as John Matthew, not just John. For some reason, I always thought John was his first name, and Matthew was his middle or last. Does anyone know for sure? I can't remember. I just kind it bugs me a little every time I notice it.
I'm really looking forward to her 7th book, 'An Insider's Guide'. Amoung other things, it is supposed to have short stories about our favorite characters that J.R.Ward couldn't fit into her other books.

Well, for urban fantasy I don't think you can go wrong with the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher. Not much in the way of romance, but great supernatural-meets-everyday-life type writing. I've found most of the better UF/"Dark Fantasy" stuff in our Sci-Fi section of the library, so you might try your local branch.

As others have mentioned, Patricia Briggs is good. I'd also check out the Weather Warden series by Rachel Caine, the Women of Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong, Vickie Pettersson and Karen Chance.

Just checked out the latest 3 in the Argenau series by Lynsay Sands. Also received the unhappy news that due to rising property taxes, our library won't be open on weekend this summer. Not a huge issue as we tend to go through the week anyway, but I also usually rent my movies there because it's cheaper and that is something we do on weekends.

I love Nora Roberts, have you read The Circle Trilogy?, I found it great. I'm about to star in this Sign of Seven Trilogy, hope it's just as great!

I finished the Immortals book which was good although it didn't inspire me to run out and get the next one. I probably will read the rest of the series but it is one I'm content to wait on.

Over this past weekend I read The Devil's Knight by Lucy Blue which is part of her Decendants of Darkness series. It was pretty good, I really enjoy her writing and her vampires. I'm looking forward to the next one.

I finished Real Vampires Live Large yesterday. As mentioned earlier, I didn't love the first book in this series, but I very much enjoyed the second book. It's light, sarcastic, funny, sexy, suspenseful and had a few surprises that I did not see coming.

I skimmed thru and didn't see Kelley ARmstrong's books (I think). Anyway, just finished Personal Demon and really enjoyed it. If you haven't read any "women of the otherworld" - maybe start with Dime Store Magic?

I went through the Handeland novels like popcorn, lol. They're not bad, but they're mostly quick reading.

I just finished Playing With Fire by Katie MacAllister and am almost done reading Dark Desires After Dark by Kresley Cole. I thought that playing with fire was very good except for the lack of ending. It was totally a "to be continued" ending UGH!
DDAD is the 5th book in Cole's series and the first book I have read by her. I rarely read things out of order but this one called to me. When a books comes-a-calling you just can't ignore it. This book is fabulous. Steamy hot and incredibly thrilling. If this is typical of this author I have just found another must buy and must keep author.

In the last month I've read the two newest in the Kresley Cole Immortals After Dark series....Lover Enshrined by J.R. Ward (yeah...I actually called in late to work on Wed so I could finish that one!!), Dance with the Devil by Sherilyn Kenyon and the anthology Shifter (which introduced me to Alyssa Day) and now I'm reading the Atlantis Warrior books by Alyssa Day.

So what did you think of "Lover Enshrined"? I've heard a lot of passionate mixed reviews on it so far, it seems pretty controversial!

I thouroughly enjoyed it! I didn't come to the series as a romance fan; I came to it as a vampire fan. A lot of the folks disappointed with the book complain that there's not that much romance in it and I can see their point BUT that didn't take away from the story, for me. I enjoyed the plot progression and character development of some of the secondary characters.

I finished Lover Enshrined this weekend, and loved it. The plotlines, not the romance part. Cause there hardly was any. But still, a great read.

I'm actually really liking the other plotlines aside from the central romance. It gives the book some depth, imo.

I recently finished "Darkling" by Yasmine Galenorn, the third book in the Sisters of the Moon series- I LOVED it and highly recommend them (the other 2 are Witchling then Changeling.) Right now I'm reading "Don of the Dead" by Casey Daniels, which is kind of a humerous mystery/ghost story paranormal. I just started "Stray" by Rachel Vincent as well, which is a were/shapeshifting paranormal. I just started it but so far I'm liking it, the writing style is very cool.
