Welcome to Book Chat!

Instead of being about a particular book, author or genre this group is about books and reading in general. Hi, I have 3 children and my husband and I farm in South Central, KS. I also work as a paraeducator in the high school. I have always loved to read and will read almost anything! I love most all subjects and genres. If it's good- let me at it! I don't read as much as I used to as having 3 children all involved in sports and 4-H keeps me very busy. One of my favorite things is the Kindle my husband bought me for Christmas 2 years ago since it allows me to take a book with me all the time for reading whenever I am waiting on a child or my husband.

    I'm Shawna, and I'm baaaaaaack!
After being away from Shelfari while finishing my BA, I am finally done and back to leisurely reading! I am so excited!
So, the abbreviated version of my intro is such:
I'm a Navy wife & pet parent. I have a BA in Language and Lit, but I still don't know what the heck I'm going to do with my life. I love to read just about anything except romance or fantasy.

Hi I'm Katie, or Kate. I've been absentee for quite awhile so hi again to everybody I know and people I don't know yet. Hoping to get back into the swing of things reading wise but having a hard time finding something to hold my attention.

I am 34, as of today, work for the prosecutors office, live with my boyfriend, no pets but love dogs. That's about it I guess. :-)

Hi, I'm Carly. I am a teacher-librarian working in an elementary school so my life is filled with books (mostly picture books!). I spend a lot of time reading YA titles so I can recommend books to our middle school kids and hopefully get them interested in reading. I like to read lots of different genres. I'm also crazy about cats but I'm not a crazy cat lady!! I have a wonderful husband and 3 teenage boys.

Me, too! Hi Carly! I'm a teacher and a cat lover. I read like a librarian so I can make recommendations to my students as well. I have to be careful because I teach gifted kids. Intellectually they are on a middle school reading level, emotionally they're not. It makes it hard sometimes to fit them with appropriate books. But it sure is fun trying.

I read some YA, but mostly it is too whiny & dramatic for me...

      Save Changes Cancel

You have to find the right y/a to avoid the whiney stuff; I often just read the ones my daughters say are particularly good or the more literary ones. I don't mind some of the drama, but I couldn't make a steady diet of y/a. One I read last year that was released as a y/a in NZ where it was written but not here that is neither of those is Genesis by Bernard Beckett. It's written much like a Socractic dialogue, is very philosophical (deals with what is consciousness) but is also considered scifi, and technically it is--I enjoyed reading Socratic dialogues (one of my quirks, I guess, although I can't say I agreed with much of it) so that made it more enjoyable for me.

Reading is like living in your imaginary world that you don't know whats going to happen, while writing is like you creating a world for someone to live in permanently. That's my idea of reading! Welcome. What kinds of books do you like to read? I haven't read the 2 on your shelf so far, so am not sure what to recommend. Books we liked enough this year to give as holiday gifts are:

Genesis by Bernard Beckett (y/a in New Zealand) which is a scifi novel written like a Socratic dialogue
The Housekeeper and the Professor (Japanese novel, adult) to my mother who likes literary and mainstream novels
The Lost Island of Tamarind and its sequel. These are for a bit younger crowd.

      The Kiki Strike books

Jane Austen and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor is the only Austen spin off I've liked. In it Jane Austen is a detective; it's a mystery series. Adult.

There's more, but these are a few.

I could suggest lots of recent ones, but I don't know if you've already read them. Some of them are obvious, just because they are so popular: The Hunger Games, The Help (well, those are what's coming immediately to mind...)

My Shelfari shelf contains the books that I've read (or plan to read) since joining and does not at all reflect my overflowing shelves and TBR piles at home. Can't say much about myself or it would sound like spam *winks at Auntie* but I can say I have been addicted to books since I first read Dick and Jane (Run, Spot, run!)...Since learning that those squiggles on the paper with the pretty pictures were actually words telling a story, reading became my obsession for half a century, so far.

I also grew up seeing my mom reading and doing crossword puzzles and also my older sister. So it just seemed natural to always have a book around. Today I still read everywhere, at the bus stop, on the bus, in the line at the check out counter, you name it.........

I read anything Fiction, Science Fiction, Historical Fiction, and sometimes even Non-Fiction (if forced too). I read anytime I have the time more in the summer than during the school year. I am currently reading a fiction book. My favorite book series is The Caster Chronicles by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. My favorite book at the moment is The Host by Stephanie Meyer. I am a Potterhead. I love Star Trek and found a Star Trek book that I am nearly through now.

Hi my name is Gayle, and Auntie Nan is the one who invited me. I read a really eclectic book list, primarily historical fiction, but I like everything from SF to mysteries. All depends on the day. I am retired and I live with my hubby, a dog, and 2 cats, in the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada, in Central California. I am 25 miles south of Yosemite. I have been retired since 2002, and am a recent graduate of CalStateUniv Fresno where I got my BA in History. On to CSU San Jose for a MA in Library Sciences, which I will do on-line as the school is 400 miles from me, a really long commute.

Gayle..... not to be a snob or anything: They call it: MLIS..... I say this because I finished mine in 2007!

Also I enjoyed the online classes..... I found them easier (as I work full-time)... I don't particularly like working at a physical classroom pace (or even being in one).... Being able to work on my own schedule (12:00-2:00 am & Sundays) was really wonderful for me. Also, I was able to work in my p.j.s & drink wine as I pleased!

Only prob for me will be the cost, so I have an MLIS fund started. The classes are $350 per unit and each class is 3 units, soo . . . . Plus the cost of applying to the univ, transcripts and hoping I'm accepted. Probably a couple of years down the road at this point.

Question: has anybody or does anybody read Stephen Lawhead's books??
