      Hi.

Usually, you would go by the wish list. I do remember during Christmas in July, someone posted that he or she didn't have a wish list per say, her wish list was actually her "to be read" list.

In Secret Santa in 2008, the person assigned to me had no wish list, so I made a list of what appeared to be favorite authors. (I looked at her books by ranking (stars). (A favorites (heart) list helps with this, too.) (Looking up books by ranking, and then by author helped me to figure out who and what to avoid, too.) I also pulled a sneaky. I messaged my santa, said that I liked her books, and a few other things, then asked her about her favorite authors and types of books she liked. It was fun.

But, a wish list certainly helps!!!!!!!

Hi, Julie. I think it would be really great if you joined. ;-D

You're santa may need to fill out and attach a green customs slip to the package, but those should be available at any post office. I just sent a book to a US military address, so my package required a customs slip. It only took a couple of minutes to fill out. I think that shipping to another country would be similiar. My postal clerk was very helpful telling me exactly what to do.

Hi, all. I am fine with Canada, too.

The only preceivable problem that I can think of is that sometimes mail and packages going to and from out of the country sometimes take longer...sometimes considerably longer....to get to where they are going. This may apply to military (APO, AE, etc) addresses as well.

I don't think that Canada requires a green custom sticker, but I am not at all sure. I also don't think that packages going out of country cost more than regular media mail (I recommend this for larger...length and width...paperbacks and definately those heavy, poderous hardcovers)...but often the smaller mass market paperbacks (small length and width), can go cheaper first class, and get there, at least within the USA, a day or two quicker than media mail. It depends on overall weight of the package.

I hope I don't come off as a know-it-all, because I am not. It is just that I belong to an on-line used book trade club (I am not sure if I should say which one here), so I have about a year's worth of experience mailing and receiving within the USA.

One thing that the book trade club recommends in wrapping, which I think is a good idea, and I will pass on, is to wrap the book in plastic. I usually use supermarket produce bags (empty and clean, of course! ROFL!), but often others use saran wrap (sp?), plastic sandwich or storage bags, and sometimes store plastic carry bags. I have also used the empty plastic wrappers that contained packages of manilla envelopes (good for mailing books), and even bread wrappers (with all the crumbs shaken out, of course, or turned wrong-side out.)

The reason for the plastic. Well...right off the top of my head...because I live in the soggy Pacific Northwest...RAIN! But, besides helping protect the book from inclimate weather or other damage, others have suggested that the plastic might help hold the book together maybe, protect the cover and pages if the package is roughly handled. I don't know about that, but it couldn't hurt, and it adds hardly anything at all to the package weight.

Hope this helps. Sorry for going on and on again.

We sell items on ebay from time to time and have sent items to Canada. Yes, it does take the green sticker because although we are on the same continent, it is a different country.

Esther, if you can not send a book out, then you can't participate. It wouldn't be fair to others. We don't require you to buy a book, but you MUST be able to participate by sending a book. For now I will not put you down. I understand that times are tough right now, but this is supposed to be a fun activiity for Christmas. It's not fun if everyone doesn't participate equally.

I agree with Tenia, if you can't send a book, you can't receive a book. It's not fair. I too understand times are tough, I lost my job in September. I plan to send a book I have in my collection or maybe picking a book up at a garage sale, flea market etc. Let us know what you plan to do.

      Hi!

When you look up a book on Shelfari, you get a little green "edit" button under the picture of the cover. The options, on the top, in check boxes beside them, are" To be Read", "Reading Now", and "I have read". Well, the wording might be slightly different.

Below the checked boxes are three icons. You click on them if you want to. If you run the cursor over then, they will tell you what they are for.

The first looks like a valentine heart: Favorite. For books you really, really, REALLY like. If you click this, the heart will appear on your read list under the picture of your book cover on your "Books I've Read" list.

The middle icon looks kind of like three trash cans to me. Not sure what the icon is really suppose to represent. This IS your WISH list...the books you want to read but don't have now. (Me, I use the wish list for any book that looks interesting, not necessarily ones I want to own, but read...because I check out books at the library, not just buy them.) Click on this if and the books gets added to your wish list.

The last icon looks kind of like a square (a representation of a book, maybe???). You can click this icon for books you own.

Underneath all this is some wording which you click if you want to remove a book from your bookshelf...and that means ALL lists...the three read lists and the three icon lists. If you decide you want to list the book later, you will have to re-add it.

OK. On your homepage, you bookshelf shows the total of all the books you have posted, regardless of on what list they are on.

You can access your wish list, or anyone else's, by two ways.

The easiest for me is to just click the "Shelf" button. This automatically brings up your "Books I've Read" showing the book covers. On the sidebar, your or your friend's lists are broken down: "To Be Read", "Reading Now", "Read", "Favorites", "Wish", and "Own", with the number of books on each list. You click on the link to bring up a list you want, like the wish list. Also, any icons that you clicked will appear in the cornor of the bookcover pic. Another icon that may appear at the top of the bookcover looks like a note. That indicates that you or your friend has written a review for the book.

The other way to access the wish list, or any other subdivision list on the shelf is to hit the drop-down arrow by the "Shelf" on your homepage. This will show all of the lists plus the number of books on each list. You click on the list you want.

Another thing that I find helpful is, if I don't want to look at a bunch of bookcovers, there is the option on the bookshelf, and, I THINK, on the dropdown list, to just show the list more of a printed or Excel spreadsheet. The bookcovers are still shown, but very tiny on the side.

One list thing, from the bookshelf, you can change any information you want about the books on your own shelf. You just run your cursor over the rating stars and the "Edit" dropdown comes up. On the spreadsheet or text version, there are check boxes to change the infro.

I hope this helps. Sorry for the wordiness.

Love your descriptions of the little icons!

The three trash cans in the middle is supposed to be a gift box, wrapped in ribbon- apropos for our secret Santa gift giving.

The last icon is supposed to be a safe- kind of dumb but that's what it is.

      Hi, Ladyslott!

ROFL!!!! Gift boxes! Well, will wonders never cease! But, I did figure that I was wrong about the three trash cans representing the wish list. Really weird. Later, I wondered if the icon was supposed to be three old-fashioned coin rolls...I guess to mean that you are saving all of your change to buy a book.

I like your explanation bestl LOL!

Hi, Sweatpea, LibraryCin, of course, Tenia, and all.

Well...if you are a fairly fast reader, you can look for something you might to read on your Santa's wish list or "TBR" list, buy it, read it yourself in a few days, then send it. There you go. A slightly-used, lovingly-read book.

I did something like that in Christmas in July. My Santa and I had the same book on our wish list. But, then, I am a pretty fast reader when I put my mind to it.

      It might work for everybody.

I'm just concerned that I don't already own a lot of books (and what I do own is often stuff I'd like to keep, though not always), so I'm not sure I could find something that would fit someone's wish list, without going out and buying something. If I can, great, but would it be a problem if I sent a new book? I don't mind buying it, I just want to be sure that it's not a problem otherwise.

If I play, I am another one who doesn't actually have a "wish list", but someone can certainly feel free to use my "plan to read" list.

Hi there Tenia and everybody. So glad Santa is back, go ahead and count me in!
    Email sent.
If I may suggest from past Secret Santas, it would be great if the giftees updated their wish list by the sign-up deadline decided by Tenia (dec 1st). Likewise, gifters should probably wait until after that date to check out the wish lists and pick out a book to send....
Also be careful to send books from the wish list, not from the list of books owned or read - that kinda kills the excitement...
But most of all, have fun!!!!!!!!

I don't really purchase books for myself, I use the library A LOT! My wish list is mostly non-fiction and its not real - I have a huge TBR and anything I would get from that would be great. When I'm finished with it I share with friends and family I have at home and then give to the library bookstore. I wouldn't want to move all my books from TBR to Wishlist. The items on my WL are just too expensive because they are non-fiction/reference books.

I don't mind gently read books at all and that's what I usually get to send in these games. I hope that works for folks. ;-)

    Hi!

I noticed that some of my books on my wish list are listed multiple times. (Sometimes, I click the wish icon when on the webpage that lists the books, then go to a book's page to read the synopsis and reviews, maybe click the wish icon...if I haven't done it on the list page...back up to the list page. The back page doesn't show that the book is on the wish list, so I click it again. Big mistake!) Now, my wish list (and sometimes, I have done the same thing for books I've read, or TBR, or Reading now...grr!)

Because now my lists show the book several times!

Does anyone know how to remove the extra copies without removing ALL the copies?

Just use the drop-down next to the green "edit" button and unclick WishList. That will take it off the wish list shelf. Keep the check mark on Reading, Read, or Plan to Read and it will stay there. Is that what you needed to know? These are all what they call "toggle" buttons - much like a light switch - turn on and turn off from the same spot.

OK, I would definitely like to do this and I will send info. Since I'm new to this, I was wondering how it worked but then someone mentioned our wish lists on here and I thought, "duh", what a great idea. I don't have many chosen but I can surely remedy that so this should be fun. Do they need to be HB or is PB also allowed. I rarely want to let go of my HB books but do have some that I was planning to sell on Ebay so hope I find a match.

EDA: I just finished reading the replies to some previous posts so I wanted to add that I would prefer the secret elves to pick something from my "To Be Read" list as that is where I put all my "wish" wants. I have so many HB's and no more space so I also use the library and now "Kindle" if I absolutely have to buy a new book. I used to be a fast reader but now Facebook and other activities have taken over so I don't finish as quick as I used to.

I get so upset with myself sometimes because I have so many good books to read and I find myself "wasting" time playing the apps which do absolutely nothing for my brain. I've also gotten involved with some DL games and online games in which I complete challenges so that takes even more time, and I still work FT. I need to retire!!! I have a very competitive nature so these games and app's, I guess, satisfy that part of me that can no longer compete on a physical level due to age and health.

Well, guys, I think my FB days may be over!! For about 6 months now, I've been playing (OFTEN) Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook. Two days ago, the game wouldn't load; everything around it came on, but not the game. Okay. Adobe 10 needed to download/upload, whatever, in order to continue. I tried varous ways to get that to happen, but no dice. Gave up. Tried again yesterday morning, again last night. Nothing. Gave up each time. I think (not sure) that I may have to turn off my anti-virus program but can't find how to do it. In the meantime, no Facebook (I don't like putting my comments out there for everyone to see. A few I know have "aired their dirty linen" as my mother used to call it - not my cup of tea. And you know what? I don't miss it much at all - all the more time to do other stuff I've always loved.

      Hi, all!

I am just the opposite on the HB vs PB issue. I have a lot of problems with my neck and shoulders, so it often hard for me to hold up a heavy HB...not that I turn them down! LOL! But, I do prefer PBs myself. They may not last as long, but they are far more user-friendly to me.

Um...if someone has a preference with the secret santa books, how do the elves know?

Marguerite, I don't know if you have a Kindle but they are lifesavers when it comes to toting heavy books. I got one and love it but I have so many HB's that I need to read that sometimes I have to suffer through (I could sure tell the difference when I was toting Pat Conroy's new book I got from the library versus my little Kindle in the tote bag I carry to work). PB's are much easier to handle but I find them not as comfortable for me to read from, smaller print and don't lay flat on my desk at work and my hand cramps when I hold them.

Barbara, I am so envious about your soon-to-be retirement. I just turned 63 so I always say each day at work is one more day closer to retirement. I plan to work past 65 but hopefully with reduced hrs. I need to put back as much as I can as my 1st job (19 yrs) did not have retirement benefits until a year or two before I left. Started one for myself in '87 but before that there just was not that much push back then to think about retirement savings.

I'd check Amazon or Alibris first....you might have a better chance of selling them if they are fist editions or difficult to find...you'll get a better price and the selling option does not expire as it does on eBay. Also, Amazon has a partial refund on the postage fees, which eBay does not.

I say this because I sell on eBay and Amazon, and Amazon seems to sell faster & gives me a better return. Also" eBay pays into paypal, which you can't transfer into your bank account...Amazon allows you to accept payment via Amazon gift certificates, $$$ on your Amazon account to just plain cash into your bank account. So many more payment options.

Hi, Barbara and Sharon and all.

      Thanks for the suggestions.

My husband does not read very well, so I get audio books when I can find them on the interned used book trade club (or whatever you call it) or from the library. I enjoy listening to them with him, even if I have read or plan to read the printed book. Sometimes hearing the audio readers give a whole new, exciting life to a story. Right now, we are listening to "The Shack". Great reader.

But, I usually don't get audio new because it is just TOO expensive, especially for unabridged (often starting around $50 and sometimes pricing MUCH higher.). (I prefer unabridged for the most part, unless I really want an audion book and unabridged is just not available, because I have heard too many abridged versions of audio books that just had the heart, soul, the best humor, character/scene/plot progression/thoughts/insights/imagry cut...or should I say, more like limb amputation!!!) Of course, if I have never read the printed book, I am not likely to catch the ommissions. But, if I have....I get something like phantom pain.

As for Kindle...sounds like a great device. But, right now, it is out of my price range.

      Oh, well.

Sharon, we are nearly the same age - I'll be 63 in Jan when I retire. I'm in the group that has to work to 67 for full SS but I just can't go that route. I wouldn't mind working a P/T job but the one I have now, even though I love the work, is just too stressful, too many responsibilities. I need to shed some of those. :-) I wouldn't mind working in a library as a page though; that way I can still be in the "book" business.

I know what you mean Marie - I definitely have had lots of people tell me that. I do have lots of interests too and I think that is important. Some folks who retire without outside interests just seem to fade. That won't happen to me! I have a huge list of things I want to do.

I have a question. Would it be fair to use people's "Planning to Read" list, in addition to the "Wish List" to choose from? I'm just thinking if there isn't anything that fits from the wish list, that gives a few more to choose from.

Some of us have said specifically that we don't use our wish list, so to please use our Plan to Read list.

But, are there some people who put books they already own on their Plan to Read list? hmmm...

    Thanks for comments!

TBR for me - the Wish list is very small and insignificant. Last time someone noticed that I had read quite a few Fannie Flagg and liked or "hearted" them and she sent me the best book! So browsing my favorites (or anyone's for that matter) is a great idea too.

I spent a lot of time yesterday removing books from my TBR list that I own because I was worried it would be just my luck I would receive a book I already owned even though I had not read it. I pretty much put books I would really like to get on my wish list. The TBR list, I decided, would be a great place to put those books I don't own or might discover on other's lists that merit a second glance. Of course, I will most likely be dead and gone before I get to all the wonderful books I would like to read. The list just keeps growing.

Taking care of a loved one can be extremely rough on the caregiver so please try to take a few minutes for yourself Paula. I'm sure it's hard to focus for very long on a good book as I find myself unable to concentrate when I'm under stress or worrying about something or someone. My parents are both elderly and their health is starting to fail but will not consider moving closer to me so I can help them so I'm just beginning that period of worry, myself. I didn't get any person info, are you still sending?

Also, whoever has my name, my wishlist would be my preference. my TBR are books that I actually own so please don't use that list.

    Thanks!

      Hi Tenia,
I have my book ready to be sent out. Should we include a note saying who it is from? This is my first Secret Santa so I am not sure what to do.

Yes, so that way they can know who to thank. Also, for those who have a specialized name they use for this site, be sure to include that along with your real name.

Tenia, there are several areas in my life (mainly volunteering) where I ask myself the same thing, so I understand. I've been secretary for the association in the park where I spend my winters, and it's been maybe six, seven years! I think I've survived five presidents - and like many positions, there very seldom is anyone wanting to take over unless the spot is empty and NEEDS to be filled. I could go on forever, I guess - 'nuff sed. But thanks for what you do for the Secret Santa thing.

Okay, by the 5th or 6th it is for sending out the books. The person I'll be sending to has totally different taste in reading than I do, so I'll be going to my Used Bookstore tomorrow. They're not open until Tuesday. But the Wish List was truly helpful and I have lots to choose from. Thanks, Tenia.

Hi, Tenia. I did I read that others have already received their Secret Santa? If so, I did not see mine. But, I have been having to do a lot of mass deletes in my email due to time constraints. I try to check my email headings and senders before I delete, but I may have missed it. I was not expecting it until after the first of December.

If you have sent it to me, I am sorry I missed it. Please send it again with my apologies.

    Dear Secret Santa,
I've been a really naughty girl! I went to the bookstore to get the book for my secret giftee and the evil little elf on my left shoulder forced me to buy two of the books from my wish list....
Dearest Secret Santa will you please be a love and check my wish list again before sending me a book?
Thank you and sorry, I promise I'll be good from now on!

I went to the used bookstore myself and they didn't have the book I was looking for but ended up getting two for myself. I am now writing down more than one and will try again tonight. No more for me, however (lol).

Sharon, the same thing almost happened to me! At the used bookstore I looked and looked - my person doesn't read the same type books as I do, so I couldn't even guess, and I had a list of about 20 thinking that was plenty. But just as I'd picked up one for myself (of course, that's a given, right?) the salesgirl found one on the list. Otherwise, there were plenty more to go home and add to the list - but then I'd have bought myself two books, and that's more than I was sending to my person. Not a fair way to deal, I think.

    Hi, everybody!

Well, this is a little sideways to the topic, but you will never guess what I found on my computer today.

Two of my books that have been on my paperbackswap.com wish list for...well...forever...one, a historical older kid's book, has been pining away for over a year (I think it is out of print, and I didn't have any realistic possibility of ever seeing it) and another, a mystery, that has been moldering around for almost as long...well, somebody posted the books and they are mine, mine, mine!...when I get them in the mail, of course.

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

What this means is that my wish list on Shelfari has changed a bit. I put the two books off my wish list here and on my TBR list.

I am still waiting for a book that I wanted to get for my sister-in-law for Christmas. This one is DEFINATELY out of print! Not even Amazon has used copies, but I signed up for an email if a copy comes available. Meanwhile, it is keeping company on both Shelfari and Paperbackswap wish lists with the rest of my orphan (hard-to-finds and/or out-of-prints) books .

Oh, well! ROFL!!!!! You can't have it all. ;-D
