    Group reads for the summer...

Tenia and I talked about not having particular books chosen for the months of May through August. Since summer is usually a busy time for people with vacations and kids out of school we thought it would be less restrictive if the members chose their own books and posted reviews. The only catch is that the books must be tagged beach reads. Once you have read a book just start a new discussion with a review of the book.

Please let us know what you think of this option for the monthly reads.

Since the shelf upgrade searching specific tags isn't as easy as it used to be. To find books tagged beach reads type this in your browser search bar:

    http://www.shelfari.com/books/tags/beach reads

There are even more books under the tag beach read, with no "s"

317 books came up, but I've read quite a few books that would qualify for this tag, and I'm going to tag them as such later today.

    I like this idea!

What are the requirements for a "beach read"? I've never quite understood, since I'll read anything anywhere.

My opinion of a beach read is something light (no heaving thinking required), fun and if I get interrupted I can easily pick up where I left off and not be lost. It can be romance, mystery, action, chick lit, almost anything fits.

Anyone else have a definition for beach read?

That's what I would call it, and for me, it's something that's does not require alot of thought or scare the begebies out of me. Silence of the Lambs, The Davinci Code, Iris Johansen, Michael Crichton, and some James Patterson books are tagged Beach Read but to me, that's JUST not the kind of book I want to curl up with on a beach. LOL.

There isn't really any requirements. If you look up the tag beach reads you'll see books that are tagged for it. Some I wouldn't consider beach reads myself but since it's tagged so, it will work:)

That's a great idea! Is it only a book that is tagged a beach read on Shelfari? I'm asking this because many times bookstores will have a special table with books with a sign on it saying "Beach Reads" or books with stickers on them that say that, too.

This is for fun so as long as its tagged beach read or beach reads - even if you are the one tagging it as such - the book fits!

I think it is a good idea because so many people even who don't go on vacation do so much during the warmer months. Me on the other hand will probably read whatever as usual. I will see what is tagged beach read(S). :)

i AM SORRY TO ADMIT THAT i HATE THE BEACH (I get sun poisoning without fail no matter how much sun block I use) but I love to read so BEACH READS are okay in my book. I do plan to spend time with my grandkids in their pool this summer, I just have to limit my time in the sun but I can sit on the deck under and umbrella and read!

I would recommend "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer. It is a charming book told entirely through letters. There were several lines I wanted to remember by the time I got to page 10. It takes place shortly after WWII, but it is not a war story but a people story.

Sounds like a great plan! I love beach reads and the beach too! We had an 80+ degree day yesterday which would have been great to spend at the beach. Unfortunately I was in the middle school gym watching my daughters' graduate from 8th grade! Which was nice too, it was a milestone. Although leave it to one of my kids to inject some excitement, right after the announcement of who won the presidential academic fitness awards (which they both did) Tori got a bloody nose! But after the ceremony I was able to spring them and we went out for lunch with my dad and my sister to Logan's (home of the best rolls in the world!).

Okay, I've wandered so far off topic! Anyway, great idea!

I have been passing this one (Potato Peel Pie) up every time I am in Barnes & Noble, but I finally broke down and picked it up, I have added it to my to be read pile. The big problem right now is to no let too much dust collect before I get to it. I am reading a mystery by a fellow officer from my son's squad, 'FATHER'S DAY BY KIETH GILMAN' he writes very well and I find his story a good page turner, it is not a long book, if some one likes mysteries it will only take a day or two. I am not a mystery person and I finished it in a weekend ( even took time out to spend with my grandchildren and the rest of the family, of course) two of my grandchildren "graduated" from pre-school on Friday and my son celebrated his 37th birthday also, so they hosted a big family cookout on Friday to celebrate everything. Have received several new reads and will have to check them against the "beach read" tags and choose one, it has finally gotten warm enough for shorts and sandals, the beach can't be too far away!! So I had better get my buns moving and pick one soon!!

I haven't read that one yet, but I have recently read "Bitter is the New Black" and "Bright Lights, Big Ass", both of which I enjoyed tremendously. They're very witty and would be perfect beach reads as would "Such a Pretty Fat" I'm sure.

Tenia, I agree with you. I've only read 2 James Patterson books, but I would not consider them beach reads. I hope nobody takes this the wrong way, but I prefer to go by what bookstores think of as "Beach Reads" since they may get pushed as such through different publishers. Most bookstores have a "Beach Reads" section beginning in late spring. Amazon.com may have some suggestions, too.
