Reading and Discussing Hojoki
I've added Chomei's Hojoki to the group's shelf. This particular edition is sparse and artful, though hard-hitting none-the-less. I find this book does what Batchelor's "Buddhism without Beliefs" seeks to to convey, albeit wrapping the message in language I could study everyday, as a sutra, if you will. There's a perfectly dreadful translation of Hojoki available via Google Books - "A Japanese Thoreau of the Twelfth Century," in the 1905 edition of the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland (just search for the term 'hojoki" and limit your results to full text. Or, if you'd like to find the book in a library near you, just go to http://worldcat.org/oclc/35829008 to start your search.
I look forward any discussion on this remarkable piece of literature and important dharma talk by a 13th century Japanese hermit.
