A series of unfortunate choices

Okay, so what's your biggest, latest disappointment with a book that looked or sounded great, or with a book suggested by someone who you really really respect that turned out to be a dog, or maybe just your favorite bad book of all time....?

My latest letdown was "Special Topics in Calamity Physics," which was way too clever in an...more »

    The Memory Keepers Daughter

If one more person tells me what a great book this is, I might have to hurt them! I have a son with Down syndrome and could not get past the fact that this bastard gave away his kid and didn't tell his wife.

THe characters were in no way sympathetic or likable. I could not help but judge them by today's standards. What kind of person gives away his kid and then doesn't tell his wife?

I wanted more info and closure and it just seemed to drag on without providing either of these things.

Anyone else find this book to be a stinker???

I agree totally...I barely finished the book and then I quickly gave it away so I wouldn't have to look at it anymore. After all the hype I had heard about it, I couldn't understand the fascination.

My aunt had Down Syndrome and I have an autistic grandson. Needless to say this book actually made me sick. BTW, the creature that gave the child away shouldn't be considered human, should it?

You people have got to 'walk a mile in their moccasins' because you are very quick to judge someone else's decisions...Have any of you ever thought that maybe he knew that his wife would not be able to handle this child? or maybe it would have eventually destroyed the marriage and the kid would be raised with one parent who was unable to cope? Grow up folks. I'll bet you criticize marriages when both decide not to have kids, too.
