Early Prize Winners
Started by atleast, Wednesday, May 30 2007. Last post Saturday, June 16 2007.

I've been reading Pulitzer Prize winner sfrom the early days of the award, trying to get a sense of what sort of books won in the teens and twenties. This has been interesting and challenging. Some of the books I've had to borrow through interlibrary loans. You'd think if a book won the Pulitzer it would automatically be on the shelf at the public library, but I think many of these books are forgotten now. I've read winners from 1918-1925, most recently finishing "The Able McLaughlins" by Margaret Wilson. I really loved this book. It was a very detailed study of human nature. Has anyone else read it?

Also recently finished "A Bell for Adano" by John Hersey (1945). Another wonderful read.

Loved "The Able McLaughlins"......I had to order it from Amazon, however. I totally agree, it wins the PUlitzer=automatic ticket into all of the public libraries in the country. With all the crap our government spends money on, you think that maybe they would pay for this, which is worthwhile and educational? Time to write my congresswoman!!! ;-)
