...A Wild Iris: Poetry

"To live in this world you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and when the time comes to let it go, to let it go" ~ Mary Oliver

    Resurgence?

Are you seeing a resurgence of interest in poetry where you live? Pittsburgh has more poetry series than I can keep track of...

For example, check out the poetry calendar: http://www.poetz.com/pittsburgh/
There are usually about 3 readings a week.

We have a lot of poetry events in Seattle.
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and go back there at least once a year. I will check out that website.
We have Sherman Alexie here in Seattle and he loves to speak and read: we are the lucky recipients of that.

I live in metro-Detroit. We have a thriving poetry community in the city core and surrounding areas. And maybe it is because I have always been interested in the arts, particularly literary arts that I have always felt the pulse of the poetry community. I live in an urban area peppered with institutions of higher education- a poetry reading or book signing is a treat we only have to take the time to check the paper on web for.

What is nice, is the creation of more workshops, retreats, contests and readings for students. I run a women's lit group for young women and poetry is huge for my members, and I know several poets who are involved with literary groups for young people. That is exciting and encouraging.

Perhaps poetry never "went away" but poets are no longer as solitary. I have several friends who write poetry, but they never thought of going to a reading. I think that is changing. I'm glad to see that more and more poets are participating in readings...and it may be a "confidence" thing...or it may be an appreciation for the spoken word.

I'm not sure why more poets are opting to read publicly, but I am very happy about it. Every chance I have, I attend.

I grew up in the San Diego area, Encinitas specifically, and I used to attend poetry slams back there. There were fairly big events, the old movie theatre they held them at would fill up and the poets that were chosen were narrowed down through three rounds by judges chosen from the audience and the winners would get some donated prizes from local businesses and a portion of the money that was collected in a pail passed around during the competition, which usually turned out to be pretty substantial. I heard some wonderful poetry there, hearing poems spoken by thier authors really adds a lot to them, I think.
