Books by African Authors or on Africa

There is a growing interest in the west to read stories about Africa, as told by indigenous authors or authors who understand Africa's rich historic past as well as its current challenges.
This is a group to promote books by African Authors as well as books on Africa.

  • francophone literature?

    Hi

I am new to this site and would love to know if anyone is also intersted in francophone lit. from Wet Africa or West Indies.
I am thinking of colonial times "Cesaire, Senghor, Fanon, Sembene..." and the more modern writers of the diaspora who may or not write about exile, immigration,... thinking of Conde, Diome, Mabankou.....

I am aonly asking because I created a francophone lit group and would love to see whether people might be interested.... Most of these writers are available in English of course!

    Hi Tapa,

I'm in the middle of reading Birago Diop's "Les Contes d'Amadou Coumba" at the moment--in French. I absolutely love them. I learned French originally in Nairobi--from a teacher who was from Zaire--but really mostly from a French girlfriend. Then later I lived for two years in Senegal. I've read a lot of Francophone African literature, both in French and in English translation. One of my favorite recent novels is Emmanuel Dongala's Johnny Chien Mechant.

Hi Tapa, Great idea to discuss francophone African literature as well. I am not so up-to-date as I would like but would love to find out more. During my last trip to Mali, I bought a couple of interesting book. I read the famous, probably classic Amadou Hampate Ba "Amkoullel, L'enfant Peul: Memoires" - fascinating.
