Books by African Authors or on Africa

There is a growing interest in the west to read stories about Africa, as told by indigenous authors or authors who understand Africa's rich historic past as well as its current challenges.
This is a group to promote books by African Authors as well as books on Africa.

    African Reading Challenge - Book 3 - Unbowed

    Hi -
    I have finished by third book and this time it was a book from my original list.

    Unbowed: A Memoir by Wangari Maathai (Kenya)
    Rating = 4.0/5

    Wangari Maathai was the first African woman and first environmentalist to win the Nobel Peace Prize has written a very moving and fast paces memoir.
    The book covers her life from her birth until she received the call in October 2004 that she was being awarded the Nobel Prize. She does a wonderful job of weaving Kenyan and world events into her story so you have the background information to fully understand her experience.
    As Ms. Maathai becomes active with preserving the Kenyan environment she points to us how tribalism, sexism, poverty and corruption are linked and you cannot solve one of the issues but looking at all of the issues.
    Ms. Waathai believed in thinking globally and acting local and I very much admired how she was able to relate to the local rural women (and men) and address their issues and be there for them and made contacts with international organizations that helped back others aware of her struggle.
    It is a very hopeful book and that is due to Ms. Maathai's outlook on life and her spirit.

    I read it some time ago last year. I agree with your assessment. I liked it a lot and have met people in Africa who aim at following her with work in their own country. Unfortunately, she lost her seat in the Kenyan Parliament in the recently held elections. Don't know why.
