Oftentimes children have the most incredible imaginations.... They come up with the craziest ideas, the creation and fear of monsters hiding in their closets, under their beds—dreadful monsters with multiple, blood-tinted eyes and jagged fangs, broken from their previous meals, monsters with sharp, curved claws that are perfect for grabbing kids, stuffing them into their horrendously enormous maws, and swallowing them whole. The mention of mythical creatures like fairies, elves, and ghosts, as well vampires, shadow people, werewolves, kemonomimi, mermaids, animal and element spirits, and shape-shifters by adults or teenagers only fed those wild imaginations, but oh, no, no, no—those imaginations are simply that. When those children grow old enough, those crazy ideas vanish. There are no such things as monsters, nor fairies and elves.
is the lie...perhaps there is some truth in the imagination of a little child. In my world, anyway, there is:
This is a world dark and quiet and quite nameless, where the skies are always midnight blue and littered with glittery diamond-like stars in their thousands. The moons, Shimai and Otōto, near to each other in their places in the skies, shine bright enough in their full phases to light the ever-dark hours enough to see by, while in their minimal phases thrust the land into pitch blackness; they are the celestial bodies which rule over this planet very much unlike Earth. Its terrain is similar: misty, rolling or jagged and snowy mountain ranges have thrust themselves up from the earth; noble woodlands of huge pine-needled, emerald-leafed, and white, frosted trees or sad, charred match-stick forests run sprawling; and rivers cut through the landscape like huge blue dragons, while waterfalls that glitter under the moons drop down though the countryside.
However, the life there is much different....
This world is built upon and inspired by the folklore of Earth, set in a time-period before modern conveniences. Here, the Japanese moon god, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, rules fairly passively with his three beautiful, divine sons: one of the sky, one of the water, and one of the wind. They live atop the highest mountain in their world and in the most magnificent palace, looking down upon the towns, cities, monasteries, forests, oceans, fields, and most importantly, the beings that inhabit their land. They are known as Youkai, a general term to describe supernatural creatures ranging from obake to demons to kemonomimi to creatures of European folklore, and with humans of all classes live together not-so-harmoniously under the twin moons. In a land laced with magic, drowned in darkness, alive with forbidden romances, and filled to the brim with the legends and folklore of the Earth we know, will you learn to cast away your fear of the dark? Or, will it swallow you whole?
Welcome to the land of dreams, nightmares, and darkness—and most certainly
