    Science Fiction or Fantasy

I hate to lump these two genres together but I do love reading them both. I like Nicola Griffith a lot and I loved Jim Grimsley's Kirith Kirin. Has anyone else read a really good LGBT Science Fiction or Fantasy book lately??

Nicola Griffith's Slow River is one of my favourite science fiction novels. Kelly Eskridge 's Solitaire is good as well.

In the Fantasy genre, I liked Lynn Flewelling's Bone Doll Twin/Hidden Warrior/Oracle Queen trilogy. It has some interesting gender bending in it.

This site gives some good suggestions on books that are available that have glbt characters or at least themes: http://www.glbtfantasy.com/

Ooh, great question. I'm getting such good recommendations here.

The only book I've read that might fit into this genre is The Female Man by Joanna Russ.

Joanna Russ is awesome and that's an incredible book and hard to find. Russ' Nebula winning short story "When It Changed" is also worth finding.

On good short fiction with some glbtq themes, James Tiptree Jr.'s (Alice Sheldon) short work is also worth finding because of her interesting take on sexual themes and sexuality. Her Smoke Rose Up Forever is an awesome short story collection.

Check out Mercedes Lackey's The Last Herald Mage Trilogy; the main character in this series is gay. The rest of her Valedmar books are sprinkled with queer characters; The Mage Winds trilogy and The Mage Storms trilogy come to mind.

How about some of the Darkover series, by Marian Zimmer Bradley. The novels about the renunciates, or Amazons focus on women who have taken a vow to not be beholden to any man. Many of them have same sex partners.

I second the Griffith suggestion with "Ammonite." Also, what about LeGuin's "The Left Hand of Darkness"? Not exactly gay or lesbian, but certainly queer.

Mmmm... ones on my shelf that I haven't read: Forrest's "Daughters of a Coral Dawn," Camarin Grae's "Stranded," or Nancy Tyler Glenn's "Clicking Stones."

    Pat Nelson Childs

    Hi Everybody!

My name is Pat Nelson Childs. I am a gay Fantasy author and have just joined Shelfari. Since you asked about Sci-Fi/Fantasy titles, I thought I'd indulge in a bit of shameless self-promotion by recommending my first novel, Orphan's Quest. It is the first book in my Chronicles of Firma trilogy and has gotten several excellent reviews so far. You can check some of them out on Amazon.com. My books all feature gay heroes, but the Chronicles of Firma is written with a broad audience in mind (basically anyone 13 and older), so there is no explicit sex in them. There is, however, a passionate romance between the two lead male characters. You can order OQ from Amazon or from any bookstore in either paperback or hardcover, and don't worry - book two, Scion's Blood, will be coming out November 30th, so you won't have long to wait for the next installment.

I look forward to reading some of the other books on your group's list. Though I have always been an avid Fantasy/Sci-Fi fan, I am always looking for new recommendations of any genre. I hope some of you will give Orphan's Quest a try and give me your feedback on it.

    Warmest Regards,
    Pat Nelson Childs

Thanks Pat. I would add Merry Shannon's work which is included in the group shelf. Also Karin Kallmaker writes good sci-fi and fantasy. And let me second Marion Zimmer Bradley's work as well. She also had some lesbian novels out but they are almost impossible to find anymore.

I also love LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness.

      More gay sf/f suggestions...

Ethan of Athos, by Lois McMaster Bujold
China Mountain Zhang, by Maureen F. McHugh
Mission Child, by Maureen F. McHugh
Stealing Some Time, by Mark Kendrick
      Cinatis, by Ronald L. Donaghe
      Wraeththu, by Storm Constantine
      Bond-Shattering, by William Maltese
      Sacrament, by Clive Barker
Echelon's End: PlanetFall, by E. Robert Dunn
The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood (That one just has a small lesbian role, but she’s important to the novel.)

All of my books have gay characters. My novel The Return of Innocence: A Fantasy Adventure includes gay and lesbian characters in supporting roles. I wrote that with contributions from lesbian author Toni Davis.

Degranon included g/l themes and supporting characters, but I rewrote it in 2004 as Degranon: A Science Fiction Adventure, making three of the main characters gay.

I JUST got done reading it for the second time, and I can't recommend highly enough "The God Eaters" by Jesse Hajicek.

    http://www.shelfari.com/books/1535264/The-God-Eaters

This is a fantasy, Alternate-Western, gay love story that still knocked me on my butt with it's brilliance. Look it up on Amazon for a list of reviews that will heartily second my recommendation. This is a self published book and is out there on the internet for free, but I gotta tell you it is worth paying for, just so we can show this author what a fantastic talent he is and what a great book it is!.

Godmother Night by Rachel Pollack is one of my favorite fantasy novels. As is Michael Bishop's Unicorn Mountain. Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series is also excellent.

I also loved Karin Lowachee's Warchild, Burndive and Cagebird.

Cagebird won a Gaylactic Spectrum award for best novel in 2006.

I'll second Matthew H's recommendation for The God Eaters.

I hate to add to the self promotery, but since Pat Nelson Childs did, I am a gay author who just joined, and my book Shine Like Thunder is a dark sf romance:

Alone in a remote garrison of his father's empire, Saahdia Ghassan sits alone in his sanctum, watching as the darkness draws nearer. Suddenly, the ground shakes. Invaders fill the sky. Ordered to find help they flee only to be struck down on a remote and desolate world. Now the ship is lost and their attention turns to survival. With demons haunting the dark forest and their malevolent leader hungering only for power, they must find a way to survive, all the while a terrible thirst grows within Saahdia.
