I need a class book for 7th grade boys

I am trying to help a teacher find a good class book for 7th grade boys. He wants it to be historical fiction and about the civil rights movement. He doesn't want The Watson's go to Burmingham. Has anyone read...
    The return of Gabriel
    This generation of Americans
    a Tugging String
or does anyone have another idea I could give him.
    Thanks

I have a great suggestion for you . It was just released this year The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon- set in Chicago 1968. 13yr Sam's father is a lawyer and famous civil rights leader. Sam older brother joins the Black Panther. Now Sam must decide which path is right for him. Its a great book and would be great for class discussion. I reviewed it on my blog and you can find info on my blog on my Shelfari home page.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret is my all time fav for so many reasons. Excellence of course, but it's such a great story for avid readers and not so avid. Boys would love it.

"Witness" by Karen Hesse is set a bit before the civil rights movement, in the 1920s. It does center around a small town's reaction to the Ku Klux Klan, though. It also points out that they (and others) discriminated against more than just "Blacks". The story is told by several narrators - from a 6-yr-old Jewish girl, to a young Black girl, to a young man considering joining the Klan. You also get the perspective of shopkeeper, law enforcement, and other townsfolk.... I'm not sure if it would be a good "boy" book in particular, but it can be good for allowing/encouraging students to consider different view points of controversial events.

Also, will you post when (and what) the teacher chooses?
    Thanks!

Witness is very good--lots of creative writing possibilities. Anything by the Colliers--Jump Ship to Freedom is about an escaped slave. How about Locomotion by Woodson? It's set during Vietnam.
