i'm reading deep and dark and dangerous to my own children (9 & 12). They love it and beg for another chapter. I can see why she's so popular with my students. Has anyone read Hahn's other books?

I haven't read the one you are reading yet, but I read "Wait Until Helen Comes" a looonng time ago and still remember it... I also read "All the Lovely Bad Ones" quite recently and it was good, too. "Look for Me by Moonlight" was kind of a flop, though (pretty stereotypical plot and little character development).
If you find you want more along the same line as the above, "Sweet Miss Honeywell's Revenge" by Kathryn Reiss was very good. It was longer than Hahn's books and might be a bit scarier (but all "issues" are resolved by the end, so the reader isn't left hanging or anything).

I work in a school media center, the Mary Downing Hahn books are popular. A reason they are so popular is that the mysteries are good. Hahn has a knack for letting the reader feel like they are right in the mix of the story. Hahn books that come to mind are: The Old Willis Place, The Wind Blows Backward, and Wait til Helen Comes. These are all good, good books.

If you are lucky they are some early Hahn books that are also worth the read.
