Your favorite Pratchett character?
Started by Shawn, Sunday, April 1 2007. Last post Monday, June 23 2008.

My favorite character from any Pratchett book is Death. Face it, he's awesome. Allow me to relate a snippet from Mort.

[...Great golden walls surrounded the world.
"It's beautiful," said Mort softly. "What is it?"
THE SUN IS UNDER THE DISC, said Death.
"Is it like this every night?"
EVERY NIGHT, said Death. NATURE'S LIKE THAT.
"Doesn't anyone know?"
ME. YOU. THE GODS. GOOD, IS IT?
"Gosh!"
Death leaned over the saddle and looked down at the kingdoms of the world.
I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, he said, BUT I COULD MURDER A CURRY.]

Who might your favorite character be?

I'm right with you, Death is my favorite, though the Luggage is pretty high up there. I haven't read very many books yet, not even 10, so this might change. I doubt it though, Death is my first love.

I love most of Pratchett's wonderful characters, and therefore find that two characters tie for my favorite.
The first is Granny Weatherwax - I LOVE her "headology", which nevertheless, is generally based in magic anyway. I want to be Granny someday . . . :)
The second would have to be the Luggage. For a chest, it has an awful lot of personality built in. And any piece of luggage who can eat people trying to steal from it! Where can I buy one??? :)
Yeah, Death is awesome. So is the Librarian. The evolution of Captain Vimes is interesting, to say the least. And the Patrician . . . well, I can't say anything bad about him (at least if I want to wake up in the morning!). Pratchett has created such a vibrant host of characters, and more come along all the time. He is truly a gifted author.

How to choose?
- That supreme Headologist, Granny Weatherwax
- Endearing Cat-Lover, Death, who can't quite get the hang of Humanity
- Brilliantly intelligent Enlightened Despot, Vetinari
- Sensitive, cynical, loving, tormented Sam Vimes....
I suppose, if I absolutely have to choose, it's MSS Esmerelda Weatherwax - but it's a hard call!

I'm new to Pratchett, but boy, am I hooked! I'm only on my third book, Guard! first, then Maskerade, and currently Mort. I've lined up another four books and I'm hunting for more. I'm attempting to read them in chronological order, but our bookstore is just not that well-stocked. After just reading two and a half, I was blown away. I can't recall ever laughing so much or so hard. It's amusing, thoughtful, and every bit as good as all those blindingly glowing reviews. It's unfair and cruel that I've only just discovered this!!!!!

About the characters, I've only encountered three sets slightly more intimately, the guards, the witches, and Death. I'd be hard out to find even one character I don't like in those books. The skill, consideration and generosity with which they were drawn were just astounding. I'm in awe. I've read and loved Tolkien and Rowling for a long time now, and I must say that Pratchett compares very, very favorably. I could really feel a twinge of guilt induced by wavering allegiance?

Enough with digression. This is a discussion of favorite characters. So far, I think Sam Vines received the most detailed depiction, treated very kindly by Pratchett. Even brief references to him in the other books seemed to cast him in flattering lights, adding intelligence and integrity. All very subtly and lightly done, of course.

The witches, Granny & Nanny were very ingeniously used to illustrate sobering common sense and humor, danger and power. I loved it. The sketch of Agnes|Perdita is thoroughly original. Funny, sympathetic, without pulling any punches. Complex but distinctive, fantastical but so real.

Re: DEATH. Where does one start. Quotable. Wordplays. Double entendres. Great guy.

Tony Djohan - I know just how you feel! I've only discovered him in the last year, actually I found him here on Shelfari. Isn't it wonderful? I truly thought all the great series writers were dead, I'm thrilled to find one alive and writing. Think of all the great reads we have ahead of us! :)

Hi LeeLee. I'm on my fifth book now. After Mort, it's Equal Rites. Now I'm on Eric. I'd have like to read Sourcery or Wyrd Sisters first, but couldn't lay my hands of them.

I'm working through the Guard series, I've read the first three or four of the Rincewind series too. I find I appreciate them more if I read several other types of books in between. I intend to savour these.

Death, easily number one for me!

Others high up in the list are Esme Weatherwax, Sam Vimes, and Vetinari

Ridcully - he is just hysterically "spot on", as are all of the University's academics. A beautifully created set of characters (and the reason that I loved the TV version of the Hogfather, above all, was its depiction of these characters - roll on their filming of The Last Continent).

Sigh. I've just been looking up the Hogfather DVD and it's way out of my price range. I keep hoping Netflix will carry it, but they don't.

Yes, yes, you gotta love DEATH...

But my favorite is Granny Weatherwax, no doubt about it - especially when she does her headology stuff. She's awesome!

I'm halfway through Going Postal, and I'm afraid that my alltime 2.nd favorite (Sam Vimes) had got a contender in Moist von Lipwig. I hear he's back in the new book Making Money - looking forward to that.

And I really like the Amazing Maurice, but I'm a cat person, so I kinda have to.

Death and Lord V. Wish I could run my office the way Havelock manages Ankh-Morpork. I'll always have a soft spot for the Nac Mac Feegle, especially Rob. He's proof that the road to hell IS paved with good intentions.
