Christian Disciple-Making

Evangelism is a way of seeing the world through God's eyes. Arguably, the supreme business of the church is to carry out Christ’s great commission to preach the gospel and make disciples of every nation (see Matthew 28:18-20; Matthew 9:37-38; 1 Timothy 2:4). Many great books have been written on the subject.

What are the Standard Expectations of a Christian?

Suppose a person becomes a Christian, a disciple of Jesus. Then what? Islam has its five pillars that spell out what a Muslim must do to be considered in good standing. But what is expected of every normal Christian?

Our primary job here on earth is to love God and one other. We are also called to share the good news of the Gospel. Fortunately, we believe in grace rather than legalistic good works, so we don't require pillars to know we are in good standing with God. The only real requirement is that we accept Jesus Christ as our own personal Lord and Savior. It's so simple it's beautiful!

amyhagberg hit the nail right on the head. Fortunately, for those that have been predestined by God and who's names are written in the Lambs Book of Life, we are not bound by any rules, laws, or deeds that determine our salvation in Christ. Christ became the sacrifice for us. No longer do animals have to be sacrificed, no more do we have to attain holiness by doing good works, it is ONLY through a relationship with Jesus Christ that we will be saved.

It is through this relationship with Jesus Christ that the fruits of Spirit will begin to reveal itself through us. As Christians, our desire is to turn away from sin and strive for holiness and righteousness by keeping our eyes turned towards Jesus. We will then love others just as Christ loved us and want to help others and to share with them the Good News of Christ.

It is indeed a beautiful thing!

1 Corinthians 10:31 "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." There are several scriptures telling us to bear fruit; Matthew 3:8, several verses in chapters 7, 12, Paul talks about the fruit of the Spirit in Gal. chapter 5, in Matthew 28: 19-20 Jesus tells the disciples and us to go and make disciples of all nations and to teach them, and Jesus said the greatest commandment is, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself." Matthew 22: 37,39.

    Great point of thought.
I will just add to what everybody else has said here, and they have all spoken beautifully:

    Micah 6: 7,8
"Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come. Now everything is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the
ministry of reconciliation: that is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed the message of reconciliation to us. Therefore, we are
ambassadors for Christ; certain that God is appealing through us, we plead on Christ's behalf, 'Be reconciled to God.'" (2 Cor. 5:17-20, HCSB)

As member of the body of Christ, We are called to served others though we belong to one body we have different functions and unique in every way, GOD will entrust a ministry to us.If we are willing to do the work for GOD. Obedient to GOD is what matters to HIM. Obedience is better than sacrifice. If we always put HIM first, He will pour out a hundred fold in return.

Chesscoach, after our salvation is sure we certainly should desire to live a holy life. Not for salvation but because the Bible tells us to. One of the many scriptures is (Ephesians 2:10). " For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.) I think nearly all Christians believe in and sets certain standards to live their lives by. One persons level might not be the same as another but I'm sure they are all doing the best they can.

Might I suggest Nancy Ortberg's "Looking For God?" She covers the varied ideas of our expectations about the relationship we have through Christ.
It's all about maintaining that relationship, through grace as friends, and lowing that relationship to influence every area of our lives, presominatly ALL our relationships.

being kind to everyone, preaching the Word of God, and............. love everyone. do not hate, you know the 10 commandments? that's what we should follow, God wrote them himself, so if we believe in God and obey him, then we shoud follow his "rules" i know no one is perfect, but God is forgiving. it is written all over the Bible.

Love, love, love. Love your neighbor, and love your enemies (as you love yourself) this one act takes care of all the rest. If you can't, and I know it's hard (!) pray about it repeatedly, and practice, practice, practice. Never give up on this one, and always keep trying, even though you don't always do it right. When we do this, we also begin to see with God's eyes. We look beyond the physicalness of things, and begin to see with compassion and understanding, in ways that we were not able to before. God will only give you as much as you can bare. Too much of this, all at once, can break your heart! I have found that this also helps enormously with forgiveness. Being a Christian is not easy, but it is simple enough for even a child, and God's grace is overflowing. Every day is a new day to learn and grow.
