Christian Disciple-Making

Evangelism is a way of seeing the world through God's eyes. Arguably, the supreme business of the church is to carry out Christ’s great commission to preach the gospel and make disciples of every nation (see Matthew 28:18-20; Matthew 9:37-38; 1 Timothy 2:4). Many great books have been written on the subject.

  • What's your favorite book on Discipleship?

My all time favorite is "The Cost of Discipleship" by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Would love to hear what others have found meaningful.

I like "The Cost of Discipleship," although it is heavy-going for the average person.

"The Disciplined Life" by Richard Taylor is a short but challenging book with lots of specific advice. When all is said and done, however, I think the New Testament remains the greatest guide to discipleship because it never becomes dated.

As Wendell Broom once said, "The only problem with presenting your body as a living sacrifice is that the ornery thing keeps crawling off the altar." Most of us understand the concept of discipleship fairly well, but it is nevertheless difficult to implement owing to our human frailty.

I am about to embark upon a reading of "Desiring God" by John Piper as soon as I am finished with my current read. I have been told this book has changed lives. I anxiously await to begin reading it.

I'm a big fan of Dallas Willard. "The Divine Conspiracy" is paradigmatic book challenging us to become apprentices of Jesus.

I love the Design for Discipleship series. They're really great for choosing where you are in Christ now and then continuing to dig deep as you grow. http://navpress.com/store/search.aspx?q=dfd

Discipleship Journal's Best Small-Group Ideas. I think it's authored by several different people.

For discipling myself, my favorite is "The Life You've Always Wanted" by John Ortberg (sometimes referred to as "Dallas for Dummies").

For discipling others I like "The Disciple-Making Pastor" by Bill Hull.

For specifically discipling men try "No Man Left Behind", a relatively new book by Patrick Morley (author of "Man in the Mirror").

I like a combination of two books when discipling others. The Master Plan of Evangelism by Robert E. Coleman and Tally Ho The Fox by Herb Hodges. The Master Plan of Evangelism gives the nuts and bolts of how Christ discipled his men and Tally Ho shows the passion and the need for qualitative discipling in our lives. For to be a disciple one must be a discipler. The apostle Paul put it best to his own son in the faith when he told Timothy "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also." 2 Timothy 2:2. Doctor Luke, also discipled by Paul, researched and wrote an entire account of the life of Christ in order to bring one man to Christ. "My most excellant Theophilus became just Theophilus in his next account of the Acts of The Apostles. Of course I am refering to the Gospel according to Luke and the book of Acts, two books written for evangelism and discipleship of one but God turned them into much more than that.
