Christian Disciple-Making

Evangelism is a way of seeing the world through God's eyes. Arguably, the supreme business of the church is to carry out Christ’s great commission to preach the gospel and make disciples of every nation (see Matthew 28:18-20; Matthew 9:37-38; 1 Timothy 2:4). Many great books have been written on the subject.

What Do Muslims Think About Jesus?

Muslims respect and revere Jesus. They consider him one of the greatest of God's prophets and messengers to humankind. A Muslim never refers to him simply as "Jesus", but always adds the phrase "upon him be peace."

The Qur'an confirms his virgin birth, and a special surah of the Qur'an is entitled "Mary." The Qur'an describes the Annunciation as follows:

"'Behold (O Mary!)' The Angel said, 'God has chosen you, and purified you, and chosen you above the women of all nations. O Mary, God gives you good news of a word from Him, whose name shall be the Anointed (Masih or Messiah), Jesus son of Mary, honored in this world and in the hereafter, and one of those brought near to God. He shall speak to the people from his cradle and in maturity, and shall be of the righteous.

"She said: 'O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?' He said: 'Even so; God creates what He wills. When He decrees a thing, He says to it, "Be!" and it is.'" (Qur'an 3:42-7)

Jesus was born miraculously through the same power that had brought Adam into being without a father: "Truly the likeness of Jesus with God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust and then said to him, 'Be!' and he was." (Qur'an 3:59)

During his prophetic mission, Jesus performed many miracles. The Qur'an tells us that he said: "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I make for you out of clay, as it were, a figure of a bird, and breathe into it and it becomes a bird by God's leave. And I heal the blind, and the lepers, and I raise the dead by God's leave." (Qur'an 3:49)

Neither Muhammad nor Jesus came to change the basic doctrine of the belief in One God, brought by earlier prophets, but to confirm and renew it. In the Qur'an, Jesus is reported as saying that he came: "To attest the law which was before me. And to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden to you; I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear God and obey me." (Qur'an 3:50)

    The Prophet Muhammad said:
"Whoever believes that there is none worthy of worship but God, alone without partner, that Muhammad is His messenger, that Jesus is the servant and messenger of God, His word which He bestowed on Mary and a spirit proceeding from Him, and that Paradise and Hell are true, shall be received by God into Heaven." (A Hadith from the collections of al Bukhari)

May Allah give us goodness, easiness, and peaceful in this life and give us paradise in the hereafter. Ameen

From which translation of the Qur'ran are you quoting?

I'm not sure why it matters as the meaning is fairly similar between all English translations. The differences are nominal. The core meaning is the same.

I actually prefer the translation by Thomas Cleary.

There's a new translation out that's pretty good (and somewhat controversial) called The Sublime Qur'an.

It seems the numbering of the verses of the suras is different in my translation than it is in yours. Do you know why that would be? I have a little difficulty locating all the passages of the Qur'an you are quoting. I think some translations even put the suras in different order. Is that right?

You should have not difficulty locating the information there. It even has different translations.

    Hi ehbc,
Stop spamming all christian groups on this site. I have since enjoyed the rich and peaceful discussions on the christian groups but woke up this morning to your replica discussions with the same topics on all my favorite christian groups.

I think we all we appreciate it if you started your muslim group instead, with your seeming mission of converting christians to islam.

Leave us(christians) alone in peace. Dont you want peace yourself? You can find rest for your soul in Jesus. He promises you living water and you will never thirst again.

I am not a Muslim, nor am I scholar of Islamic theology. However, I know that Muslims believe Jesus to be a mere prophet, nothing more, nothing less.

As with all doctrines of Islam, this goes against what the Bible says about Jesus. That He is the only begotten Son of God (John 3:16). This makes him much more than a prophet, but He is indeed God!

Praise His holy name. Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!

Watchman, I agree. If Jesus were just a man we are all dead in our sins and going to hell. I don't understand why Muslims think they are complementing Jesus by saying that.

That is the fundamental view of Jesus in the Islamic tradition; that he was a good man, a prophet, but definitely not God.

Yes, muslims dismiss Jesus as a prophet, as do our jewish brothers & sisters, or worse, even dismissing Him as a false prophet! It is a real stumbling block for a multitude who are otherwise open to belief in God, and may otherwise receive salvation through faith. Jesus is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
    ~John 14:6

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
    ~John 8:12

"He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household."
    ~Acts 16:30-31

"For by GRACE you have been saved through FAITH; and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God; not as result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them." ~Ephesians 2:8-10

That is wrong. Muslims accept Jesus, peace be upon him, as a prophet and as a messenger of God. They know he is a Word of God and the Messiah, and is a sign of the Hour - They believe he was concieved by the Word of God, which is easy for Him. Muslims will testify to the truth of Jesus', peace be upon him, message and will confirm that he spoke the truth and not what others accused him of. Amen.

That is exactly what I said....muslims consider Jesus as only a prophet, but he is more than a prophet, or messenger of God. Jesus is God's only Son, who was born in the flesh to become a ransom for many. He died for our sins. If we believe in him and accept his atonement for our sins, we belong to Him and receive salvation. God's Peace, and Holy Spirit upon you.
