Cool, a 2 year old post back from the dead! Hi aprillee.
Of course Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey Maturin series as noted above is a must classic. In fact, next week we're doing a group read of book 2 Post Captain a few chapters at a time. O'Brian's attention to detail is amazing and really puts you in the scene.
I've been enjoying Dudley Pope's Rammage series - only a few books in, but it's been enjoyable so far. I like that Pope gets into Rammage's head and goes through the though processes involved in being an unsure and inexperienced captain. It gets a little monotonous, but it's kind of cool to see things from the captain's perspective and hear his thoughts.
I just read Dana's Two Years Before the Mast - a true life adventure classic of an ordinary dude working on a merchant vessel out of Boston round the horn to California in the 1830's. Interesting to compare and contrast between his accounts and those of the popular fiction novels. Being a Californian, I particularly liked the description of California before traffic.
