The Pern series dragons are awesome, of course, but Ancadaladar in Mercedes Lackey's Obsidian Trilogy and Ryath in Raymond Feist's Darkness At Sethanon are cool too.

When I played a lot of D&D I used to like the Red dragons. Tiamet was also a dragon of immense power and very cool. Mean though.

DRAGONS ARE AWESOME! i don't think i can choce just one but if i had to i would have to say Saphira from Eragon. I havn't come across many awesome dragons in books but, off the topic of books (sorry) i would say that the dragons in 'reign of fire' the movie are just FANTASTIC! thats what i call a dragon.

Yes, Ruth, but also Diana Wynne Jones' sad dragon in the Dark Lord - or is it the Year of the Griffin? And anticipate great things from McKinley's Dragonhaven which is staring at me from my shelves. Must get to it

I must be one of the rare fantasy fans who don't like dragon-based stories... I can tolerate them when they are just a detail or they don't dominate the story, for instance like in Robin Hobb's Assassin Trilogy or Liveship Traders Trilogy. But I'm easily bored of all-mighty-uber-powerful-talking dragons... Very easily...

Naomi Novic's Temeraire is my favorite at the moment-he's a nice change from the typical, all powerful, aloof, wisdom oozing dragons that you see so much.

Of course I have to give kudos to Smaug as well, Ruth from the Pern series, and Saphira.

The Black Gryphon from the Mercedes Lackey series. (for me gryphons and dragons are kinda the same....)
Otherwise, Lessa's dragon Ramoth - in honor of that being my intro to personable dragons.

Saphira was the first one that came to mind! I guess I haven't encountered that many dragons in my reading. I also used to LOVE the dragons in Tamora Pierce's Immortal series. Skysong was so adorable.

If you're asking about the dragon with my favorite personality, I'm not sure, but my favorite draconic concept is in Pern. I love how they're leathery instead of scaly, how huge they are, and the science behind the fire-breathing. I also love the fire-lizards, because I think it's a more original idea than the full-sized dragons.

Totally agree! Pern is really the only series I've consistently read with dragons. I loved Ruth and Ramoth but I think Mnementh (did I spell that right?) is the coolest! I love how protective he is of Lessa. Oh, this is making me want to read the books again! I love how much the Pernese dragons reflect their riders. Especially at the very beginning, how much Ramoth was just as rebellious as Lessa was and how they both kind of tamed down later in the series.

I love how this is the first time I've read a series that had a scientifical explanation of the dragons, not just they exist. And firelizards are just really cute! :D

I like the baby water dragon in "Dragon and Phoenix" by Joanne Bertin. He has just the right amount of mischief to complement the wisdom.

But if you want a fire breathing, carnivorous beast, Arzosah from "Days of Blood and Fire" by Katherine Kerr seems like the most "realistic" portrayal.
