    New Member Saying, Hey!

    Hello All,

Just joined Shelfari (and this group) today so I'm still trying to find my way around. Thanks to Jaya for directing me here. I'd heard of Shelfari and even browsed it but never jumped in until now.

A little bit about me: I'm Wendy Raven McNair, wife/mother/author, based in Atlanta. I'm most comfortable writing but I'm an artist as well. I have two novels out: ASLEEP and GIANT SLAYERS. My books deal with the African American experience in general and ASLEEP is told from the perspective of an African American teen girl who sports a natural.

Jaya, I noticed you started a thread last year about the NATIONAL BLACK ARTS FESTIVAL (NBAF). Well it's coming up again (July 29 - Aug 2). I plan on attending. All interested can get more info at nbaf.org

I don't know exactly how this works so please add me as a member/friend or send me an invitation so we can get connected. Please let me know if I'm doing this right.

    Regards,
    Wendy Raven McNair

    Hi Wende,

Sorry this reply is so late! Welcome, and yes, you got it right!

I live in Detroit, MI, and am just now returning to writing after years of having nothing to say. What inspires you to write?

    Hi Wende B,

Life inspires me to write. The trilogy I'm currently working on was inspired by my teen. She likes reading fantasy novels (Twilight, Harry Potter) but couldn't find one with lead characters who look like her. Hence, my novel, ASLEEP. Not only is the lead, an African American but she's also natural (as is my daughter). Adults enjoy the book and teens are crazy about it so I'm pleased with the response.

What inspires you to write, Wende B? BTW, cute kitty.

      Hi Wendy,

I have been working on a political campaign, and forgot briefly to have a life. Sorry for the late reply.

I don't remember what inspires me to write. I have so long been 'other', raising children, tending family, that I looked up, they were grown, and who is this middle-aged lady?

So I will write my way back to her, then when I find me, I'll know, and I'll let you know, too.

I just joined Shelfari and I'm still learning the ropes and adding books to my shelves. But I wanted to say stop by and say, "hello." Like Wendy R., I, too, am an author. My second novel, A NATURAL WOMAN, is scheduled for release in November of this year. Also, like Wendy, the protagonist in my novel sports a "natural" hair style. Guess there's a lot of that going around these days! (-: For more about me or to read excerpts from my work, visit my website: www.lorijohnsonbooks.com
