I enjoyed Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son). Great book! He also wrote 20th Century Ghosts, but I haven't had a chance to read that.

This guy does not write these kinds of books, but Ghosts by Ed McBain is one of the creepiest ghost stories I have ever read. Alos, Come Closer by Sara Gran.

Joe Hill is definitely the best I have come across in recent years. I also really liked Alexandra Sokoloff's The Harrowing. It's kind of short but it's a great twist on the classic ghost story - a one-sitting-read. I also like Doug Clegg's Harrow House books - Nightmare House is the prequel, and then Mischief (Mischief is the ghost story).

Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert was another really good one. It reminded me a bit of the movie Devil's Backbone.

If you are looking for a classic ghost story, you can choose to read Henry James 'Turn of the Screw' It is a multi-layered thriller.

Although not a novel: When Ghosts Speak, by Winkowski is the best story I've ever read about ghosts. I'll never attend a funeral again without thinking about her stories. And, Jaguar Woman by Lynn Andrews, anything written by her, again, non-fiction, but, who said ghosts aren't real?

My favorite ghost novel is The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. It was written in 1983 but definitely gives a nod back the the 1950/60s works of Daphne du Maurier.

I love this book and admire Susan Hill work collecting many of her novels. Another classic writer Dickens wrote a short ghost story called The Cutting, brilliant. Turn of the Screw is excellent

Ghost Story by Peter Straub if you haven't already read it. Dracula by Bram Stoker - I know it isn't a "ghost story" but it is certainly scary and well written. Heart Shaped Box is on my list to read and looks great.

YESSSSS! Marty C I agree with you about the first two don't know anything about the third.
In addition to TURN OF THE SCREW I would recommend the first complete novelized ghost story THE WOMAN IN WHITE by Wilkie Collins. So many of the books adn authors listed are scary.
