Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill was pretty scary. Also, I just re-read Skeleton Crew and Everything's Eventual by Stephen King and I felt that there were many scary short stories in those books. Different things scare different people. For me, things that have a ring of truth in every day life that suddenly go wrong in a story are the most scary. I think that is why Stephen King is so scary for me. I find that many of his stories could actually happen (eg, The Body, the movie "Stand by Me" was based on it). I should also say, much of SK's earlier writing was also very scary for me specifically, Salem's Lot and IT. I still can't stand clowns.
