    Does anyone have the Kindle?

Does anyone have a Kindle? If so, was it worth the price? I have been looking at them and the seem really cool to have the price of books from Amazon is really good, but I don't want to spend that much money if there are problems or it's really not worth the price. If anyone has one, please let me know.

    Thanks,

I'm considering getting one, also. I'm debating between the Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX. I've decided to go with the Kindle rather than any other kind of e-reader because Kindle uses cell phone towers to download to the Kindle, whereas others use computers - and we have dial-up!

I'd appreciate any comments about which Kindle - Kindle 2 vs DX - to get, as well as the comments Marsha requested!

    Thanks -
    Hope

I have a Kindle- the first one, and I love it. I like the K2 more though, but the differences are small enough that I don't think i need to upgrade yet.

The DX is much larger than the K2, and is fine if you want to look at magazines or textbooks with a lot of diagrams, but I don't think it's worth the extra cost if that is not your intended use. The Kindle fits nicely into my handbag, the DX wouldn't unless it were on the larger size.

I belong to the Kindle Owners group here at Shelfari, there is a lot of information there about what actual users have to say about the Kindle, you may want to take a look at what discussions we have had there. I will tell you that almost everyone I know who has one loves it and are pretty passionate about owning one.

I have the original Kindle. It's great for reading when traveling - much lighter than carrying multiple books.

Thanks for the responses! After doing more reading, I'm now leaning toward the Kindle 2.

Marsha - I was on the fence about getting one, until a former student brought hers in to show me. I fell in lust right away! If you can find a friend with one, have him or her show it to you. I also read some reviews, and very few report any problems.

I heard that Barnes & Nobles is releasing their own version of the Kindle that features the ability to lend books! Might consider looking into it before investing in a Kindle. :-/

They definitely are. Their nook is featured on the main page of their website if you're interested in searching it out ;)

I think the nook also is going to have the option to download books and media straight from the device instead of having to go on the computer...am i right?

I just pre-ordered a nook. I chose it over the Kindle because you can share books you've bought with friends. A cost savings. I also believe you can download books anywhere there is wi-fi. You don't need a computer. Also has a touch screen. Could be good or bad. Only thing I'm not sure of is if it will read out loud.

Ashley, that's right, yes. That's the same thing that I read, which is extremely convenient.

I think that if I were to choose one of these nifty devices, the nook is the one I'd choose. So far, from what I've browsed, it's got advantages that makes it very expedient.

Laurie, I'd love to know how well you enjoy using it once it's been delivered to you.

You do not need to go on the computer to download books to a Kindle, it has built in wireless.

i don't know. Call my old-fashioned but for me, though the Kindle does have its appeals and stuff, I prefer actually holding the real book in my hands and reading it.

Lately I too have been curious about the kindle, but I don't think it's for me. My tastes are somewhat eclectic and I have looked at a sampling of books I have or want to read and they are unavailable on the Kindle. Also, I buy most of my books used from Amazon affiliated merchants and they are cheaper than Kindle books. Another concern, I take books everywhere I go. I worry about how a Kindle would hold up or even worse yet get lost, as I have lost books in my day to day travels. And lastly, I like owning books. I like the way they look on my shelfs no matter how cluttered.

I have a Kindle. I have had it for about a month and a half now. The positives are there are a lot of free books or extremely cheap books out there for it if you know how to search. I have had very few problems with it. The screen is easy to read and it is easy to find stuff. I did have one issue with mine and the troubleshooting telphone help was extremely helpful and got it back working within a half hour.

I still read a lot of paperbooks through a book swap at work and the library but my Kindle has given me another way of getting books at a very low cost. It has been great for travel and reading while on a train. I was able to downsize the bag that i bring into the City when I need to travel because i can bring my Kindle instead of a paperback.

I bought the Kindle DX in August and love it! I considered the Kindle 2 due to the cost but knew that I preferred the larger screen for display of larger and more text. The larger size is not "too big," larger than a paperback but smaller than a textbook. The convenience of downloading and carrying several books in one lightweight unit is incredible. I have purchased and read several contemporary bestsellers, but also have downloaded several free public domain books.

The only negative aspect that I have experienced is the inability to lend a book to friends. I love the features such as an integrated dictionary and the ability to highlight text and make notes. Even in direct sunlight, the text is easy to read. The ability to change text size is convenient for times that I don't have my glasses with me.

Last, but not least, the "sample" function allows me to try out a portion of a book. This no obligation feature helps ensure that I really want a book prior to making a purchase. I recommend the leather "Kindle" case. It protects the Kindle and fits like a glove. I highly recommend the Kindle and have no regrets about my purchase!

Ive had a kindle for about 6 months. I like it a lot but books are my preference. I got the kindle for travel. It is wonderful to be able to download 5 books (that would have been too much for me to bring) and then if I don't like one, its no loss in terms of space and I can just move on to the next on my list. The case makes me feel like it's protected (you have to get it separate, its not part of the kindle.)
The downloading through cell phone technology is so cool- it just shows up (fast!!) with no computer!
I'd like to have kindle work with my library and/or to be able to share or pass on books that I enjoyed but am through with.
One minor annoyance is that it should be able have a backlight option so that you can read it at night with out a book- light or with out waking someone nearby who is sleeping.
The other bad thing is that not everything is on kindle format, so it's frustrating if you want something that isn't on a best seller list.
A nice thing is the changeable font which is good if you are of a certain age and don't want to wear glasses or the light is bad.
The size is good also, it fits into my purse and dosn't weigh much.

I am debating buying one. I am a veracious reader and have heard that it is hard on the eyes. True or was the lady at my local bookstore trying to just keep a customer?

I don't find it hard on the eyes at all. Most of the time I forget I am reading an e-book. It doesn't have a back light, but I can read with a backlight on my Iphone, and I actually find that harder on my eyes.

If you read a lot, and buy most of your books this will definitely save you money.

Reading on the Kindle is not hard on my eyes at all. I have sensitive eyes, too. You can see the screen perfectly well, even in bright sunlight.

I asked for a Kindle2 for Christmas and my dear hubby went on and ordered it last week! It is on its way, and I cannot wait!!!! I will use it when I travel, which is almost weekly. I plan to download the Bible so I don't have to think about whether I have room to pack it. I also want to read classics on it - because they are free, and I have really been wanting to delve back in to them. Right now I want to go through all Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. I don't think I will download best sellers. I am a library person - I don't even buy non-fiction in bookstores.

If I get one which Iam considering now too, I am going for the nook (barnes and noble's e-reader if you are in the US) I have been looking and not only does it use the cell phone connection, there are a ton of free books, and it is memory chip compatible, so you can have diff memory cards for different genera's the kindle (though the capacity is large) once you fill it up you have to start deleting, which is what I already hate about my iPod. plus I have heard that if the battery in the kindle needs replacing you have to send the whole unit in? the nook's is replacable by you.

There seems to be quite a delay in getting the Nook out right now, they don't have enough available, kind of what happened when the Kindle was released.

I have the Kindle 1, which has the SD card, I've never even used it. I don't mind deleting books from the Kindle that much, I can just reload them at any time, so that isn't a big deal to me. I'm pretty happy with my Kindle and I think that Amazon just has the best selection of books right now, but I'm sure as more people turn to e-readers that will change. Plenty of places on-line to get free books for whatever reader you have.

I have a K2 International version and a DX. The K2 holds 1500 books and the DX holds 3500 books so I don't really think I will have to worry about deleting books nor need an SD card. Also, you can delete a book from the Kindle but it will remain on your computer so you can add it later if you like or read it off the computer. The wireless internet transfer of books to the Kindle does not need a bluetooth or cell phone connection and only takes 60 seconds. There are many free downloads available. The battery life is very good and even better with the internet turned off but you are required to return the Kindle for battery repacement should that ever be necessary. Unless it is defective I don't think the battery would need to be returned. The Kindle re-charges through your computer or directly from the electrical socket. I'm sure, like the iPhone, there will be upgrades and new editions of the Kindle each year. Some upgrades are downloadable but new editions will require another purchase.
