Hello, I'm pretty new to Shelfari *and* reading - used to love it as a kid, but kinda stopped during college and uni, and never really got the habit back, until now (I'm 25, so tooo long! haha). I'm from Manchester, UK, but live in Japan at the moment. I want to read as many classics as I can, but first I'm trying to read through the pile of books that have been collected over the years by the various ex-tenants of my flat, and then give them away on bookmooch.com. There are quite a few and I only have till August to do it, so it's a nice little challenge for me :D

What is it exactly that an administrator does on these forums?

Typically the admin is supposed to keep the group going. For smaller groups, this includes coming up with or elaborating on topics to keep discussions flowing. Perhaps inviting new members to grow the group. Many have some sort of guidelines for the groups as to what is allowed and not allowed in discussions. Where there are rules, the admin will enforce them.

However, since this group is so lively on its own and is a free-for-all group, that's not really necessary here. My main goal for this group is to just clean it up a bit. There had gotten to be many old and stale discussions that could be deleted. Lots of spam discussions (promotions for books or groups or services) which were deleted or moved to the Shameless Self Promotion thread.

If you have any ideas for further improvements for the group, I'm all ears. :)

Hi, if you are looking for new books for your discussion group - this looks interesting to me - mine is out only about 4 months and you can find it on FiledBy.com. It is called "Through the Eyes of a Gringa - Eight month in Peru and Ecuador" which gives an insight of life in Ecuador where I've been visiting since 1985, yearly since 2002 for extended periods of time. It is not just a travel book, but about life altogether there and reflections, comparisons and funny stories. Check it out and let me know what you think about it. Would love to hear from you and had many good comments from people who have read it so far.

HI, I'm Marguerite and I live in the lovely city of Attleboro MA, but I still consider myself a Boston girl where I spent the last 15 years. I love all kinds of books from Sci-Fi/Fantasy to political, to self help/inspirational to just plain good old fashion shmut :) What I love most about this group in particular is the passion for reading and the varied interests in the group. I'm forever reading about an author and or title that I would never have picked up, but someone spoke of with such passion I find myself adding it to my list. Case in point....I asked for suggestions on any really good King Arthur tales and I received many suggestions to try Mists of Avalon. I did and I loved it. This is just such a great group of people, they add value to my life each and every day.

Hi everyone, I'm Allie and I live in Cheshire in England. I'm a Mum to 2 boys aged 20 and 5 and a daughter of 7. Books and movies are both passions, love to paint, write letters, spend time outdoors, we've recently got into post-crossing and I could easily live on chocolate, popcorn and Ben & Jerry's if I didn't have children to feed! I work for myself so spare cash for books isn't always in abundance which is why I love book swapping sites!!!

Favourite genres are the classics, historical fiction, crime thriller and science fiction/fantasy but any recommendations for books/authors are always very welcome. I'm currently trying to work my way thru all the books on the 'Richard and Judy Book Club' lists since it begain in 2004!

Hi Allie, I thought chocolate, popcorn and Ben & Jerry's were three of the four food groups? No? Oh Well. One quick recommendation...Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. It's a murder mystery that takes place during King Henry II. Four children have been murdered and King Henry sends for a Master of the Art of Death (early forensic investigators). A woman is sent instead hence the title "Mistress". She has to hide who she is because King Henry's England would not trust a woman doctor. It was very interesting and page turning. Let me know if you end up reading it.

Hi Allie, For a historical fiction/crime thriller try The Bone Garden, by Tess Gerritsen! It's set in 19th century Boston (with some references to modern day Boston) and is about medical students, grave-robbing, and a serial killer. If you like that one, Tess Gerritsen also has a crime thriller series featuring Boston Homicide Detective, Jane Rizzoli - they also are very good reads!!

Let me know what you think... Enjoy!

I can't recall if I've introduced myself before but - for the record, I am Elaine, I live in Derbyshire, England, and like everyone else on here I love books. I will read just about anything, but am currently re-immersing myself in sci fi/fantasy, and have just discovered urban fantasy and am having a good time getting to grips with that.

I have two cats - who do not share my love of books, although one loves to hide in the bookshelves when visitors come.

Being a somewhat latecomer to the internet I am finding it hard to resist buying even more books, as now I can get them cheaper and delivered to my door. I'm not sure the house foundations can take much more.

My Name is Mindy. I have loved reading for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately only one(the youngest) of my three children(DS 22, DD 20 and DD 13) has caught the fever. My husband is a truck driver and isn't really a reader per se but he has recently gotten into listening to audio books. At least 1/4 of the books I read now are audio. I also have an e-reader on my phone. Ok I will come clean I have a mp3 player that currently has four books on it. I have an old palm that I still use that has one audio book on it and three ebooks. plus I have my black berry that has four audio and five ebooks. since I don't go anywhere without at least one of these ( usually have all of them) I always have something to read(listen). Plus I have a lot of physical books. It's an addiction I know but at least it's a good addiction.

I'm Kara, 24, my degree is in archaeology but I don't have work in my field :( I live in New West, BC, Canada, I love to read (imagine that!), and my favourite book is Frank Herbert's "Dune." A few other favourites are "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon, "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" by Hunter S. Thompson, and "Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk.

I'm a a sci-fi geek and I enjoy historical fiction, but I wouldn't limit myself to either genres -- there's just way too many great books out there. :D

Gabaldon did a wonderful job with Jamie! A few years ago I found (on her site) a group of ladies who had a "chat" with her, asked her questions about him: whether she "fell for him", too, etc. It was such a fun thing to read. She had (then) two teenagers (boy, girl) and her husband was into racecar driving. I'm sure someone asked her who the "model" for Jamie was but darn it, I've forgotten - and that's important to know: a man for many to use as a role model.

I got my 10 year old son into reading by 1. letting him know how much I love reading and how much enjoyment it brings me. That it's like an adventure. 2. I would always buy him books when I bought myself books. I would take him with me to my favorite book store Half Price Books so that he could see for himself all of the possibilities when choosing a book. 3. of course I encourage him and even invite him to sit with me and read or lay in bed with me before bedtime and read a few chapters. He loves reading now and just finished Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone:) 4. I bought him a way cool bookshelf for his bedroom and proceeded to fill it with books:) He loves that fact that he has his own little library and I am filled with joy every time I see him reading.

Hi Cindy, I don't have children, but my parents were huge readers. When I say huge we had books ever every room of the house. When I was little I didn't really like to read. Then one day, I found "the book". I was so caught up in the story I didn't put it down. I agree with Stephen what do they love to do when they are not reading? Play sports, try bringing to the library/book store and show them sports books. If they like video games, there are plenty of books about the creation of these games, the people who run the industries..etc. I loved animals, so that story that caught my eye was a story about a horse. Most important, lead by example and eventually they will get into it. I think for 13 year old boys who wants to read when you can bet getting dirty and sweaty and stuff. That my 4 cents :)

      Hey, Cindy

My daughter wasn't a reader either--so, I totally relate to your frustration--Until, that is, TWILIGHT entered the scene. Originally, if you'd ask me if I'd want my daughter reading about vampires, I'd say, "ABSOLUTELY NOT!" But, she devoured each 400+ page book and has gone back to reread the first of the series again. Thanks, Steph Meyers!!

The first book I read as a child that really pulled me in was THE SECRET GARDEN. I read it countless times--adored it--thought when my girls were old enough they'd share my infatuation. FAT chance. Oh well, if it takes a gorgeous vampire to suck them into reading, so be it.

What was your "first"--that one book that took you from your everyday life into another world?

Hi Cindy - I'm a school library media specialist working in a middle school, so I know getting 13-year-old boys to read can be a challenge.

My "never-fail" books - the Bone series by Jeff Smith - these have been favorites with a lot of "my kids." Also, there is a series of books put out by Orca that are considered hi-lo - very high interest - lower reading level. My middle schoolers love these, too.

Personally, my daughter reads as much as I do. My son isn't much of a reader. He did find the Joseph Delaney "Last Apprentice" series, though, and has somewhat voluntarily read them.

I assume that you get these books for them to read. Maybe find out what subjects they are really interested in and then read those books to them. But maybe you already do that. My 3 girls love to read and we used to read to them a lot. We still do periodically.

If they are into sports pick a an autobiography about their sports hero, and if they're into sci-fi find out what they like the most about sci-fi. Some kids like to read about animals or vampires. Like Stephen find out what subjects and then pick a book based on that. It will appeal to their interests and maybe even make them more interested in those subjects. If that doesn't work or if you have already tried it then I really don't know what to tell yas.

Could be that it's a rebellion thing, even if you don't realize it. Use that "negative" approach and say nothing, just leave out a couple of easy books in their interest field (sports, computer games, whatever). Even seem like you're reading one, and say nothing about it until they ask you, then say just a tiny bit about it. Maybe taking them along for just a jaunt to the library, leaving them on their own there for a short while with nothing to do but browse (with a little direction from you??), while you look for your books. Who knows? Some day one of those twins will tell you he's found a new interest, never knowing you lead him to it. And then, maybe I'm too old to suggest for this younger generation!! Good luck, though - it's such a wonderful pastime.

I'm Tea, a university student (studying political science) living in Montreal Quebec Canada. I love to read and collect books among other things of course. I am a "mum" to a 1.5yr old black cat named Salem...he doesn't live up to his name though as he is very skittish and doesn't like to be around strangers, he hides under the bed whenever we have visitors and I'm an insomniac...it's 2.31am over here and I am wide awake lol.

Hi Tea -- Welcome. So glad you could join us. You sound like me -- I'm a night owl. I usually don't get to bed until 2 or 3 in the morning. Of course, then I don't enjoy getting up for work. I must be part vampire, because I could stay up all night and sleep all day, but kids, grandkids and pets don't leave me with that option.

If you ever need suggestions for books to read, don't hesittate to ask -- we are full of ideas here!!

Hey, Tea -- That's what my husband did: night shift, for years. But then I'm the one who had to wake him for work, and it was just as tough most of the time. Maybe you'll find it's the answer for you.
Enjoying the night time, not wanting the day to end - I'm finally able to enjoy that since I retired and am an "older" woman (look at my age: 78) and can stay (usually) in bed in the AM until I want to get up. Many "nights" I'll still be reading at 4 and 5 am - but I'm up at 10 or 11. Is it good for health? Who cares???

Hi, I'm Anthony, just recently turned 27 (ugh), living in Baltimore, MD. I'm an LTL truck driver (ugh) but the pay is excellent so I'm able to support my book hording habit. My job is so mind numbing that I enjoy reading and discussing literature to keep my brain from dying. I have a wonderful gf and a dog, Pocono (she's a jug, a cross breed of a jack russell and a pug). Anyways, I'm new to Shelfari, but so far I'm enjoying it immensely.

My hubby is an over the road trucker (again after being semi home for five years). The pay is good and it does help with the bills (including books) He has just started recent (the last six months ) listening to books and this is huge because he is not a "reader" but he loves audio books. It's really nice because we listen to several of the same books and then discuss (finally after 24 years i can share with him my passion). Only thing is he listens a lot faster than I do because he has more time, usually at least ten hours at a time, and I do also read physical books. does your GF like to read?

Mainly interested in crime, thrillers, murder, suspense. I've read the classics in the past, but now tend to read for leisure - but I'm open to book recommendations to widen the genre.

      Hi Beng,

Have you tried Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin? It takes place in King Henry II. Four children are murdered and King Henry sends for a Master of the Art of Death, who was the original forensic doctors. Well they send a woman hence Mistress. It's all about the murders, but also she is in danger because 12 century England does not trust woman doctors so she has to hide who she is. It was really quite enjoyable.

      Welcome Jasmine K,

I can only share how I use this group and Shelfari in general. I love to add books to my book shelf, in fact it got me back into reading a lot again. I was in a slump, now I want to finish a book so I can add it and then see what other people thought of it.

This group I just read everyone's entry's and if I read something that moves me I will comment. There are not really any rules per se. Is it that you don't love to read because you have not found a lot of good books, or you just don't like sitting still for a period of time to read. The first problem is easy to find, let us know what type of books you like and we'll be happy to suggest others. If it's the whole sitting still, well there are not books on tape you can get and listen to.

Hopefully you will enjoy the discussions and that will get you excited about reading as it does me.

      Enjoy your time with us.

I can't remember when I joined Shelfari, but this will be my first time joining a group. I was just using Shelfari for my blog. I didn't know there were groups to join, so I'm really looking forward to this. I'm a married 29 yr. old stay at home mom of 2 girls (6 & 7). We have one cat named Jack.

When we moved out here to FL I had 20 boxes of books (they were a manageable size). There's just something special about the written word. Kind of like old friends. I would rather read a book rather than watch a movie any day. One of my favorite things to do is read the book before I see the movie adaptation. It's usually a let down when I see the movie, but some movies are a pleasant surprise.

Anyway, I've always loved to read (and I equally love to write), especially realistic fiction, romance, and anything humorous. I like to keep within the lines of reality, so I don't read a lot of fantasy/sci-fi but there are some I've really enjoyed (HP - of course, A Wrinkle in Time, Ender's Game to name a few).

I live in Alexandria, Va., and I've been working from home for about a year now and since I can pretty much make my own schedule, I have a little more time to read. I will read any type of fiction - not crazy about non-fiction books though. I like to "escape" with a good book. I look forward to suggestions from any of you.

It's factually heavy and almost feels like non-fiction but after watching some of Showtime's The Tudors, it's very entertaining. The two books I recommend are The Lady in the Tower and Katharine the Virgin Widow. If you can't read through them, the audio book is amazing!

Hullo everyone! I joined Shelfari a few days ago and I love it. I've always loved books and reading (and writing), I often prefer books to people, hehe. I'm especially fond of the classics but I also read the odd modern book every now and then. I'm interested in everything Victorian so I read quite a lot of books about living in that era. And I'm crazy about Norse Mythology.

I have a disturbingly huge pile of books on my desk as I don't have enough room on the shelves so it's rather refreshing to use digital shelves that are never 100% full! I think I like reading because it's a way to escape and live in another world, in another time. Come to think of it, I'd love to be a character in a novel because they come to life everytime somebody reads the book. :)

Hi my name is Jennifer and I'm a bookaholic. Books are my drug of choice. I work at a public library and still feel the need to buy books. I used to only read mystery, but now I will read anything that strikes my fancy. My wonderful husband (who doesn't read) built me 4 huge bookcases and they are bursting. I now have to resort to stacking them on the floor.
I have been on Shelfari for awhile and have only been updating my shelf so I figured it was time to get back to the community of Shelfari. I have been having a blast reading what everyone is reading and yes, have been adding plenty to my ever growing list of to be read books. Happy Reading.

Hi Jennifer - I am a bookaholic too and sometimes really have a problem with it!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to buy books and of course READ, READ, READ. The problem is that I buy them faster than I can read them. But that's ok - I was kind like you too, would stick with mystery. Even though that is still part of my "library" I really enjoy finding new authors and reading all kinds of fiction. My husband does not read either but is wonderful too and does not complain about my addiction. And yes, like you I have piles on the floor and can't wait to add to them. Just the thought of buying a new book or two makes me happy. I love to chat about books and authors and look on-line for new reads, read reviews, just everything about it! Happy Reading to you Jennifer!

Hi - you're 13 and a book lover! Great start to wonderful things, believe me. If you like romance books (and I'll bet someone in your life cares about what you read), try a Lavyrle Spencer book. She's from the midwest and writes super books with lots of romance, but with real life situations, real people. Try Family Blessings - (hope that's the title; I have them all but have a lousy memory!). If you don't like her, oh well - you tried.

She's a Midwesterner (from Minnesota, I believe) and has now retired but wrote maybe 22 books that are absolutely wonderful, with real people, real love, real life situations, but romance to die for! Try Home Song (a school principal who finds he has a son he didn't know about) or Bygones (there are young kids in that one, too). If you like her, you'll find other books listed that are so great - I wish she hadn't retired. Best of luck, you lucky gal!

Hi, my name is Christy. I love to read as much as time allows. Working and being a mom means I only am able to read a couple of books a month. I enjoy historical fiction, biographies, european royalty, and the occasional easy read (reading the Twilight Series Currently). If anyone has suggestions for books I may like let me know.

Have you read 'The Other Boleyn Girl". As far as easy reading goes, give Emily Giffin's books a try. Start out with Something Borrowed and then Something Blue. I'm starting on Baby Proof tonight.

Hi, my name is Hedwig, though I usually go by the name of Gamiila on the interwebs. I trained as a classical archaeologist but work in a bank. I'm an avid traveller, but my home is in The Netherlands (and shared with 3 cats). A voracious reader, I will pick up any book, but will settle down most happily to read books on art and architecture, archaeology (of course), philosophy, theology, astronomy, history and palaeontology when I'm in a serious quest for knowledge, or philosophical novels, historical fiction, chick lit or the classics when I'm not. My favourite books include The Lord of the Rings, Brideshead Revisited, and Winnie-the-Pooh. And my RL friends give me the impression that I'm the only person in the world who does not like the work of Stephen King...

I am obsessed with reading and decided to catalog my library last night. I have 186 books lol, how crazy is that. Most of them unread so far, but I have a great shelf of keepers. Some of my favorite authors are Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, Tom Robbins, Ray Bradbury just to name a few. I am currently working on Interview With The Vampire. Hope to find some new friends who are just as in love with reading as I am.

Hi I'm Bridget i live in a pretty small town in Pennsylvania. I'm only 12, but my English teacher told us to come on here so we could talk about our groups and keep in touch over the summer. I LOVE reading books that I enjoy! I have 2 sisters, half sisters :(, and one VERY, VERY annoying brother who lives with my mom, my dad, and me. I also love making new friends and talking about books or anything else! My favorite author of all time is Stephanie Meyer!!!!!!!!! i just love Twilight! I'm only on page 231. I plan to finish it by the end of July! (I'm a slow reader...) After I finish reading that I have to read more books for my summer reading for school... (ugh!) Even though I'm only on page 231, I just adore the book! I hope we can become friends! Leave a message on my profile and I'll try to respond as soon as possible! Thanks!

"Only 12" - how wonderful! Look at my age: 78, and be glad you're just beginning, gal. LOL. What a very smart English teacher you've got - great idea she had. And that really annoying brother may eventually become your best friend, believe it or not. I was the oldest of six kids and "adopted" a kid to be my "brother" (my Dad wasn't happy with that, tho) because I wanted one so badly. It was the "introduce the kid sister to older boys" thing, of course. Hope you find lots to read and love here - there have to be groups for younger people, with loads of suggestions for great reading.

Although I'm wayyyyyyyyyyy older than 12, could I ask that you share your summer reading list? I'm what I've always referred to as a "late bloomer" -- never doing the things at the age I was supposed to. My newest kick the last few years is to require myself to read 5-10 high school required readings each year. So a fresh list from you would be great! And I'm a slow reader too, but the good thing about that is that I read slowly enough I never miss a thing -- nothing wrong with that. And what small town in PA? I was born and raised in Latrobe (40 east of Pittsburgh), but have lived in Florida for 25 years.

Now, after reading through all the above entries, I'll say that my name is (as written) Marie, I'm a widow for the past 15 years (he's getting more angelic as the years pass, but we had a good 44-year marriage) and have loved reading since I knew the written word. Our mother (I'm oldest of 6) took us to the city library with the baby (whichever) in the carriage and then the carriage was loaded with books when we left, and I guess she carried the baby?? I only cared about the books, then. When I joined Shelfari (Aug 2008) it was on one of my daughters' suggestions and it's become a big part of my life since. I spend hours on this site and reading the emails that come in from it. My shelf has so many books, but I know it's missing hundreds because I never kept too much track of what I read (except for twice in my life) - and in all these years, you know I've read thousands of books. Every so often I hear of one to add.
At this time of my life I have much time to spend doing what I like: reading, computer games, traveling, driving around for errands, family stuff. It's great and I'm a happy lady.

      Hi Marie,
I found this website from a magazine and truly enjoy it. Only started today and cannot seem to get enought of it right now. What kind of books are you interested in. I enjoy christian romance and most any other romance books I can get my hands on. Especially ones taking place in the 1800s. I am a stay at home mom who reads every chance I can without upsetting my family. My husband is also a big reader which I love. When we take a break from the kids for a weekend it is so that we can read with no interuptions. Real romantic huh. lol Anyway glad to have met you. Hope you have a wonderful summer.

Hi, - thanks for zeroing in on my posting! As you can see from my pic, I'm an older woman, now widowed (he's getting better the longer I'm alone. LOL. He'd get a kick out of that!) and love romances, especially with a bit of mystery in them. I've read a couple of Christian novels (Tuesday Morning and After Tuesday Morning come to mind, as well as the first of Beverly Lewis' series (I think it was The Parting) and really enjoyed them, but I mainly don't drift to those. Get a kick out of the seamier stuff now that it's unreachable!! I love historic stuff, too - avidly. The things I don't enjoy reading about are bloody things, sicko things, cruelty to others, some of the more fantasy stories. There are so many good and wonderful things to read that I don't find it necessary to bother with those.
You're so lucky to be a stay-at-home mother and that you and your husband can enjoy reading together; my husband and I did that once in a while, too.
And except for our weather here (rainy for most of the month!) my summer has been and hopes to be a great one - thanks. Family makes it that way.

hello hello to all the lovely book lovers! =D I'm evelyn, 20, college junior, majoring in 3D modeling/animation. Super fun! =] I've loved my books since a baby, i remember i was surrounded by them since then and I guess that's how i grew up to love books till today. I remember one time i checked out 25 books at one time from the library!! haha that was the limit if not i am sure i would have checked out more...don't even ask how I was able to carry 25 books xD actually my dad helped me. :) I know many say not to judge a book by it's cover, well i tend to do it anyways. The cover has to be interesting...but i mostly read anything though. Mystery, adventure, sci-fi and fantasy and all are cool.
Looking for more Shelfari reading friends ^_^ so please add me if you'll like! Thx! have a great reading day =^^=

What a marvelous major! When I watch the animated movies/television series I often remark on how clever were the people who made up the models. Especially Pixar - they are fascinating. I wish you all the luck in getting into the industry. Our youngest son would have been ideal for that - had all the imagination and talent, but wasted it and now (nearing 40) has no nest egg, paints houses when there's availability, - WASTE. Grrrr. Take advantage of what you have, girl! But the working world is getting tougher and tougher; the people being the drawbacks! Greed, the "me first" syndrome, etc. Boy, am I venting????! Sorry.
Your story of the 25 library books brings back a memory I've posted about on here a couple of times - when I was a child, our mother took us to the library every Saturday for the Story Hour. She'd start out with the youngest (I was the oldest of 6) in the carraige, then walking home that carraige carried all our borrowed books. I once did exactly what you did: took out the limit of books (think it was 24 then) and enjoyed every one!

      Hi Evelyn,

I also tend to judge a book by it's cover. If it's recommended I won't refuse to read it because of the cover, but when I'm browsing the cover will make me pick up to book to look at in the first place and then if the story sounds good, I'll try it. So far this system has not failed me.

I'm Jen; I live in Cohoes, NY, though I grew up in New Orleans. I'm 39 and I have two beautiful small daughters who like to read almost as much as I do. I love hardcore mysteries, police procedurals, and almost any kind of thoughtful fiction. And really really good potboilers like The Valley of the Dolls and the works of Judith Krantz.

I also read quirky memoirs, a little history, cookbooks and lots of stuff to do with crafts. I'm a librarian, I work full time, and I have my own small business on the side, so finding time to read is pretty challenging (did you know you can read while brushing your teeth? I'm not sure it's advisable but it is possible), but it's pretty necessary to my sanity. I like the variety of this group! Hope to find more good stuff to read.

I'm Kathy and travel and reading are some of my favorite things. I travel mostly on a motorcycle, it's almost a prerequisite since I'm from the Milwaukee area. These travels mean pack lightly! So I got a Kindle 2 in order to take along tons of novels in a tiny little space. I love that little device, it allows me to read more often because I can carry it everywhere.

I have three grown children ages 32, 28, and 26 who are all off on their own enjoying successful careers - thank goodness! It means I can worry less and enjoy my own time more.

I love mystery/romance novels, light comedies, poetry, and classics. I dislike science fiction and vampire books.

    Hi, My name is Jo,
I live and work in Greater Manchester, England. I enjoy reading so much but with being a busy Mum of an 8 year old daughter and a very lively 3 year old boy, I have to confess in the evenings I usually fall asleep after a page or two.
This is not good I know!!!, but I do try. I have been known to lock my self in the bathroom, or shed to read. I read in car parks, on park benches, at dentist and doctors appointments I even read whilst walking to the corner shop.
Luckily for them my children have caught the same bug!!

Hi Jo, welcome - I remember a time when my children were little and I couldn't find the time to read; all I can say is hang in there...it will get better! Mine are grown up now (more or less), so in theory I should have a bit more reading time - or I just make time. It's wonderful that you have passed on your love of books to your kids; my younger daughter (15) has just about overtaken me when it comes to reading, she's always been an avid reader and I can see the effects in her school work, in her outlolok on life...reading has given her a lot I think.

I'm sure I'll catch up with you soon!

Hello, Jo - You sure show signs of a devoted reader! Cheer up, life does get easier for reading. And if you take the opportunities - and you seem to make those - you'll get more books under your belt. Shelfari is such a great way to keep track of what you do manage to read. For years, I'd kept a journal of sorts, filled it and then started another (didn't finish that one). But this is so much better - there's the social thing, plus suggestions from other readers. Welcome to Wonderland for Readers!

      Well hello ZoeMarlena,

Welcome to our group. Have you read Dewey ReadmoreBooks, the small town library cat? It is quite a cute story about a cat who adopts a library. As for apocalyptic stories, I just finished Stephen King's The Stand, and it was one of the best books I have ever read. Even weeks later, I can't stop thinking about the characters and how different the world would be if 90% of the human population went away. Enjoy your time with our group.

Thanks! No I haven't read those books, but the way it they sound reminds me of a book I read once called Comet's Nine Lives, also about a cat who wanders around the town. And I have heard about the Stephen King book, but I haven't read it. I've been meaning to start reading some of his books lately.

a little about myself-i was an LD student when i was young- reading was my worse subject- i still have issue reading out loud but when you read to yourself you can always "put 2 and 2 together " to get the meaning of the words that i dont understand- my vocab is not the biggest. i am also a bad speller so -if you notice-sorry.
Anyways- got into reading from all of my english classes i had to take (ended up having to take more then the rest of the kids in my class) and really enjoy fiction. i do miss the discussion i had about the books with teacher- breaking down the story, finding double meanings-seeing things in another light and such. my profile h as the books that i have read in the past couple of years.
alway up to finding new authors- so please feel free to tell me what u like.

Welcome, Sophia - you amaze me with your knowledge of yourself. I doubt I could analyze myself that much - and be so honest. The best of luck finding what you want out of this group - Shelfari is great. You'll find suggestions of books to read that will make your eyes pop! As for discussions, just look for one you'd like and step in - or start one on your own if you'd like. I've started a few and had fun seeing other people's answers/comments. Maybe in time you'll find that all of a sudden your spelling/vocabulary (which I don't think is all that bad considering what's out there!) have improved. If not, oh well - you've found a love of reading and that's definitely good.

I'll be looking for your postings!

I buy way too many books so I too can relate to those of you who resort to stacking them on the floor. I really need to find a good book swap. Are you aware of Paperback Swap (PBS), a part of Shelfari? It's a great way to trade books. Check out the site: www.PaperBackSwap.com -- it's great. You post books you want to trade, earn a point when someone wants a book and it's mailed to them (you pay the postage). Then, when you have credits (one book usually takes one credit, but the site has the rules) and a book you want becomes available (you'd make a Wish List), the person posting it will mail it to you (they pay the postage) and it only costs you the credit amount. I may not have explained it well, but it's great - I've used it for nearly a year and have traded quite a few books. And quite a few members on Shelfari use it, too. That's where I heard about it.

    fillibustero could sometimes smell Red

Hi. My name is Fill, 26, from the Philippines. I started reading novels when I was 17. All of them from my older sister's bookshelf, full of Sidney Sheldons and John Grishams, Windmills of the Gods and The Client were the first two books that I've read from the two authors respectively. At 19 I picked up a yellowing copy of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude which took almost 100 years to finish, it was difficult for me. Just recently, I started buying my own books and not relying what my sister would bring home. So I am now building my own little shelf, page by page, cover to cover and of course Shelfari helps me with the organization.

At the moment, out of the 73 books (in the English Language/Translation) that I've read, I own only 13,
    I disowned 1. LOL.
Shelfari made me aware that I am not reading enough.
So I have a lot of catching up to do. At least 7 more books before this year ends would be great.

I think I would next read the following:

    1. Seeing by Jose Saramago (I lurved Blindness)
    2. An Albert Camus (The Fall prolly)
    3. The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger's (before the movie adaptation gets shown here)
No ideas for the other 4 that would complete my 7.

    Anyway that's all for now.

Hi, my name is Elena (lol. no duh~!) I am very happy to join this group cause there seems to be some pretty cool and funny people. I'm 14 and live in Canada/ Ontario intrested in reading all different kinds of books but my most favourite genre of books are romance/comedy. The reason I joined is pretty much this is the most active group and at times I have no idea what books to read. So I thought this would be a great oppertunity to see who's reading what and get some feedbacks on the books :)

I love books and will read about anything from sci-fi, christian, horror, comedy and definetly investigative/detective (i got that from Nancy Drew when i was younger and also Tin Tin) .
My intent is to find out the latest books and read others discussions on wat they like, and hopefully place my own.
I'm here cos it's kinda fun knowing others have the same interests as you do, and an encouragement to read books, 4 both learning and essentially for the pure pleasure of it.

I'm a midwesterner in her twenties who has long been an active lover and reader of books. My main love is fantasy of all kinds (hence the handle I use) but I also read chick lit, classics, mysteries, random books, art and design books (because I am an artist see) and basically any well written book I can get my hands on. I already have a big list of books to read going but I love chatting about books so here I am.

      He Enana,

Since you 15 you should consider getting a part time job at Borders. You might have to be 16 to work the register, but shelving books is where you get to see all the good stuff that doesn't make the NY Times best seller list. I really enjoyed my time working part time at a bookstore.

I enjoyed the Sword of Truth Series, I got as far as Pillars of Creation and I'll finish the rest at some point. You might also check out Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time Series. It's up to eleven books and unfortunately Mr. Jordan passed away so the last three books are going to be written by another author, but the series is really good and I understand his wife is editing the last three like she did all the others, so I'm optimistic that the rest will be as good.

What a great suggestion for enana, Marguerite. I just yesterday asked the young man who helped me in Borders if he took his paycheck home in books (as I know I'd do if it were I). He said they let them borrow books for free! Great idea for that bookstore.

Well the really nice thing Marie, when I worked at the book store, in addition to the discounts we got. I was always one of those employees who worked over time when needed so every once in a while the manager would tell me to pick a book off the shelf and that was a gift for coming in or staying late etc. It didn't happen often, but boy did I love that perk!

Welcome, Tony - your first sentence reminds me of a part of the old Sesame Street (my kids used to watch it and I loved it) when the W was the "host". "Wanda the Witch, who lived west of Washington"! Please pardon me for the digression but it's a neat memory. Anyway, you and I have only one book in common, I see. Dean Koonz's Watchers, which may be the last one of his I read (my husband was alive then and I didn't mind so much reading scary books; not now). I'll probably not be able to recommend anything you'd like to read, although I've read some pretty good "men's" (ha!) titles here and there. You'll find a few men on here who may read things more your style. Steven King's books are great and loads of people love his stuff. If you're wanting to move along to something else, John Grisham, Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler - all good writers. Happy reading and again, welcome to one of the funnest places there is for a reader.

    • Hi Marie, thank you for the welcome! Once the Ws started, I figured I might as well let them roll. (At least I didn't throw in Walla Walla, Washington, the area of our state known for its onions;-) My reading is starting to take me in a variety of directions so I am glad that I came across Shelfari. I see that you have Kite Runner listed as a favorite. It sounds intriguing and is definitely popular so I think I'll add it to my plan to read list. I saw it at my library just before joining Shelfari and nearly brought it home, I pobably should have.

Yeah, I wondered where Walla Walla went. LOL. After you go back and pick up Kite Runner (you have to) there's one that focuses on two women in Afghanistan and shows a slightly different point of view: A Thousand Splendid Suns. I don't think it would be considered a woman's book; geesh! There's such an old way still prevalent in those "sand" countries. It may never change.

And today I'm going to Barnes & Noble (they sent me a coupon, but I don't need any more books!) to buy something, maybe Alan Alda's new one or Obama's Blackberry. Last night I sent for 4 books from Amazon. See? It's an addiction but one I'll gladly live with.

Okay, Nee - you say I must read those two books by Koontz. First, though, are they scary ones? Bloody? Sicko mind? Those are the types of books I can't/don't/won/t read anymore. But I just read a really good one by James Patterson (Suzanna's Diary for Nicholas) and had given up on him due to the gory tales he was writing in the past. Apparently, he's brought in some that aren't too bad.

Well..there is some scary in them: but mostly he is so good at weaving themes: and his bad guys are written with a veiled contempt running through the narrative that borders on the sarcastic. Like in The Face, the bad guy (Corky LaPuta) fancies himself as some kind of anarchist avenger: happily poisoning plants or handing kids drug laced candies while going about his evil plan to kidnap the world most famous actor’s son—hence, The Face.

But, I wouldn't want you to read things that upset you so, there is violence, but good does win out in the end.

See? That's my problem now - I'll pass on them. But thanks lots for thinking of suggesting something you read and loved; I appreciate the thought. Funny, wierd, I've read (but skipped over paragraphs/pages) war stories, am now reading The Book Thief and I just know there'll be horrible stuff, but I just don't want the Stephen King, Dean Koontz, etc. kinds anymore. If I think about it long enough, I'll rationalize my feelings, I'm sure.

Sounds good to me. Even better, in fact. If there's something that I do enjoy in a book, it's detailing. I do not at all appreciate a book where the author is vague either in character formation, or setting, or dialogue, or the mind-frame of its characters, or plot...or all of the above.

Oh god, I can't stand pointless dialogue.

“So, you heard that Ted and his brother—”
      “Yeah…Jim told me.”
      “Yep.”
A fly buzzes slowly back and forth in the middle of the room.
      “Anything on TV…?”
      “Nah.”
A dog barked somewhere down the street.
      “Got a beer…?”
“Nope. Drank um all last night.”
“Oh right, the fight was on.”
      “Yeah.”
The woman next door yells out the window for her son to stop lolly-gagging and mow the damn lawn already.
      “Who won?”
      “What…?”
      “The fight.”
      “Oh…the black guy.”
      “Thought so.”
“Yeah. I should bet on it.”
      “Yeah…shoulda.”
Suddenly the fly buzzing slowly in the middle of the room shot out the window just a head of the flaming meteorite that totally annihilated the house.

lol, well pointless dialogue, yes, definitely. There are just those moments when you read a book, where less dialogue is more. And then there are times when you're sitting there and think "This needs something that's not been added." I think it all depends on the book, on the style of writing.

Between having just finished my book THROUGH THE EYES OF A GRINGA - EIGHT WEEKS IN PERU AND ECUADOR, and trying to sell it and learning new things like blogging which is not exactly my thing, traveling and reading a Spanish newspaper daily here in Ecuador, I don't have much time for reading books right now but have read surely more than 1000 books in my life. I am very interested in learning about other cultures and people and have been most fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel quite a bit over the years, especially here in South America. My book talks about life in Ecuador mostly where I have spent 2 -3 months every summer for the past eight years with good friends of mine which enabled me to learn many things and have more of an insight into life in this part of the world. I want to share this insight with people in other countries to encourage them to also travel and see. Much of my travel lately has been by myself and per bus so as to see more of this continent and I have had absolutely no problem whatsoever as people are most helpful and friendly. So you need not fear travel in this part of the world. Right now I'm with a friend here in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and we are both planning to spend a few days in Quito, the capital of the country and go from there to Otavalo, an Indian community and wonderful market about one hour from Quito. So you see, I'm plenty busy. I have also promoted my book here in Ecuador and have been told by the Director of Commerce and Tourism that he finds the book "excellent" whicjh makes me very happy.
So perhaps you want to read it yourselves and then go and travel to see with your own eyes and broaden your horizon. If you read the book, please let me know what you think. I have had nothing but good comments from people so far. Thanks for reading this.

I've been posting in this group for awhile, but I figured I should jump in and introduce myself. I'm Chanelle, I'm 25 and I live in the Galveston area. I work at a public library and really enjoy my job! I love discussing books and movies with all of the patrons and recommending books and getting new book suggestions to add to my ever-growing TBR read pile. (I own over 900 books. It's an...addiction.) I also love interacting with the children at the library and watching them get excited about checking out books and READING! I have a BA in psychology with a minor in English which surprisingly (haha) I'm not really using. I plan on going back to school within the next year to get my master's in library science. I'm considering becoming a young adult librarian. (I change my mind everyday.) I love to read, watch movies, take pictures, go out with friends, have wine nights (with cheese!), and go to live music shows. My taste in books is eclectic- I'll read almost anything, but it has to be well written and if not, I'll toss it quickly aside. Oh, and I also have two amazing cats that are like my kids. I'm a bibliophile and an ailurophile, what can I say? :)

Haha...I can be a little long-winded:) I've wanted to work at a library since I was little- I've applied to so many different ones in different towns for different positions and finally caught a break one day! It is a dream job for me- surrounded by books all day! What more could a book-lover ask for? Don't give up on your dream job- it'll happen one day!

Hi to all! Areese here from the Philippines. I'm a mother of a seven year-old girl and a five-year-old boy. I spend most of my afternoons outside my children's school waiting for dismissal so I usually have that time to read my books. It's only after Twilight when I started reading again and somehow been introduced to the Young Adults genre. I'm loving it so far...it makes me feel young, too. Then, I came across groups like this and I'm enjoying all the ping-pong discussions going on. I'm learning a lot of new things, latest and good books to read in particular, and it's fun to "hear" the different views that each one shares. Glad to be part of this group. :-)

Robert A Heinlein wrote a number of books for teens all through the 40's and 50's which are still great reads and I'm sure you'd like um. Here are a few to look for...perhaps in your local Library.

      Podkayne of Mars.1963
The Rolling Stones aka Space Family Stone, 1952.
      Space Cadet, 1948
      Farmer in the Sky, 1950
      Starman Jones, 1953
      Rocket Ship Galileo, 1947
      Tunnel in the Sky, 1955
      Citizen of the Galaxy, 1957
      Have Space Suit—Will Travel, 1958
      The Star Beast, 1954

Welcome Areese and Clarisse! There seems to be quite a few people from the Phillipines here. It must be a country of readers. Is English widely spoken in the
Phillipines? I thought Tagalog and Spanish were spoken more there.

Tagalog is mostly spoken, yes, but we do have a lot of different Filipino dialects in different regions. Compared to other Asian countries, we speak English as our second language. The English subject is part of our school curriculum from preschool to college. It was, after all, the Americans (Thomasites) who introduced public schools here in our country.

Thanks Stephen! English is widely spoken in the Philippines especially in private schools but Tagalog is MOST widely spoken here. Spanish? Hmmm.. Not really, I think. Cause we don't know how to speak spanish in here. Actually, I can't even understand Spanish. :]

  • Areese P

    Areese P

Thanks much for the warm welcome! Clarisse is right, most Filipinos speak and understand English because it is the medium of instruction in our schools, especially in private schools. Tagalog is our national language but we also have different dialects since our country is an archipelago and different cities speak different dialects. Spanish used to be taught in College and was a part of our curriculum but now, the students are given options as to what foreign language they wish to take up. I guess I'm lucky to have learned Spanish during my college years...love the language a lot! But since I don't get to practice it, the only Spanish I have left are what I gather from Dora and Diego. :-)
And yes Stephen, we are a country of readers too. Our bookstores can attest to that. We are just not so lucky to have a public library equipped with all these books, especially the newly-released ones since most of our public libraries are not up-to-date with the supply of books. So it leaves us no other choice but to purchase books and they get to be quite expensive sometimes (especially when they're brand new). But of course, this doesn't stop us from reading. :-)

I'm presently not reading any books because I spent 3 months in Ecuador with friends and promoted my book - Through the Eyes of a Gringa - Eight weeks in Peru and Ecuador - by meeting with many people from book stores and the Director of Commerce and Tourism of the Province of Guayas where Guayaquil is located. He told me that my book was the only one of its kind in all of Ecuador, congratulated me, bought a copy and told me I would now forever be a part of the history of Ecuador. I thanked him but told him that this was not the reason I wrote the book. In fact my initial idea was to bring more news from South America to North America and show people here that people there face the same struggles. However, once down there it occurred to me that it should also be of interest to Ecuadorians because they should also know how foreigners see them and what stands out. The rector of one school wrote to all his faculty to review the book and see if they find it useful, which they did. Now I'm hoping that they'll soon order some. I was told that the book appears excellent to them and as soon as the money for it was approved they would order from Mr. Books, a big bookstore I also talked with and was told that they deal with Barnes & Noble and will order from them. I thought this was interesting.
Now I would love to hear from you after you have read my book what you think of it.

There were two times in my life that I kept a journal of books read; one went on for a couple of years, at least. Somewhere in this house (maybe in my Memory Box) I have them. They're the only record of books I've read. I recall I'd made a few columns, the Title/Author/a quick synopsis (this got tougher because there was only a small space!)/and some kind of rating. Wish I'd kept it up, but now there's Shelfari and that's so much better in every way. Plus the social aspect is wonderful.

But I find, as you do, Stephen, that every so often a book is mentioned that I've read. Who knows when? I guess, but that's about all I can do. Trouble is, that book looks like I've just read it.

I mostly read young adult fantasy and science fiction and romance books... for example: Twilight saga, City of Ashes, Blue Bloods series, and romance books like Rules of Passion and Before the Scandal, etc. Occasionally, however, something will tempt me to read a different genre- though I have a very difficult time getting into Historical Non-Fiction stuff. I probably read more than I should- I'm on my second book this week- considering that I'm in college... but I can't stop! :)

Hi Brigid here, and I a newbie. I don't get on this site too much because I am addicted to joining everything Harry Potter, and you can only do so much.. I am currently reading the tales of Beetle the Bard, trying to study THe Order of the Phoenix. I am on the third re read of it, now on Chapter 12. I am going to be reading Farenheit 451 with the Harry Potter Alliance. I think I read it many years ago and dont remember anything so it will be like a new read to me.

Greetings! Just like the name says, I am called Rebecca by most ;) I have been a bookworm all my life and joined Shelfari to try out the organizational and social aspects of this site. I really enjoy the groups here! With my recent acquisition of a Kindle 2, my reading has definitely skyrocketed. It's so much easier to read a few pages here and there all day, on top of the regular reading time I already had.

I decided to join this group so I could share with others reading the same things, and get suggestions for any other good reads out there. I'm excited to share in the book love with others!

I'm me and I love reading, exploring, and observing. I like to be on the outside looking in and taking pictures, making videos. Preserving memories, books, and music are my passions. I always have to have a book available to read, and if I don't have one, I'll read my textbooks. I do what I want when I want to do it. I listen to no one's instructions, and I wouldn't change that for the world. That's pretty much it.

Hi, I am Meredith and my passion from reading stemmed from wandering into a Borders when I was out of a job about 8 years ago and walking into the mystery section and picking up A IS FOR ALIBI by Sue Grafton and ONE FOR THE MONEY by Janet Evanovich, while Evanovich and Plum will forever be the reason I love to read, my tastes have definitely grown and changed. I swore I would never read romances, yes I was one of *those* people. Then I met the MacGregors by Nora Roberts and I was hooked ever since, then came my passion for all the things that go bump in the night and here I stand a well rounded reader who can never decide what to read next with a mountain of a TBR and a boyfriend who just shakes his head and reads my books too.
I live in Milwaukee WI, and I just found out that Shelfari has groups. Hope to get to know you all better soon. I am currently reading HEAT WAVE by Richard Castle

If you like characters and a lot of goofy ones at that, then you'll enjoy them. I don't read them because they are fabulous mysteries, I read them because I love the characters so much.

Hi, Meredith. I too am eventually intend to pick up an Evanovich book since I've had several people recommend the plum series. My husband also likes to tease me because of the piles of books that I keep near the bed (he eventually bought a bookshelf/head board to accommodate them). Anyway, welcome aboard.

Hi all, I'm Nardina and I'm a 29 year old accountant living in Townsville, Australia. I've been on shelfari a few months now, but am relatively new to this group. I'm a big reader who has loved reading since I was a child. It's one of my fave things to do in my spare time. My favourite authors are Kathy Reichs, Karin Slaughter, Michael Connelly, John Grisham and Dean Koontz but I read lots of other types of books also. I'm currently reading Darkly Dreaming Dexter as I love the tv and thought it would be great to check out the books also.

Hi All. Here's how I found out about shelfari: I get this email form my 12 year old niece saying her English teacher made everyone in the class
join this website. So, she knows I love to read and says I should check it out! I did and I fell in love with this site! It feeds my book addiction!
What I love about it is all the reviews from book lovers like myself. No publishers(well not many) pushing their books--but real people who have read the books. I love that fact! Thanks to my niece I have found so many like-minded people who love books--thanks Amanda!
    Love this site!
