World Lit short stories in English?
Started by jden, Friday, January 11 2008. Last post Saturday, July 12 2008.

What short stories in English (originally in English, not in translation unless by the author) would you recommend? I'm particularly looking for wonderful short stories which will also give students a bit of insight into a particular culture, geographical area, or variety of English (Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, any African countries, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, etc.; not USA or England as we have already dabbled in these.) Available online? So much the better (please give URL!)! Thanks in advance!

The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain comes to mind. He's an American literature icon. Definitely covers the cultural scene of his time. Not sure how young/old your students are but I am sure you can find something anyone would enjoy.

Love and longing in Bombay by Vikram Chandra - about India obviously.
Rohinton Mistry has written several short stories as well. He is Indian as well.
Naguib Mahfouz (Nobel Prize winner), Egyptian, has nice short story collections too.
Ben Okri has written short stories and C.Adichie too. They are African.

Carol Shields, The Collected Stories, is a good short story collection by an established Canadian novelist. She died a few years ago, much to our loss, but since her death I discovered these short stories. There is one available online, "Mirrors," copyright 1995, and winner of the o'henry awards I think. Enjoy.

I concur with your recommendations. In addition, there is a new book out "Canadian Short Stories" which is very substantial in its reach. May be too specific for the question posed but definitively worth looking into.

I would recommend "Interpreter of Maladies" by Jhumpa Lahiri. These are truly fantastic short stories, written originally in English by a woman of Indian descent. I believe it won either the Pulitzer of the Mann-Booker prize for literature - I can't remember which one. But I highly recommend her stories!

Hi, I am new to this group and interested in several discussions here. I would like to strongly recommend Nadine Gordimer. Her own story collection is worth a serious look. Even more interesting for your project is her Anthology of short stories "Telling Tales". You can see my review when you click on the book.

I think Lahiri and Gordimer are both terrific writers. For an anthology of African women writers, how about Opening Spaces: An Anthology of Contemporary African Women's Writing edited by Yvonne Vera, herself an African novelist? I found a nunmber of good stories in that one.
