Hmm, let's see - my hobby of choice is attending science ficiton conventions, and there is almost always an author guest of honor...

Lois McMasters Bujold (when she saw my stack of books at the signing, she said, "You buy me in hardcover. Bless you.")

Terry Prachett - as funny in person as he is on paper

    Jane Lindskold

    Jody Lynn Nye

    Nick Pollotta

    Peter Beagle

    Phyllis Eisenstein

    Tim Powers

I've seen more, but these are ones I actually spoke to

I've only met five and all at the same time. We had an author panel at our library, so I was able to meet all of them. I hope to meet more. :)

Working for the American Library Association's, I have met many. If you go to any conference (like ALA's Annual Conference or division conferences) you can meet a lot of authors. You can meet them at BEA, too! Or, obviously, book signings at your local (independent) bookstores. You can also see what authors are in yuor area and invite them to speak at your library!

The American Library Association is a professional organization for librarians. I work for the Young Adult Library Services Association. If you have ever seen a quote from Booklist on the back of a book...that is a publication of the ALA. We also give out literary awards for books. The Printz award is for literary excellence in young adult literature, Margaret Edwards is for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults. You also may have heard of the Newbery or Caldecott medals for children's books. All the work of the ALA.

You can go to www.ala.org to learn more, or, especially if you are not a librarian, go to www.ilovelibraries.org to learn more about us!

Assuming you aren't counting college professors who are published (either fiction or non-fiction) I have only met 1, Mitch Albom. He was very nice, and I love his work!

As I am also a member of a Library Association (though I have yet to attend ALA), I've met my share of authors. Attending Book Expo America was a great way to meet a slew of authors and get books signed.
I also attended a librarian/bookseller day at the Romance Writer's of America Conference many years ago and met a bunch of my favorites then.
In the last few years, I went from only having met one or two, to meeting more than I can name. It's a very cool thing.

As an author, I've had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know many other authors including bestsellers like Jodi Picoult, Tess Gerritsen, Joe Hill, Linda Greenlaw, etc.

Authors love meeting readers and librarians! We love e-mail, too. I've had the wonderful fortune to connect with lots of readers through on-line book clubs and spots like Shelfari.

    Great question.

Now why would say that authors love meeting librarians? Some librarians might be offended by the thought that you might be drawn to them initially because they are a librian. Not me of course, I love authors and libraians.

I can now add Alice McDermott and Laura Restrepo, both of whom I met yesterday. If you ever have a chance to meet them or hear them speak/read, I would highly recommend it.

I am very lucky to be part of the Lake County Library System in Central Florida. We have a Reading Festival every year for the past 5 years. It has grown tremendously each year so that we are lucky to attract well-published authors like Nancy Cohen, Sarah Stromeyer, Bob Morris (who is also a native son), Cheryl (C.L.) Wilson, Jo Dereske, Michael White, Katherine Hall Page, and many, many more. Just this year we had 11 authors visit just our local public library; there were even more appearing in the libraries throughout the County.

I guess I've met 17 in all, some bigger names than others. The names that you might recognize are Pat Conroy, Rick Bragg, Sena Jeter Naslund, Frank X. Walker, Bob Sloan, Crystal Wilkinson, Roberta Simpson Brown, Lynwood Montell, and George Ellla Lyon.

I've always said that when I retire, my hobby will be going around to all the bookstores to meet authors! The Chicago Printer's Row Book Fair is a great place to meet authors. Chris Bohjalian was wonderful last year. I also love going to ALA (though didn't make it to Anaheim this year). College classmate Patricia Wrede told my daughter that she looked like one of the characters in one of her books! I'd rather meet authors than actors any day :-) [although I confess to having Gary Sinese's autograph]
