I have an older catalog software program that no one remembers how to use, Help?

Hey everyone I am new to this group but thought this would be a good place to post my dilema. I just took over a Middle High School Library and much of my collection was not entered into the catalog program. when I asked the person who is the former library aide (librarian retired, and aide is running elementary libraries because of budget cuts) how to fix this she told me that no one knows how to access that part of the system anymore. I am using Winnebago Spectrium. It took me and one of my high schoolers and an operating manual to figure out how to enter new students this year. It is just me running the library and while I hope to update the system in the near future but wonder if it is worth my time to try to figure this out since I don't know how soon I will be able to do this. any suggestions?

OK - I know I'm strange for doing this, but I still have an ancient Mac behind my desk that runs my old Winnebago program - the one before Spectrum! I keep it because I love the barcodes it makes. We switched to Follett years ago, but I really liked the Winnebago "smart" barcodes, so when I process new books, I wind up doing some of the work twice.

Bethany - can you get an answer from your administration as to when they will upgrade? Maybe with Microsoft settlement money? If you will be upgrading within a year, I probably wouldn't do anything with Spectrum. If it will be longer than that, I'd try to figure it out and start entering or loading data.

Depending upon the size of your collection - there are some free/reasonably priced library automation systems out there. It may be time to upgrade.

My boss will be back tomorrow I will ask her if she thinks she could help. We are a small public library but shortly before I came to work her she had switched from Spretrum - which she loved but was told cataloging records would be unavailable.

oh I forgot to add that she found out later she could get them but I forgot what she said about how she would have to do it. I know she hates the system we have now and wishes she had stayed with Spectrum.
