If you like Plato, then you should read Christopher Phillips books. He uses the Socratic Method in real life and writes about how others use it. They are very interesting reads.

There's this really nice novel called Sophie's world. Tracing philosophy right from Democratis and before to modern science and the big band theory. Its a bit amateurish but quite fun and enjoyable.

Hi,
I really love Sophie's world. Could anyone recommend me other novel based philosophy books. I love philosophy but also need some motivation to read.

I've been reading books about a branch of philosophy called Phenomenology, and find it very interesting. I don't know, but you might wish to move forward in time and move from the early philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle to the next century or so. I'd recommend obtaining a book that is an introduction to philosophy. This would take you through all periods up to the present time, which might give you a pretty well-rounded education in the topic. Good luck!

Thanks,
Ellen

You may also like to read "Story of Philosophy" by Will Durrant.
If you are interested in knowing about Eastern philosophy, books by Alan Watts would be good point to start with. These are excellent books written for the Western minds. Some of these books are: The Book, The Book of Zen, Philosophies of Asia etc.

If you like to have a general overview of philosophy from ancient to modern times, i think you would find something like "Story of Philosophy" both insightful and intriguing. On the other hand, if you like novel based philosophy, i would say "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance", "Sophie's World", "The Stranger" or even "Atlas Shrugged" (this one a little debatable) can solve your purpose.
I am personally interested in Existentialist lines of philosophy these days and would strongly recommend Kafka's short stories to anyone who wants to learn existentialism by reading fiction otherwise of course you can directly start reading its bible "Being and Nothingness"

A great contemporary intro into philosophy is the book: Like a Splinter in your Mind by Matt Lawrence. His book discusses the philosophic issues raised in the Matrix Trilogy of films and is a great overview of a great span of philosophic topics!

Another great book is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

You made a very good start with Plato and Aristotle. I would encourage you to continue with some of the original texts of philosophy as you pursue your goal to "understand philosophy step by step". Some favorites of mine include Augustine's Confessions, Meditations on Philosophy by Descartes, Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, The Prince by Machiavelli and John Locke's Second Treatise of Government. All of these are essential texts in the history of philosophy and they are all relatively short and readable.

You will laugh, but I highly recommend 'The Tao of Pooh' it explains the philosophy of Taoism through Winnie the Pooh. Also, Tao Te Ching, but it's much more serious :)

I recommend you start with 'A History of Philosophy', Volume 1,2 and 3 by Anders Wedberg ,or even better but very lengthy is 'The History of Philosophy ' by Frederick Copleston.

Heoll Kreshnick, as you have already started with the original most sophisiticated texts, I don't see why you shouldn't continue. I would definately recommend you read Plato's dialogues: The Apology and The Trial. After that, The Prince by Maciavelli. Those are easier than Descarte, Hegel, Hedger, Hume, Rousseau and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. However all mentioned above are a must, such as Discarte's Meditations and Philosophy of Right by Hegel. I believe at this point you'll enjoy the dialogues and The Prince the most. Great books, enjoy your time!

Thnx Alaa D .Im planning to read Plato's The Apology... this summer ,cuz now im very busy studying for university. But first i thought it would be great to read Kur'an to get a religios point of view ,cuz every idea i have about something ends up to God and i want to study that part of life cuz is very important i think.I read Descartes and i liked it alot .About Nicomachean Ethics ... i search for it in many places in my country but i havnt found it translated in albanian language ,hope ill find it somewhere .. else i have to read it in english.Your suggestion for The Prince - Maciavelli looked very interesting and im going to add that one in my list of books , so thanks again !

It seems like a lot of these recommendations are "pop" philosophy and are more about explaining away the nuances of philosophy than about philosophy itself. If you want to delve into some of the "greats" I reccomend picking up The History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell. His introductions to some of the most important philosophical works are very elucidating. Other philosophers to check out: Descartes, Hobbes, Hume, Leibniz, Husserl, Heidegger, Ricouer and Bergson.
