Graphic Novels/Comics

I thought this group would be a good place to expose each other to great graphic novels that are out there. We can add them to the group shelf and put a comment in the 'discuss' area about why you thought it was good. I'll start by putting a bunch of graphic novels that I thought were really good, and should be read.

    What did you read today?

On several message boards I visit this is one of THE most frequented topics and I'd like to install it here, too. :)
Fell free to post what you read recently.

    For me it was today:

GUNSMITH CATS - REVISED EDITION Vol. 3
    Sonoda
    9/10
I love that comic. It's full of action, brilliant characters, has a lot of erotic and a love for the detail.

    OLD BOY Vol. 4
    Tsuchiya, Minegishi
    8/10
Compared to the WTF?! ending of the movie this final volume is a little disappointing but still better than your average manga.

    EXAXXION Vol. 5-7
    Sonoda
    7/10
Kenichi Sonoda definitely has a Lolicon. *g*
While this comic is quite entertaining it doesn't hold up to GSC.

BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL Vol. 17-19
    Samura
    9/10
It's a little decompressed (at this speed it will finish with like volume 200) but the art is wonderful and the story highly entertaining.

    HOMUNCULUS Vol. 4-5
    Yamamoto
    8/10
This manga defines the term "disturbing". It's good nonetheless.

I read Persepolis today. I read Persepolis 2 last week. It didn't seem to matter that they weren't read in the order they were published. Both were pretty eye-opening, powerful.

Haven't collected the books from the box yet, so I am at least two or three months behind in the titles I read. But I think I would read just about anything with the word HOMUNCULUS in it, let alone the title. cool

Persepolis is very, very good. I also recommend "Chicken with Plums" and "Embroideries" , also by Marjane Satrapi.

And "Homunculus" may or may not be what you expect from it. ;)

      From today's list:

HALL OF FAME VOL. 12: FLOYD GOTTFREDSON
      Gottfredson et al
      10/10
Finally Egmont got around to dedicate one of their nice hardcover books to the best Disney penciller EVER (IMO).
A strange yet entertaining mix is in this volume - Mickey against Nazis and an adventure with an African person that makes "Tintin in Africa" pretty tame compared to this and would the CRA probably give a heart attack! *g*

      WORLD WAR HULK #3
      Pak, Romita Jr.
      9/10
Still rocks. Hulks kicks butt and Romita delivers the eyepopping pictures to this epic. Really one of the best artists these days.

      THE IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN #11
      Kirkman, Hester
      10/10
Boy will I miss this brilliant series. It has everything one can crave for - action, fun, beatiful artwork and interesting characters. Damn you all for buying crappy comics when you could've bought "Ant-Man" instead! :(

      CLOCKWORK GIRL #0
      O'Reilly, Hanna, Bond
      8/10
The artwork is just wonderful and the short story pretty nice. I'm looking forward to the regular #1 and I recommend it to everybody that likes the "Flight" anthology. :)

    Today I read:

Thor V.3 #02: 5: Meh. Getting into this character and not really digging it so far.

Batman Detective Comics #something (latest one): 8: I love me some Batman and I like his mood in this

Countdown #39:8: I'm sticking with this series no matter what and sometimes I regret that. Right now I'm enjoying Piper and Trickster and really liked the last page.

Lately I've completed the Fables series and the Walking Dead both 9/10 if not higher for me.

I should also mention I'm reading All Star Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder. It's written by Frank Miller and is another take on the very dark Batman. I'm on issue 5 and Superman and Wonder Woman made out. Weird, but interesting stuff.

THIS is how superhero books should be - an intriguing story, no editorial interference, no crappy retcons, just highly entertaining comic books with great, great art.

I just finished Astro City - the tarnished angel. I've read the four I can get my hands on in Denmark (Astro City - life in the big city, Astro City - confessions, Astro City - the family album and Astro City - the tarnished angel). This might sound like a stupid question, but are there others?

I really liked them - I've only recently begun reading superhero stuff (Batman, Marvel 1602 etc), and I enjoy it immensely!

I just finished reading "Tech Jacket. [vol. 1], Lost & found" by Robert Kirkman. It was interesting but nothing great.

I also just re-read Creature Tech by Doug TenNapel and I have to say that it is really a fantastic graphic novel. He has become one of my favorite writers and illustrators and this is one of his best. If you have not read it you should.

I've read The Boys, the fourth volume of Flight, Embroideries, and The Fun Home recently. I recommend the first three. Garth Ennis is sick, and I love him for it. The artwork in Flight is sublime, and Marjane Satrapi's Embroideries is like an afternoon that shouldn't end so quickly. You're on your own with Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir, which was just too everything for me. My review says it all.

After that, I'm dusting off a classic, The Watchmen, which I haven't read in years.

IMO Ennis got worse once he completed "Preacher". Now most of his comic read all the same. So I was quite surprised that "Boys" was at least entertaining. Did you read "The Pro" (one of his few REALLY brilliant comics post-Preacher). That thing was awesome beyond believe. :)
"Flight" are just some of the greatest comics ever created. I love every single volume.
      Glad you like Embroideries, too.

I read The Pro a few years ago... hilarious. You might be onto something with the idea that Preacher is Ennis's opus, but he's not all dried up yet. Still waiting for Satrapi's book about her uncle to come in, Chicken with Plums. If I remember, you'd recommended that to me, too.

I re-read Watchmen a couple of weeks ago. I've read it countless times but there is always something new there to find. This time I just sat back and enjoyed how the pirate story and main narrative intertwined. The first time I read it I found the Black Freighter part a real chore. I remember I either skipped over it or I went back and read it separately. I really missed out.

I just finished reading Fell: Feral City by Warren Ellis. Police detective with mysterious past working the worst beat possible. The art is by Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night) and his style fits the story perfectly. This book reminds me of Desolation Jones also by Ellis. I'd recommend both.

I just read Annihilation Volume 2. I'm really loving Marvel's big cosmic storyline from last year so far. Part of me is sad I didn't read it as it was coming out, but I'm glad I have it now in TPB format. I've honestly never been a huge Marvel reader, but some of their cosmic characters have been my favorite. I would easily say that Thanos is my favorite Marvel Universe character of all time, and I have to admit I'm probably one of 4 people on the face of the planet that owns nearly all of the original 60 issue run of Quasar =P This story looks like it's going to topple Thanos Quest and Infinity Gauntlet as my #1 favorite Marvel story line.

It's about a guy who works at a book store who wants to become a writer and is in that stage between college and adulthood. He has a friend who wants to write comic books, a girlfriend who writes for a magazine, one roommate does comic books, and the other is a teacher. (everyone in the book pretty much is a writer.) It's acutally really funny. I think I connected with it because I work in a library and some of the questions he gets about books are the ones I get. It's a pretty thick graphic novel but I think it's worth the read. I may have mixed some of the characters up but don't let that stop you. :)

Technically it was yesterday, but I read the 4th volume of DMZ last night. My god, that series only gets more amazing as it goes. Friendly Fire's story is one that I can very well imagine happening in this day and age, which makes me very sad. The story is told in a very "harsh realities of war time" way, and in a way worries me more about where the world is at today, but I think more people should be reading books like this and raising their analytical awareness of the good and bad possibilities of the world today. One of the most interesting bits was that the foreward was written by an army soldier. His most telling comment was where he said, "When DMZ happens, I just hop I get to choose sides." Note he says "when", not "if". I really hope it doesn't come to that.
