Graphic Novels/Comics

I thought this group would be a good place to expose each other to great graphic novels that are out there. We can add them to the group shelf and put a comment in the 'discuss' area about why you thought it was good. I'll start by putting a bunch of graphic novels that I thought were really good, and should be read.

Would You Read/Buy a Graphic Novel in Electronic Format (e.g. on an Ebook Reader)

I recently gave into the temptation to buy an Amazon Kindle, and I was surprised at how many graphic novels were available as ebooks. As an avid lover of books themselves (i.e. the look and feel of them), there are some that I will always buy. I bought the Kindle to buy certain kinds of books to save space, have portable versions, make notations etc. But I can't imagine buying an ebook that contains illustrations, least of all a graphic novel for which the art is critical to telling the story, and is, well, art! Would you?

As much as I am down with digital distribution, books is one format where I really have to say I prefer to have it in my hands. As much as I love reading things like web comics, I just prefer reading off paper than I do off of a computer screen. Maybe one day when there's a reasonably affordable high resolution portable device where I can store all my reading material and have access to it anywhere, I'll be more into it. But I still can't imagine reading w/o the physical act of thumbing through pages being the majority for me.

The physical act of reading the graphic novel is so much more personal and makes you feel more connected to the characters. If it becomes another image in a screen, then one would loose the connection to their characters.

Don't forget affordable! This is particularly true if the artwork is in color. It raises the price significantly not only for viewing but also for storage space because I think that makes the electronic files bigger.

I think you're right, Johnny. They have this knew techology -- e-Ink -- that is supposed to give the experience of reading something on paper with the way it looks. But I don't know if that translates to artwork, especially if it's in color.

No way, I don't even like to read an official document on screen, let alone a creative piece of work. A piece of work is best suited when designed for a medium, crossing over from one medium to another is just going to mess up the experience.

Besides from the "bonding" you experience when reading a printed graphic novel or the smell of a new book, don't you get a headache when looking at a screen for an hour?? I bought the Iron Man back issues on DVD, but i stopped reading them because i can only get trough an issue without the feeling that my heads gonna pop any minute.

Graphic novels are the only things I can read on the computer. I still prefer to have it in my hands so I can easily flip back, etc, but I can deal with them electronically if I have to.

I've been reading a lot of web comics lately, and most of them are strips. I tried reading a downloaded back issue of The 99, and I had to take three days to read it. Reading articles on the screen is fine for me, but I enjoy comics much more when they reflect light instead of emitting it.

I think the Kindle is a wonderful little device, amazing for having wireless anywhere. And as a technology lover i think everything should start to integrate with technology....except comics.

For me there is just something about holding the book in your hand and just feeling the weight of it. Plus you only get black and white. and for me I'm so proud I can point to my comics shelf and everyone can see my massive collection
