    Young Adult Crime and Mystery

Our school library would appreciate any suggestions for good crime and mystery books for the grade 9-12 age group. We are trying to improve this section, and boost readership.

that fact that I'm having trouble thinking of titles makes me think there is an undertapped market. in high school most of us interested read the adult crime and mysteries that often were not in the school library.

Yes, I believe it is an undertapped market. We need more mysteries designed for grades 9-10 especially, that are not 'silly', but quality. The adult ones can be considered as senior reads, and be read by the grade 11's and 12's, however, some of these story lines are even a bit too 'old fashioned' for them. They need something 'new' and 'exciting', but geared to their age.

gotta include Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King. I'll check my library shelves because I know I have 'em, they're just not popping

Thank you for your suggestion. It looks like a great story! I don't believe we have that one. Please keep any suggestions coming, particularly anything set in present day, that would be 'hip'!!

The Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz are great. Also the other series by him, I think it is called the Gatekeepers Trilogy. Artemis Fowl series is great but may suit slightly younger kids, or some older kids who don't read quite as well. Also other books by the author Eoin Colfer. Jonathan Stroud comes to mind, as also Christopher Paolini. Kids who read well at this age can try books by Michael Crichton, John Grisham etc. R.A.Salvatore is also excellent for this age, but it is the Adventure Fantasy genre. Alistair Maclean books are good, though might be dated, still pack a good punch (the good ones). I'm sure I'll think of others after I post this!

I thought I had more, so I've discovered a deficit. But...
Phillip Pullman - starting with RUBY IN THE SMOKE
Charles Higson - great early years James Bond - Blood Fever is one example.
    Jennifer Shute - User ID
Lauren Willig - starting with THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PINK CARNATION (a take off of The Scarlet Pimpernel - very funny - but very much for older YA's)
And then I had a bunch of regular adult mysteries. My students do like Jeff Abbott's PANIC.

I got this awesome book as a kid that had a crime description on the left and a black and white illustration on the right. Between the 2 you were left to solve the mystery. Is the back of the book were the solved case description. If anyone knows the title will they let me know - and then you might want to add it to your library. It was challenging (to me) and educational. I think YA through adults might enjoy it. ~V

High school girls would probably enjoy the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.
Donna Andrews writes a series with birds in the titles that is interesting and humorous. Dick Francis writes mysteries set in the world of horse racing. Joan Hess writes mysteries set in a backwoods area, with a humorous twist. Clive Cussler is good if they want more action than suspense. Carl Hiaasen is great if they are good readers.
