Christian Fiction

Who are your favorite authors?

Favorite types of fiction?

What authors have a Biblically based moral theme even if it is not specifically a Christian book? I'm thinking of Tolkien, Lewis, Chesterton.

Let's talk, explore, compare and share.

Anyone know good websites for buying Christian fiction books?

We do not have a Christian bookstore near us, but I like to browse titles. How do you buy your books? Recommendation only? Are there good websites out there for Christian fiction?

have you checked out Christian Book Distributors? www.cbd.com - they have more than just Christian fiction, but you can search just fiction if you want. Their prices are pretty good too.

I get tons from Amazon. Once you browse the authors you know, it will recommend other books bought by people who also bought the same author you did. the shipping is usualy 3.99 but I've found books for $0.01. So $4.00 is good for mailbox delivery. Good Luck

    www.paperbackswap.com.

You only pay for the postage. I've been using this service for a year now and it works great.

I am a HUGE fan of paperbackswap.com!!! There are lots of Christian fiction books available on there. Sometimes, you may have to wait awhile for the newer books, but when you think about only paying for postage, and not the actual cover price of the book, you can't beat it! I've probably gotten 100 books off of there since I joined last winter.

I also recommend cbd.com. I have ordered books from them several times over the years, and I have never had a problem with their service.

I've just joined paperbackswap and I'm liking it. For authors I really like though, I will continue to buy their books new to support them and the Christian publishing industry. It's great to share books, but the authors/publishers don't make any money that way. I want to help ensure my favorite authors keep putting out stuff for me to read!

Connie, glad to hear that you're liking PBS. I don't often buy books when they're first released, but there are a few authors (Karen Kingsbury, Francine Rivers, Robin Lee Hatcher, etc.) that I make exceptions for when they release a new book. Unfortunately, I have a tight budget, and buying everything at the store doesn't work for me. We also have a Hasting's store in my town, and they sell a lot of used books that I'll occasionally buy.

I know about the tight budget - I'm a single mom of 5 (4 at home.) I don't buy a lot of books new, but I guess I think of it as putting my money where my mouth is - it's important to me to have fiction that reflects my values, so whenever I can, I'm going to support that industry and that author by choosing to buy new. Because let's face it, if they don't make money, it's not worth it for them to put out the new material.

I like paperbackswap for books by authors I've never read before - a try before you buy kind of thing I guess, and for books I want to read that aren't necessarily Christian, like I've heard good things about The Kite Runner and would like to read it, but it's not important enough for me to invest in that author or publishing house. And I like it for kid's books - my kids read like fiends and getting to the library doesn't really work for us. My 11 year old can read a 800 page novel in the matter of 4 hours, so I don't want to pay full price for something she's going to devour in almost mere minutes :)

Are you all seeing the same ads I'm seeing on this page? I think Shelfari has possibly gotten the advertisements under control. Several of these are about Christian book sites! I like that.

It's probably been mentioned, but I get a lot through Christian Book Distributors site...they usually have the best prices. I know that Family Christian Stores has a website you can purchase from, too.

I have discovered that Christianbook.com is great.
Really good prices and shipping rates (even for international shipping). They also have deals on series of books and that can save you several dollars buying that way than buying each book in the series separately.

If you're trying to get out of print books Amazon is great (although for me it's an international order and the shipping generally costs more than the book itself).

I like to go on Ebay and look under the authors I like. Often times, you can get a great deal on the newest books or even older editions. Some folks who sell on Ebay also bundle books and you can get GREAT deals on your faves. I am also an Ebay store seller and plan to add books to our inventory, since I have lots of books that I have read and are just collecting dust.

I usually use CBD or Amazon too, but an Ollie's Bargain outlet opened here. Been surprised at how many major Christian authors they carry for cheap!

Since I have access to Barnes & Noble, Borders and Half Price Books locally I don't have a problem finding good Christian books as well as bestsellers but it amazes me the turn in our country to buy books rather than go to the library. Most every community has a library and especially for those of you mentioning tight budgets you should find your local library. Also for those books you do buy it's a great place to leave them once you've read them to build up your local libraries.

The library is a great suggestion. However, if you're one of those folks like me who are IMPATIENT, then it doesn't always work out so well. I can't sit on a waiting list for the next Kingsbury book that comes out. I want it NOW (don't know about you but I can devour them in a couple sittings). Also the library doesn't have a lot of Christian books that you can find other places. A lot of my favorite chick lit authors aren't even at the library yet. I do go to the library for my son's books just about every week, since he is into the fantasy genre and it's easy to find his there. Certainly more economical than paying $16 for the latest Erin Hunter book.

I'm telling you, Christian Book Distributor!! My wife and I have been with them to the point of getting free shipping. This works well with gift $$ we get at Christmas time. Imagine ordering close to $150.00 worth of stuff, and the shipping is on the house, courtesy of CBD!! You've gotta be with them for a little while for that to happen, but it is nice.

If you're looking for great reads, please check out my profile to find info about my Ebay store. I am cleaning out my shelves to make room for new books and have several good titles.
