I know about the tight budget - I'm a single mom of 5 (4 at home.) I don't buy a lot of books new, but I guess I think of it as putting my money where my mouth is - it's important to me to have fiction that reflects my values, so whenever I can, I'm going to support that industry and that author by choosing to buy new. Because let's face it, if they don't make money, it's not worth it for them to put out the new material.
I like paperbackswap for books by authors I've never read before - a try before you buy kind of thing I guess, and for books I want to read that aren't necessarily Christian, like I've heard good things about The Kite Runner and would like to read it, but it's not important enough for me to invest in that author or publishing house. And I like it for kid's books - my kids read like fiends and getting to the library doesn't really work for us. My 11 year old can read a 800 page novel in the matter of 4 hours, so I don't want to pay full price for something she's going to devour in almost mere minutes :)
