Recommend some stuff, let people know about new authors, help people find some good books to read.

I want to try to help people (including myself) find some lesser known, obscure, new, or under appreciated authors. I have nothing against Heinlein, Dick,...more »

Looking for an old book I read....please help if you can!

I'm hoping someone can tell me the title or author of this book. I read it back in the 80's and only really recall that the main character was believed by society to be the one that would save them. There were no cars or anything, and everywhere it was winter - all the time.

    I really appreciate any help.....

The only thing that comes to mind is The Giver, but that’s probably not your book.

Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Left Hand of Darkness" immediately comes to mind. This takes place on a winter planet (named Winter), and the main character's intention is to merge the civilizations. Probably not it, but I thought it was worth a shot.

It's probably not The Book Of Skaith either.

(We're very good at figuring out what it's NOT, aren't we, LOL?)

Haha yeah, i guess we can also rule out The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe...which is the only book that pops up on "eternal winter" on google. Sorry! Do you remember anything else? Was it fantasy or sci fi? Names? lol

Thanks for all the suggestions, but no none of them are it either. They all seem to have been published fairly recently - the book I'm after was published sometime in the 1980's or earlier. I read it in the 80's in paperback - and it took place on earth, but in the future - when every where was winter. What got me thinking about it was seeing that movie The day after tomorrow (for the umpteenth time). It may actually have come out around the time of the gas shortage in the 80's. It seemed to have that as part of the story, where there wasn't enough fuel anymore for anything. I'm assuming that it was science fiction, but I'm not positive - it just sounds like a sci-fi book to me.... :-)

Do you have *any* more details? Was it a new book at the time? Was it long, short? Any character names, or other characters at all?

Sounds a bit like the Genesis song "One for the Vine." ;)
