Sci-fi group for those who grok - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grok

Recommend some stuff, let people know about new authors, help people find some good books to read.

I want to try to help people (including myself) find some lesser known, obscure, new, or under appreciated authors. I have nothing against Heinlein, Dick,...more »

2008 Hugo and Nebula award nominees

    New discussion group:
    http://www.shelfari.com/groups/22712/about

The 2008 Nebula and Hugo award nominees have been announced. If there is sufficient interest within the Shelfari community (that would be, more then 10 active participants), I will find the links to all the nominees that are available on-line, and publish a list of all the nominees that are available in printed format only.

Then, depending on interest, we can do a combination of group reads and/or discussions on some or all of the nominees.

Both the Nebula's and Hugos have 'suffered' in recent years, in terms of a shrinking readership. The objective of this group is to increase readership of the nominees for these 'best of SF' awards, particularly for the short form entrees (short story, novelette, novella).

As long as I can find time I'm in. I normally try to read all the short fiction that's been posted on the net.

Good. It's a gap that should be filled: 'maybe' half the nominees for the short fiction have them available on the net. If there is sufficient group size and interest, I will reach out to each of the authors, and encourage them to make the stories available for download on Amazon shorts (e.g. John Twelve Hawks, author of The Traveler has done this, download some short works of his for 99 cents). Seems to me the readership is there, if someone on the internet generates a high visibility location for downloading.

I read Nebula and Hugo nominees now and then, but today I find most of the best science fiction is small press stuff that doesn't get big exposure or awards. I think the reason readership of the "award winners" is in decline lately is due to the same reason "Academy Award" winning films aren't being watched as much. The films and books being nominated aren't that great, and are being inflated by a select group in the industry.

Is this to say that any book nominated for a major award sucks? Absolutely not. Does the fact that a million people read a book make it worthy of an award? Again, no. However, there is a growing trend for books and films to be "nominated" because they champion a social agenda, or have a message that a select group thinks everyone should see. I believe this is wrong, and it is destroying the entertainment industry, marginalizing good stories which are written to entertain and don't indoctrinate one way or another.

All the short works are now posted in the new discussion group for the 2008 nebulas and hugos (http://www.shelfari.com/groups/22712/about).

The Hugo and Nebula awards are the 'academy awards' for SF, annually recognizing the best writing in SF. Hugos are nominated by readers (at the annual world SF convention), and by writers (the science fiction writers of america). The 'best' of SF, over the last 40 years, have been recognized by these awards.

If you like SF, or are interested sampling the genre and want to start with the best, join in. This group will be as active as the member's participation. If there is a lot of discourse, I will flag the discussion group to each of the authors who are nominees.
