Science fiction includes such a wide range of themes and sub-genres that it is notoriously difficult to define. This is a list of definitions that have been offered by authors, editors, critics and fans over the years since science fiction became clearly separate from other genres. Definitions of related terms such as "science fantasy",...more »

    SF audio books - Recommendations

The last week i've been listening to Hyperion by Dan Simmons and I was just wondering if anyone in this group has listened to some and would like to recommend any?

With Hyperion the story is told by a whole cast of people and they do a pretty good job. All of the pilgrims have their own voice which is nice. As the book is quite big the audiobook does take quite long...About 21 hours....

If done correctly i think an audio book can make a nice change to reading and I would recommend this one.

The Potter books are good on audio. The last real good book I heard was World War Z.

Damn...I've never found Hyperion by Dan Simmons in audio.
(course I'm not spending 60 bucks for it, so...)

The Blind Assassin, by Margaret Attwood is good.

Dune (either Frank miller or George Guidall reading: there are others that kinda suck actually).

Never let me go by Ishiguro, Kazuo. Was pretty good

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray bradbury Awesome of course.

A clockwork orange by Anthony Burgess,

1984 by Orwell the one where Frank Miller is reading is the best.

Blade Runner (do androids dream of electric sheep?) . by Philup K Dick.

Jack. Finney’s The invasion of the body snatchers was good

I’ve listened to around 10 or so of Hienlein’s on tape or CD which are great stories of course but they always get a guy reading them that sounds a bit Poindexter-ish.

War of the worlds, The Time Machine and The island of Doctor Moreau were great on CD

And Greg, Bear, has a number of his out on CD: along with Asimov, Neal Stephenson, and Scott Orson Card and many other’s. And there are new titles being added all the time, seeing that the audio book thing is exploding right now.

The Feed is awesome in audio once you get used to the noise level and how the story works.

I finally finished Hyperion and overall I really enjoyed it.

The ending of the book is quite sudden and I'm not sure yet about the quality of the story of the consul at the end.
But overall I give it 4 out of 5.

I need to find the sequal fast.....What is gonna happen to our pilgrims at the time tombs....I need to know!

A book I recently listened to and would recommend to everyone is The Graveyard book by Neil Gaiman read by Neil Gaiman.
The book is amazing. It's not SF of course but very enjoyable none the less and the author does such a great job in presenting his book.

5 out of 5 for this one.

I am starting with this one next. I have seen the series on tv but never read the book.
I remember as a kid I was quite impressed with it so I'll see how I like it now.

Nice to see this list growing!
I'm really enjoying the fall of Hyperion at the moment and am just amazed at the complexity of this story. Together with Hyperion I would have to say that these two books are some of the best SF books I've ever read....heard.

The voices for the fall of Hyperion are the same as with Hyperion and they are great. Highly recommended as well!
