Anyone listening to audio books? If so, how do you get them?

I like listening to audio books while traveling. Currently I buy audio books on iTunes but I frequently buy the paper book later so I can reference it. I don't really like paying for books twice. Does anyone have any suggestions for ways to get audio books that are less expensive? (My local library has slim pickings.) I've noticed a few iPhone apps that look promising. Has anyone used them? Any other ideas? Thanks!

    Hi Sarah,

I listen to a lot of audio books. There are two ways of acquiring them. One get a subscription deal audible.com the other is to download them illegally via your preferred torrent host (an option I don't recommend due to disrupted abridging and often wrong order of chapters).

    Best regards,
    Darri

    Hi Sarah,

My name is Haike and I work as an editor for getAbstract. I just saw your question and thought you might like our audios. Are you familiar with getAbstract? What we do is quite simple: We summarize business books on five pages and offer them online. We also produce audio versions of those summaries. They are approximately 8 minutes long and, once you have a subscription, you can download as many as you want.

We have two free summaries on our Web site (www.getAbstract.com). Check them out if you want.

Your library might have more books than you think. Most libraries let you go online an order any book from their system. You don't always have to live in the county to get a library card. I have cards from three differenc counties; one where I live, one where I work, and one where I do most of my shopping. Between the three systems, and can find almost any book out there. I can access their catalogs online, choose the books I want to hear, and put them on hold. They are delivered to my local branch, and I can pick them up at my leisure. I have an hour commute each way, so I listen to about one audio book a week. At that rate, I'd go broke if I tried to buy enough to last even a month.
The only drawback is you have to wait for the more popular books. I am currently 5 on the waitlist for Outliers.

I read/listen to library books non stop. It's legal and the selection is quite large. You have to wait sometimes a few months for a great new book but there are so many great books from the past several years you'll be busy for a long time. I'm fortunate we have such a great library but you should definitely check out your library.

Audible is also a very good deal if you want to read/listen to newer books.

I've had a subscription to audible for about a year and I highly recommend it. Each audiobook ends up costing only about $15. Another plus is they all work in iTunes (aka on my iPhone) so it's easy for me to listen while I'm on the road.

Hi! Audible is fantastic. I have a subscription deal with them, and I simply select the book I want, download it, and burn a CD to take in the car or put on my MP3 player.

Sorry, I forgot to mention Internet Achives. The site has hundred of books (as well as music and other sites of interest) that can be listened to or downloaded FOR FREE. Many of the classics are on the site, and I've enjoyed most of the Sherlock Holmes tales, as well as a couple Agatha Christie and almost all of Rex Stout's tales. It's worth a look.
