    Mobile Site? iPhone/Touch App?

    Save Changes Cancel
I searched this group and didn't find a related post, so hopefully I'm not repeating others. Sorry if I am.

Are there any plans for a mobile version of Shelfari? I know phone access to add/view books on your shelf would be great for when I'm browsing a book store or talking to friends about great books. A lot could be accomplished with a simple mobile site, and even more with a Mobile Safari site, or a native application for Mobile OSX/PalmOS/WinMo/Blackberry. I'm just curious if there is anything happening related to this.

    That's an amazing idea!!!

I may be dreaming, but here's my crazy idea. The iPhone (an most other smart-phones) have built in cameras. Let's say you were in a bookstore and wanted to add a book you found to your I Plan To Read and Wish List shelves. It would be to cool if you could take a picture of the barcode on the book with your phone's camera. The Shelfari app could then scan the picture and pull up all the information about that book by its ISBN number.

I'm sure writing an app that could turn an iPhone into a barcode reader would be immensely more difficult that I'm making it sound, but anything's possible.

      Moridin,

I think that level of functionality is certainly the holy grail of a program like this. I think the way to accomplish it would be to look at the mechanics behind the Shazam music identification program (or the many other music ID programs for all sorts of devices) where an audio snippet is recorded on the device, then uploaded to a server for analysis. The phone would snap the pic, then upload it to a server that would try to pull out the barcode through optical recognition. Then possible matches would be sent back to the device for the user to look through.

I just installed Pocketpedia, and it has a lot of the functionality I'd want from a program, but it's missing that "Sync with Shelfari" button! :-)

Oh, I so want Shelfari to create an iPhone app. And your barcode reader idea is brilliant to say the least.

We have a mobile site (http://m.shelfari.com) that allows you view your books and your friend's books. However, you can't add books to your shelf on that site.

*A little iPhone specific tip, there is an special icon for the mobile site if you add it to your home screen.

Have the developers considered creating an iPhone App in addition to the mobile site?

An iPhone app (or at least a iPhone optimized website version) would be great particularly with regard to the fact that my iPhone's safari often crashes when surfing shelfari with it.

I agree, either an app or a mobile version of the site would be amazing. Maybe an app just for iPhone would be great for me but selfish, so a mobile site would be a more commonly used version.

Check out the SnapTell app. They have already solved the hard problem of taking the photo and recognizing the title. They use it to market places to buy the book, but I would love to see them create an app that would allow me to quickly upload all my books onto Shelfari. That would be great.

I would love to see an iphone application!! I am also having problems viewing the site via Safari. It would be great to be able to access easily. I own lots of books and use Shelfari to catalogue what I have, I love being able to access the site to see if I own a particular book.

A good reason to use LibraryThing, which has a decent mobile version.

Nah. You can't add books to the shelf so I'm switching to GoodReads.

I've used the mobile shelfari site, but what I really need is the ability to add and organize my shelves and books from my iPhone. Maybe use partnership with Amazon?? They have an amazing app to find books by taking pictures, but that's it. It's a good start. I wouldn't lament losing the photo-finding ability in the (future) Shelfari app, though, just for the sake of ease of developing. You have no idea how much I need this app!!

Sorry for reviving an old discussion, but just to be clear, are you guys thinking about developing an iphone app or not? If not, are you guys thinking about enhancing the mobile site?

From your previous comment is sounded like you guys are going to rely on the (not very good) mobile site. The biggest feature I'd like to see from Shelfari is good mobile managing of my profile. Right now, the mobile site is only good for viewing, which isn't very useful at all.

Hi Bookmaven--Currently our developers are focusing their attention on other improvements & features. That doesn't mean we'll never do an iPhone app or make improvements to the mobile site, just not in the near future.

It has my vote. I just got my iPhone and that's one of the first apps I looked for. I live out in the boonies and don't get great internet service so Shelfari takes forever to load. I don't update it as often as I used to because it's too time consuming. With an app, I could do it anytime. Also, I like the idea of being able to check my book list while I'm out shopping for new books.

SnapTell for the iphone rocks and is free. Still would like a Shelfari app but for now I use snaptell, then transfer the info by hand later to Shelfari. With SnapTell all you do is take a picture of the book cover and it goes out and finds the book. RedLaser is another great app for making lists, it's a bar code reader. Indiebound for the iphone works with indiebound.org and has a wish list. You would think with all the competition Shelfari would have one soon.

It would be nice if Shelfari would allow you to email books to add to your bookcase. Then you could use SnapTell's email feature to add the books into Shelfari. Either way Shelfari needs an app that provides standard Shelfari features but also has similar functionality to SnapTell. That would be ideal for me.

Why do you need an app? You can access the full site just fine from an iPhone or use the mobile site.

Because an iPhone is not a regular computer. It has a 320x480 screen and it is too small for browser the full site when you are in a bookstore.

Can you imagine a native app with barcode support? You just need to point your mobile to a book and then Shelfari shows you all the reviews about that book. It would be amazing!

True. I just don't understand why people are always complaining that the mobile site isn't good enough. If you put in an extra couple minutes to zoom in and move around the page, I say it works just fine. It just takes a little more effort if you want to do more things.

Otaviocc, your idea does sound pretty nice :). You could always use Amazon Mobile (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000291661) to access Amazon reviews. There usually of a higher quality than Shelfari reviews anyways.

I have to add my two cents in.. In this day and age a mobile app is really a necessity for a website to continue thriving. Now that I can use my iPhone, I rarely use my laptop- a mobile app for Shelfari would ensure that many of us will continue to use this, rather than looking for solutions elsewhere.

I would love to see a Shelfari iPhone app. Others out there, like aNobii, have already done it, but Shelfari is the best.

I'm learning Objective-C, and I would love to try and make one! For simplicity's sake I would probably just make it a basic web browser that can only function with shelfari.com, and then use CSS hacks after the main screen to make the site look the way I want it too.

That way the app would be a lot smaller (and if it's small enough, Apple won't make me put ads on the App)

A mobile site is not enough. Please develop an iPhone application for Shelfari. I really do not want to switch applications for tracking my reading, book lists, etc., but without an iPhone app, and with a limited mobile site, I might not have another choice. With the iPad coming out very soon, I think there will be even more of a need for such an application. Please consider putting some time, money, resource into developing a Shelfari iPhone application. PLEASE? :)

And would it be okay for other developers to develop the Shelfari app?
