    When you're using Shelfari.com and you experience a bug or issues trying to do something, please let us know in this thread. Reporting all issues to one thread will help us keep track of the pending issues so we can get all the details needed to fix them.

    I'll just bring our brief discussion to your new thread Amanda.
    Yes, my new books are added...and all the free ones too...but only if I import and Shelfari simply takes too long to do that every day. Maybe I should try while I'm twinking around with Amazon reviews or whatever, but I haven't. I think I'll pick a day each week to do it...So far, I usually just 'add' them after a search. And I have copied a couple of my reviews from Amazon to here, and will do more. I still haven't even minorly marked all my stuff <sigh> And I wish there was a film Shelfari...or do I?

    I'm still trying to catch up with everything. I've read and watched films for 50+ years and would love to share...

    thx for starting new thread.
    repeat request which you seemed to think was a good idea back when I originally suggested it: could there be an easy click to "My Posts" sorted by "Most Recent" first? If you belong to several groups and Post with any regularity, this would be very helpful - and those are the ppl Shelfari (should) want to help. Thx.
    PS: another idea: Shelfari could all the word Shelfari to its Master Dictionary, eh?

    I don't which forum/thread to ask this question, so I spologize if it's in the wrong place. My questions is how do I search for a specific book either by its title or its author while I am in my bookshelf or while I am looking at a friend's. Right now, I am sort by title or author then I scroll through descending or ascending order which is very tedious, especially if it's starts with an alphabet like "L". Can you tell me of a faster way?

      For books on your own shelf, I recommend using the detail view instead of the shelf display. The detail view has a "filter" that approximates a search.

      There is no other way to search another member's shelf than what you are currently doing.

      It has been suggested in the past to at least have the alphabet linked, so you could click on the first letter of the title or author to get you to that place in your shelf faster, but nothing has come of that suggestion.

      For my own shelf, I usually just find it faster to look for the book (or author), in general, rather than searching through my own shelf.

      The "filter" on the detail view was a partial response to that request. I use it so often that I, now, bring that view up and leave it up all day in a separate tab to avoid that 1st load time consumption.

      I looked again and saw the "filter" box right there. I'm not sure why I couldn't find it the first time I looked, way back when the feature was announced. I'm sure I looked then and the box wasn't there! (Which is why I was confused...)

    I am not sure I am in the correct place for my issue. If I am not, please redirect me to someone who can help me. I seem to have 2 shelfari accounts. The one I have been actively using is this one (01515022631). I can log into it with my amazon.com id and password. However, if I go through Author Central using the same username and password, I go to a different account (01515011176). There is nothing on this other account except the fact that I have an author banner on my pic and it is tied to the book I wrote that is on sale in amazon.com.

    Is there any way to tie the two together? If not, can we delete the second account and link author central to my first account complete with author banner along my picture? Thanks!

    I am still having the same problem with connecting with Facebook with my book Reviews. I hit the share button and nothing happens. I have already tried disconnecting from facebook and reconnecting....

      Just dusted off my Goodreads profile so I can post to Facebook about what I'm reading...I love Shelfari, but it's really unacceptable that we've gone this long with no fix and no statement about the problem other than "we're working on it."

      I use Goodreads for posting to Facebook also, I just skip over the share button here on shelfari. And I agree that is is ridiculous that this issue has been going on for so long.

    On the 'next in series' recommendations page, please let me mark 'not interested in series'; otherwise, if I read the first book in a twenty-volume series and then decide that I don't like it, I have to click 'Not interested' on each volume, refresh the page, repeat.

      I would also like this! I have been getting frustrated that the same series keep showing up in the "next in series," despite not being interested in reading the rest of the series.

    This is just a tiny little thing, but on the title edit guidelines there's a typo in the second bullet point under "Examples".

    It reads: The title of The Road (Oprah’s Book Club) should be changed to The Road. You may add this to the Oprrah’s Book Club community list on the book page.

    There's 2 "R"s in the second Oprah instead of one.

    I was wondering what happend to the goal that stated how many books you had read last year, and then showed how many you had read this year. This was a goal that I thought was a better feature than the "How many books do you wish to read this year".

      Go to your home page. On the right hand side under Your Reading Goals is Your Reading Stats. Click the link to view your stats. Under the bar graph of your reading over the years will be your books read this year compared to last year, and whether you are ahead, behind or on pace.

      If you collapse your shelf on the new home page so that it just shows the heading "Your Shelf" and not the mini shelf itself, you will get the comparison to last year (or at least I do)

      I took the total number from last year and put it as my goal for this year. It doesn't do a straight comparison, it just tells you what percentage you are at to read your goal for this year, but it was as close as I could think of.

    Community ] Members like you -- I was very hopeful when I clicked this link but I get a message "Add books to your shelf to see members like you." which seems a little strange considering Profile ] My Shelf reports 10,958 books on my shelf. Is this feature still in development? does it only work with up to a thousand books? please help - what am I doing wrong?

      It only shows people who are reading the same books as you are.

      I believe there use to be more features, but that is all we have now.

      If you want to test, you could put on your "I'm reading" shelf, one of the books that I have on my I'm reading shelf and I should pop up in that page.

      I'm running into the same problem as a new member. I've added books to my self. Rated them, marked them as read, planning to read, and reading now. I waited to see if it only got updated overnight, but no luck. Per your recommendation I added a couple of popular books at that top of the list to my shelf, and still no luck.

      This is the single feature that I was after... mostly for my son. He reads a phenomenal pace, and I sometimes struggle to find books he's interested in. I thought this site might help. To be host I was really hoping it was more than just books in the "read" list. A weighted system would have been ideal. Maybe at least don't count books with one or two stars (he reads a lot of stuff he doesn't like for school too).

      Either way I thought I would point out that the "Members Like You" feature doesn't work with new members in the same way it doesn't appear to work with existing members.

      Try this book: http://www.shelfari.com/books/9636454/Medium-Raw I am reading it now, and there are other people reading it too. If you add it to your reading now shelf you will see other people (and me!).

      The only other suggestions I have is join some active groups with people of similar interests. Also there is a link on the right of your home page to What Should I Read Next? ( http://www.shelfari.com/recommendations/networkfavorites/unread )
      which has Friend Favourites, Recommendations, Next in Series, Favourite Authors and Community favourites. I have found this to be quite useful.

      Also if you look at peoples shelves you can see how many in common you have with them. I have looked at your shelf, and I can see that we have "Books in common (0)" If you have a few in common with someone, ask if you can follow them to get some book recommendations.

    Hi, I just joined Shelfari, and it was so easy to copy the widget to my Weebly site! I chose 8 professional books to start, and although I see my Shelfari bookcase, only one book shows up on the shelf. How can I adjust settings, or reset my widget so that all of my selections show up on the bookcase? Thanks.

      The broken image was coming from Amazon. I have reported it there, and they have removed the picture in question. It should filter down to shelfari in a day or so.

      In future, you can report these type of images to Amazon directly, if you would like by using the "give feedback on images" link on the amazon book page.

    I have a book on my "planning to read" shelf that is bugged. I cannot delete it off my shelf. I can only 'add' it and it never gets added and thus can never be deleted. Anyway to fix this?

    I have embedded a shelf widget on my school media center page, but no matter how I modify it during the widget setup, it only ever shows one book on my shelf.     I was wondering if the "on your wishlist" functionality (the little box on the bottom right of the cover art) could be added when looking at a series list. I have no idea which books I have and don't have when looking at a series if I have added the ones I am looking for the the wishlist unless I go into each one and look into the profile. It seems like because it works on the normal pages, it would make sense to have it on the series list pages too.

      Yeah. I partially use this to keep track of the books I actually own, so I don't buy them again at used book stores/thrift stores/etc.

      Icing on the cake would b if this would carry over to the mobile site, so I could tell more easily than going into each book profile, but that may be too much to ask right now.

    As a UK user I have been much put out today to discover that a book I read a month ago and which was first published in the UK under the title "The Girl who Fell from the Sky" has subsequently been rebranded on Shelfari under its LATER US title of Trapeze and that all the book extras that I added have now disappeared without trace. How fair is that???? And now my edition (which is after all the FIRST editionof this title) doesn't even have a cover image. Does Shelfari aspire to be an international site or is it just US-centric?

      Firstly, a link to the book in question would have made it easier!

      It looks as though a combination was done on those two books. When librarians approve a combine we need to choose a "target". If information is already in the target work's sections, I believe the information will not carry across. (That is why it is also advisable to have a combine processed before requesting title/author changes and adding information).

      I have moved the 'Also published as "The Girl Who Fell from the Sky"' to the beginning of the description section. While there has been requests for the better ability to handle alternate titles, the only thing we can do at the moment is put them in the description section.

      I can't help you with the cover image. Amanda will probably have to address that. The only thing that I can suggest, is that you upload a cover image of your edition.

      Thank you for the quick response. I feel though that that the essense of my point has been missed. The first edition of this book was titled "The girl who fell from the sky". That therefore should have precedence over any subsequent edition, so to change the record wholesale to a later title is just incorrect. No cataloguing rules would ever endorse that. I would request that the record be altered to reflect the original title of this novel with a link made to the later title change. That is certainly how the British Library and the Library of Congress will be treating it in their catalogues.

      P.S. I'm not able to upload a cover image of the original as the copy I read was borrowed from my local library.

      The Shelfari rule for titling is two-fold: 1) the most "common" title found in the editions list and 2) the most "well-known" title - at this time that is a USA-based policy. Shelfari has not (yet) incorporated the non-USA Amazon sites. Therefore, the most "common" will most often be, in fact, the American version. You'll see this especially a bone of contention with the Harry Potter series.

      If you can find a copy of the cover online, you can download it from there. You may, should a "blank" edition not be available, need to create a member copy. The cover will display on your shelf but the title will be taken from the combined version which will, most likely, be the American title.

      Does this clarify the situation? I know it doesn't resolve it but ...

      Hi Cynthia--Whenever books are combined, we also "combine" the Book Extras information that was added to the editions combined. The book title and author are the two pieces of information that aren't automatically added.

      Our book covers originate on Amazon and it's possible that your cover image is no longer available because it's no longer available on Amazon. I just looked at your shelf and it does look like the cover/edition you've chosen (The Girl who Fell from the Sky) is visible.

    It would be quite an improvement if Shelfari used the title from the edition you select for your shelf. This would be very helpful for any title read in a language other than English. After combining different language titles, they essentially cease to exist.

    I posted this in the "Widget" group as well. A handful of my books in my widget are showing up with a blue cover only instead of the picture cover. (Of course, they are some of the more popular ones with students! Not such great PR with no cover picture.) From reading two previous posts from quite a while ago it seems others have had this problem. Any help with a solution? Thanks for your time.

    There is a bug happening with my shelf, the counter for books read are not keeping the count it keeps defaulting back to the original number, instead of it saying 267 books read it goes back to 258 and stays.. please contact me when this error or bug is fixed.

    Hi all,

    For the last few days, I've been experiencing problems with the "Edit" feature (the green radio button shown below the book listing). For instance, after I finished a couple of books, I tried to use the Edit tabs, which include one for Status Update, Tags, My Edition, etc. On each tab, the system gets stuck and a "Loading Information..." message comes up. It shows a circular revolving icon that seems like it's working, but after a few minutes, it freezes and nothing progresses. It's similar to the rainbow wheel/deathball that happens on computers.

    This happened for 2 different books, so it's not the book.

    Didn't know if anyone else is experiencing this hiccup, too.

    Is there any remedy for it, or are system upgrades going on behind the scenes that may be causing the trouble?

    I have noticed that, over time, covers of books that I have on my shelves tend to disappear and are replaced with transparent covers with a little square question mark in the middle, or with those ugly blue standard covers. It is not a big problem, as I can of course go to the list of editions and select a different cover for my books, but I was just wondering whether anything can be done to prevent this from happening.

    I've been monitoring these 'discussions'...or complaints...and I'm not too pleased with what I see. I haven't spent a lot of time at Shelfari...and I may be glad of that now. It seems the site has LOADS of issues...that aren't being fixed. I don't want to invest my time in such a site I don't think.

    That's sad. But not a surprise, considering Amazon's performance at other things...that have proven to be 'personal' issues...as in only encouraging me NOT to participate in forums, reviews, etc. I've removed most of my stuff.

    The world is no longer a place for honest, conscientious, caring, involved, friendly, generous, hard-working, intelligent, considerate or kind people anymore...and hasn't been for some time. And the internet is even worse...

    Hi,
    I'm not sure if this is the right place to report this or if is already being taken cared of.
    A few days ago I notice that some pages of books have no image (they have the symbol of image lacking). Maybe they changed the path to the images and the website can't locate them, I don't know. I saw this happening at least is these:

    When displaying my shelf this morning, two book covers have changed to generic versions. I don't see a way to change the cover, delete the first one and maintain the order of the books on the shelf. Why did the icon change?

      I think you're having the same trouble I am with the plain blue covers showing up in place of the pictures of the covers that were originally there. You can go in and change covers by clicking on the book. It will take you to the main page for the book. Click on Editions, then scroll down until you see one that has a cover you like. Click on add to my editions. Then when it displays both copies under My Editions, click on remove next to the one you don't want, and it will automatically display the new one on your shelf. With the way covers keep disappearing though, you might have to do that often.

      Yes - you can do that if the only concern is the cover image displayed on your shelf.

      However, this IS a defect in the Shelfari system so, hopefully, they will correct the issue and you won't need to play dial-the-editions/covers!

      Another ramification: If you have entered personal notes on the edition currently on your shelf, you will lose those notes if you remove that edition from your shelf. (The data will remain with that removed edition so if you ever put it back on your shelf, the notes will become visible to you at that time.)

      If you choose to add another edition for the sole purpose of showing a cover on your shelf but you leave the existing edition there too, a small "2" will appear on the upper left corner of the book icon on your shelf indicating that you have selected 2 editions.

      Under your account settings, you'll find the tab for "Shelf." Click that tab and then edit your shelf material.

    Hello! I am trying to create different widgets. I have tagged my books, but can't seem to use those tags to create the widget. When I click on the tag while working on making a new widget, nothing happens.

    Not sure if this is a bug, but I'm hoping someone can tell me.

    I've tried several time to download a list of books on my shelf and I never get anything except a message saying the list is being created. I've let it work away for up to seven hours with no result.

    I have 1600+ books. How long should it take to produce my list?

    Two days after posting this inquiry, I am still having the same issue. I have tried to create and download the list using Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox; on both wireless and wired connections; on three different computers; with and without my firewall; with and without my antivirus.

    I have never gotten past the "We're creating a file that contains a list of your books..." message. I've spoken with several Shelfari members who have successfully used this feature, some of them with many times more than the number of books on my shelf.

    I'd appreciate some help with this very frustrating issue.

    Two months out and still no success, and no response from Shelfari support.

    I have decamped to Goodreads, which has a larger community, more features, and fewer problems. Shelfari was always somewhat slow and clunky. When it was acquired by Amazon I had high hopes for future improvements; unfortunately it seems to have gotten worse. What a disappointment.

    The Search tool is having some trouble. It keeps returning that it didn't find any results. At first, I thought that Shelfari didn't have the books I was looking for in its database, but then I tried books I had on my shelf, such as Mattimeo by Brian Jacques. That didn't turn up a single result, either.

      I've also stopped getting any of my requested notification e-mails--the ones when I get a note and when I have a new follower are the ones that I especially hate to miss! (Especially since our new notes are now buried really far down on the homepage...)

    Hi Amanda, It's been a loooong time since I have contacted you for your help, but something has happened in my Shelfari account and I can't figure out what happened. The last time I received any messages was Friday, and all have the "notify me of new replies" box checked. What happened??

      starwolvie, I have removed my e-mail address as all of a sudden 60 messages showed up in my inbox. I have also unchecked the notify me of new replies from this section.

      This happened to me also. I stopped getting tge emails Saturday night and just started getting them last night around 8 PM. I don't know what happened but suddenly they started coming in again. Hopefully your emails will return to you soon as well.

    Hi. I'm just trying to arrange my books on my shelf in the order I want. The current instructions to do that seem outdated.
    I don't want to alphabetize or make chronological. I want to put them in the unique order that I prefer. Surely there's a way to drag and drop.
    Goodreads is much easier to use. They tell me to look for "customize" or "organize" and I don't see those options on screen. This drives me a bit nutty. Could someone tell me how to do this? Thanks.

    P.S. On another note, why does SULA or Toni Morrison not results in the search finding anything?

      Hi Dwight,

      The search is a bit flaky at the moment. I searched Toni Morrison and was able to find books http://www.shelfari.com/search/books?Keywords=Toni%20Morrison some times you need to press the search button more than a few times, or close the window and open a new one for it to work.

      On your read shelf there is the option to sort by custom. You can also change your sort order by going into list view and changing the sort number there.

      The way that you can sort your shelf is by tags. eg. This is all the books on my shelf I have tagged as Mystery http://www.shelfari.com/starwolvie/tags/mystery You can either bookmark that, or access that tag at the bottom of your shelf.

      If there's anything else you need to let me know, please ask away!

      By putting a book on Amazon, you "authorize" cover art for use on Shelfari, as it is owned by Amazon and pulls from the Amazon database.

      If it is something not available to Amazon (although that was the cover showing when I did an Amazon search for your Kindle title, soo...), you can switch covers by going to the Covers page of your book and following the inaccurate covers Report It link.

      This cover being used is not on Amazon, and was only briefly in an early file. I filed an inaccurate cover report 2 days ago with no change yet or response. The correct cover used on Amazon for this KINDLE edition was standard on SHELFARI until recently. Why would it change and who would change it?

      If you provide the link to the book, I'll investigate.

      For further information: If a cover has been added by a Shelfari member, you can report the cover as inappropriate from the "covers" list on the editions tab of the book.

      Be certain to add commentary about why the cover is inappropriate.

      If the change request to the Amazon book page has been accepted and implemented by Amazon, it will normally update on Shelfari within a day after that change on Amazon.

      Here is what you did incorrectly.

      You posted the new cover as a customer-supplied image to Amazon's book page. Shelfari doesn't use those images.

      What you SHOULD do is report that original cover as being incorrect - using the links at the bottom of this page - http://www.amazon.com/2018-Searching-Freedom-America-ebook/dp/B008DIPLRS/ref=tmm_kin_title_0 and/or reporting it via your author connection to Amazon (I don't know how that is done.)

      When Amazon replaces the wrong image with the correct one, the Shelfari entry will be automatically updated within about a day or so.

      It is the specific edition cover that is incorrect (according to your preferences.) The "correct" cover is NOT on the edition on the Amazon page. It is merely one of several choices because it was added as a member-provided cover and they display the last one uploaded. Shelfari will only import "official" covers.

      No - Earlier, when I looked on that Amazon page to which I linked above, the same cover that Shelfari shows WAS on the list of covers available. That cover is now gone.

      Here is the way that I understand it (and which all my own updates to Amazon pages have worked):

      1) If an Amazon member adds a cover to an Amazon book page, the most recently added cover is what will show on the Amazon page.
      2) NO - none - Amazon member submitted covers will be used by Shelfari. (Those covers must be added directly to Shelfari to be a selection possible for Shelfari members.)
      3) When the "official" cover is altered on Amazon based on a validated request from an Amazon member or by an official person such as the author or publisher, Amazon will make the decision whether to alter the cover. The actual change of the cover (on the "official" edition - not the list of covers available for display on that page) may take up to 24 hours and Amazon will send the requester an email validating that the requested change has been accepted.
      4) About 24 hour or so AFTER the change HAS been implemented on Amazon, it usually appears for that edition on Shelfari.
      5) Caveat: As you may have noticed, there are (possibly) 1000s of Shelfari books that are showing blank or default-blue covers on Shelfari at the moment. A delay in moving changes approved by Amazon may also be a casualty of whatever weirdness is going on with your book.
      6) IMPORTANT - the cover displayed on the Shelfari page will be the cover associated with the specific edition chosen by the most Shelfari members who have that book on their shelves. It is a popularity contest, so to speak. If an "old" cover (I know this isn't your specific issue but thought this might be of interest to you) happens to be associated with that "most popular" edition, then it is not recommended that it be changed. (We don't really want to alter history here.)

    DL I understand you may be offline, but if you are there, I'm not sure what is going on. Every time I log on to Amazon Kindle the correct cover shows: pen & ink drawing of trees. Every time I look at Shelfari, I see the banner on a white background, an incorrect image. The file at the publisher is correct, pen & ink drawing of trees.

    DL speaks of delays and lag times,after changes. I MADE NO CHANGES, SHELFARI HAD THE CORRECT IMAGE FOR WEEKS & DOES NOT NOW !!!
    (at least not on my shelf)

    Your help was/is appreciated DL. I'm just saying: there was an inference that the problem is because of something I did, and that is just not true.

    The KINDLE file image, and Shelfari image have been consistent for weeks, and then I logged on Monday to find an old, briefly used image pop up on Shelfari.

    It is important because it effects marketing. We market one particular image with each edition (paperback and KINDLE). Different images can confuse customers and hurt sales. It is an IMPORTANT ISSUE!

    DL's explanations are fine, but do not seem to apply to this case. We've made no changes.

      Ditto on that. Somehow the recent changes made, have created a need to have the search information one puts in be absolutely accurate, including no commas, or it must include all of the detritus that went along with just the title, like the title twice, and publishing dates and on and on. Even an advanced search will not get you to the book. Until you start creating a book and enter it, and like magic the book appears, already in the system, but impossible to get to initially.

      I do not seem to have any search problems. The one thing is this book cover suddenly switching from the correct one to an old barely used one.
      That old one is not associated in any way with the book now, but it popped up (for the KINDLE version) on my shelf.

    The correct cover has appeared magically or with some editor's or librarian's help. Apologies to folks last Friday (I believe) for replying back and forth in a new box each time. I was multitasking and the other task was heavy labor. I was doing good just to find the comment box each time I came in to check the conversation. Thanks to all who offered ideas. My point of contention is still a fact: that I had done no updates, therefore the problem could not have been caused by me. so there must be some type of glitch that should be addressed.

    I have gotten 14 emails today, each reporting the exact same update to a book extra I wrote. I had to uncheck the notification, as I could not stand it any longer. Its only one extra I wrote, and its the same change reported each time, so I do not believe it is someone making 14 changes today.

      You're not alone. It happens to all of us lately, very irregularly. It clears up for a while and then it starts doing it again. For me the real fun is when it broings up a list of books, then when I go to combine to duplicates I'm informed that there are no results for the search I just did.

    After two weeks, the search function is still broken. It's actually gotten worse. I first noticed the issue about two weeks ago, when I would search for books and find no results - even searching for books like 'Moby Dick' or 'Great Expectations.' At that point I discovered that re-clicking the search button several times would usually yield me some results. Now it's gotten to the point where I have to use external search engines to find links to books on Shelfari. I have tried to use the search function with Safari, Chrome, and Firefox and the results are the same. I would think that such a crucial feature as the search function would have been fixed, or at least addressed by Shelfari staff, by now.

    Well it has probably been over a year since I had a need to report my frustration. But obviously you all have seen fit to change something and it is a real pain in the ..... I now have a plethora of black boxes for the books on my shelf of 7800+ books, and my need for order is going to mean hours of fixing them so I know what in the H...the books are when I look at my shelves. How did you manage it? I've probably got a bigger problem than that as the dust covers showing probably do not represent the true editions that I have.

    Second when I go to make the change (hopefully back to what was accurate), there is sometimes nothing to choose from but a black box, or a blue generic one. I have never understood why the first edition is not the first, and showing option, or at least the hardcover or paperback that is most often the one a person has. NOT A BLACK BOX WITH NO INDICATION WHAT THE BOOK IS AT ALL. OR A BLUE BOX WITH THE MOST RIDICULOUS NOTATION ON IT, GOING ON FOREVER, REPEATING THE TITLE AND THE DATE PUBLISHED AND OTHER INFORMATION UNRELATED TO THE TITLE.

    Now I am gettinga email notifications of the same three "NOTES" over and over again. I think that should be relatively easy to fix. Once I get one email, that is sufficient.

    The site has also done what it has in the past when a major change is made...it is SLOW, SLOW, SLOW: to load initially, to move from one page to another, to go from books back to HOME...............

    Given the number of books that I have I will probably never be able without starting at the beginning to know if the edition that is showing on my shelves as a dustcover is, in fact, the one I originally chose. And given how anal I am about the most accurate I can be it is annoying. I can only thank the gods that I am so anal that I have made a detailed description on details.

    I DO WISH, HOWEVER, THAT YOU COULD TEST OUT A CHANGE BEFORE IT MUCKS UP AN ENTIRE FEATURE.

    As I read other postings here I also was reminded that the search function is no existent on a large number of books. Because of outside distractions I had not added a large number of books for some time. So obviously this problem (from other members) has been going on for awhile. I have to go through every step possible before it shows up as I end up creating a book. It doesn't happen on all of the searches that I have done, and I added over 50 books. But it also wasn't on just a couple.

    I, too, seem to be having problems with the search engine. Then when I try to "create" a book, all of a sudden there it is. This is getting ridiculous. I also notice problems with book covers "disappearing" and leaving a generic black cover with white titles. From reading the posts here, there does not seem to be to much of an effort on fixing these problems. I just joined "Goodreads", and although I loved Shelfari since the day I joined, the problems just seem to be getting worse and not worth the effort it takes to stay here for much longer. Wen I first joined this site I never had any problems with it, now the updates are messing everything up! Goodreads might just become my new favorite book site.

      I had started with goodreads because shelfari was so slow...think I'll go there if I want to participate in this kind of thing...
      I'd love to as I'm such an avid reader and would like to pass on my experiences.

      Also just found booklending.com for kindle books...which seems to work ok...except for THOSE publishers. Please particpate if you do kindle books. I'm sure more lenders can only help.

      I don't know if this will help, but in terms of the search engine, I am finding that Shelfari cannot find things if I do not leave a space after my last word. It does better if I put in a space.

      Edit: So much for that hypothesis. Still not working, to find books and authors I am sure are in the system. aargh.

    like everyone else, Your SEARCH function isn't working. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Mostly it doesn't. We're talking about books that ARE in the system that are not coming up.

      This may not be the only trouble, but trial and error seems to have shown me that the search engine requires a space at the end of the thing you are looking for. That probably won't fix everything, but it seems to be making my searches much less likely to fail.

      Edit: Oops! So much for that idea. It's not working today. alas.

    The other thing that is not working is the page count. I don't particularly care about counting pages anymore, though I kept a pen and ink tally of this as a teenager. But it is irritating to see "You have read 68 books, which is approximately 968 pages." The page count seems not to change however many books I add. But I guess no one is out there.

      The page count is a member-entered data point. On the detail page of each book, under First Edition, you can enter the page count for the book.

      If no one has done that, the counter can't update for that book on your pages read total. You can see which of your "read" books ismissing that data by using the "show" link at the bottom of your Estimated Pages Read graph on the "Your Reading Stats" display.

      Thanks for responding. I think that my bigger problem is that I have to say what year I read a book for them to count it.

      But there are two books that they tell me that they don't have page counts for. There's only one edition of the one book. They list the page number in the book info. How do I make them look at that (or add it elsewhere)? I am looking at Strange Case of Mr. Bodkin & Father Whitechapel.

      Two things:

      1) give me the URL that displays from your stats page of the book using that "show" link.

      2) give me the URL of the book from your "read" shelf.

      Yes - you must have a date read for those stats to be counted and those stats will be counted FOR the year you entered.

      So ... If you are looking at "pages read" for THIS year, the data entered for another year will not appear on that display.

      I believe (but haven't done this) that you can set up a pages-read goal that doesn't limit the stat to any specific year. The reading goals are shown on a different page than are the reading stats.

    Hello,

    I really like the Shelfari link to my books on Amazon. I wanted to add a recent link to a live (recorded) radio interview, about one of my books: Shrouded in Mist: Physics and the Archaic Symbology of Metaphysics. The only place I could find to post it was "Discussion." With that said; I started to look around and went to tags.

    Problem or (Bug). The tags for the above book (Eastern Mysticism), had listed my tags, for my other books on American History. Not relevant at all. I've looked but can't find a way to edit or remove the American History tags, from my book on Eastern Mysticism. When I went back, the tags are now strewn together.

    Is there a solution to this? Thank you in advance.

    I don't see any American History tags associated with this book, the tags it shows are :

    egypt, esoteric, esoteric poetry, eyewitness, ghost, history, india, initiation, kabala, metaphysics, mysticism, philosophy, physics, qabala, re-possessing, religion, removing haunts, sacred mysteries, science, short story, souls returning, spirits, surviving death

    No American History tags there... I am wondering if you were seeing your personal list of tags used on the edit tags page?

    To add or edit the tags you personally have associated with a book on your book shelf, the Edit dialog Tags tab presents you with a input box in which to put the tags you want for your (personal shelf) record of the book. Below that input box will be a list of either or both "suggested tags" that other people have used for that book, or "your tags" which is a list of all the tags you've ever used on any books on your bookshelf.

    You cannot edit or remove tags someone else associates to the book - only your own personal tags for the books on your personal bookshelf here on Shelfari.

    The list of suggested tags/your tags are not associated to the book unless you select them in which case they then appear in the input box above. (You can also type 'new' tag words into that input box, you don't have to select from a list.)

    I am just finding that the book covers of newly published books that I have just added are gong to generic covers overnite. I put them in with the appropriate cover and they change to the generic without any input from me. I am having to redo over and over. What is going on? And why are there no answers coming from the staff? Why have a place to put up problems when there is no response?

    This has been a constant complaint in all the years that I have been on Shelfari.

    I am also having problems with the tags feature. I put in a number of tags, and when I return (when I realized I left one out) not all of the tags I put in are there, and I have to add them again.

    What a positively ridiculous mess this site is becoming. I just went on to see if more of my books covers were turning into generic or black faces. I had added Trickster's Point by William Kent Krueger, only a few days ago. A newly published book. I put in the new dust cover. It had reverted to a generic, and there was no longer a new cover even available with that option I had chosen. Now there was one generic cover, no author noted. The other (3) three editions were plain blue covers, no title, not author showing on the cover.

    There was another option that was the original dust cover, so I switched, which also entailed putting my status, edition, tags, etc.

    Is there not someone there who knows how to fix this continuing muck up?

    Since Shelfari seems rarely to heed either complaint or issue, why bother to read this thread.

    Shelfari chooses to stay back years ago in technical snazz - but I will remain on the site for the good recommendations and reviews by users. Why, however, commiserate with frustrations from lack of interest in the Shelfari technical staff, if there is such a staff. So, see you in other groups.

    I've wondered if my disappearing cover issue is related to the fact that I have not 'joined' my Shelfari account with my Amazon account. I sent them a note a few days ago, but like my book covers, it seems to have just gone off into thin air.

    I use Shelfari as my back up book journal. I think I'm just going to spend a bit of time everyday and move my 2900 books over to Goodreads. This site should bring enjoyment to readers, not irritation.

      Amazon just keeps kissing me off with the same rote replies...and fixes nothing. I will probably just enter recent reads for awhile and maybe start checking out goodreads. My hopes of what this site could provide are gone along with wishes to share info and help a decent interested community. I wish I didn't have to get ebooks thru Amazon and could just tell them to totally stuff it...

    I joined Shelfari after Goodreads. The reason I joined here is because I can get ALL my books on here (mainly the KDP free books) because Goodreads has generic covers if anything at all about those books. This is just a FYI if you do have alot of self published Kindle books from the KDP program and the editions have no printed version, Goodreads will NOT have the books on their site 80% of the time. The ones that eventually get on Goodreads are from the kindly Librarians that add them to the site if they get around to them.

    So in that vein, I'm keeping Shelfari and only updating Goodreads like normal because for some reason Goodreads will not import my books (I keep getting the dreaded "Goodreads is took to long to answer" page). So Shelfari over 6,000 books vs Goodreads 1790 books, and I have to manually put those others in if I want to transfer (which is a royal pain).

    Plus I like my groups and the group structure here than over there (very cumbersome and if you reply to a post you might (might) be on page 3 and the post you replied to will be on page 1).

    So come on Shelfari get it together.

      I love Shelfari. I was just getting frustrated reading that people were jumping ship. If you read my note it was in support. I was telling my experience with Goodreads and Kindle. Also their site goes down quite a bit.

    I don't know if this has been an issue yet, but longer threads "split" when scrolling down iPad now... It's hard to explain, but it's like the thread splits and tiles. This just started, and I've been updated to iOS6 for awhile now, so that's not my issue.

      No question it's a problem. I don't recommend starting new books in this situation, because that just leads to multiple entries that have to be combined later. Sometimes I do better with advanced search and putting in the ISBN.

      It's there, the search engine is glitched.

      I searched and added 4 books today using the ISBN numbers and the books popped right up. I was going through my shelves again today looking for "missing" covers and frankly I thought there were few of them and that the shelves were loading much faster than anytime in the past. I don't know if it matters but I use Firefox.

      If I'm lucky I can hit on brief periods during which the site works fine too, but today not even the ISBN search would work, and I would have to refresh my page to get my shelf to load. My shelf also has a lot of books missing covers, and I gave up on adding them back since other books would inevitably lose their covers as well.

      Something you might try that works for me occasionally is to just enter the authors name and then search for his various titles when the page listing all his books comes up. Also, make sure you use caps where called for like "Philip K. Dick instead of philip k dick. Good Luck!

      For me, the problem is that it is unreliable. Having a reliable search function, and reliably be able to see the covers of the books on my shelf seem like basics for a site like this.

      I've been on the site for over a year and until a month or so ago these were not problems. I don't understand why they can't go back to what they had, which was working better.

    Hello... Please help me... I have two problems in Shelfari that I thought are a just a little hitch that will move on but now they are annoying the crap out of me... First the book edition photos!! What's up with that... I'm very picky and particular about my book covers and edition but now every time I open my shelf I see my books with no covers, only to discover that the covers were removed!!

    My second issue is the word search optimization, I no longer can search for anything here!! Every time I search for a book or an author I get that there is no such a book which is ridiculous because I know there is...

    HELP!!!

      Hi Dana,

      These are both problems that have been plaguing all of Shelfari for what seems like months now. The covers aren't actually being removed, but are just glitching in their display. They will reappear on their own and do not need to be re-uploaded.

      As for the search feature, this too is something that comes and goes. So far the only thing we've been told is that the Shelfari team is aware of the problems and are working on them. :/

    For the last couple weeks, whenever I try and search for a book or an author--even if it is a well-known/popular title or person--Shelfari says there are no matches for my search. Sometimes it works, but the majority of the time it doesn't. I've tried going on it through my phone and that doesn't work either. I was trying to look up some book descriptions the other day and I was forced to use GoodReads because of it--and I don't like GR. Any assistance with this problem would be great.

      Its been a widely reported defect, and it is known by the Shelfari team. It doesn't look like they have found a fix as of yet.

      The only thing that I have found to work is multiple presses of the search bar. Eventually something will come up, or if I wait a few minutes...

      Stupid, but I had problems last night though I hadn't usually but I was persistent. Try an author search if you can't get a title...and then pick out what you want. Also, for some strange reason, often adding a space after what you enter will get you results?? Someone mentioned this and it seemed to work.

    I am unable to get the Edit button to work for books already on my shelf or new books that I wish to add. The arrow to the right works so I can say whether book is to be read, is being read, or already read. I have tried off and logging back in and it doesn't help. This has been going on for about a week. Also my goal does not update either. It is stuck just like the edit button

      Sorry, but I'm PO'd. I sent Amazon (the root of our problems) a scathing email re: problems with what I believe is my latest kindle update...and they called me at after 1AM and woke me up. They could look up my phone number but not my location and consider the time? Then I was on hold...and when someone finally came on, they asked me how they could help. I proceeded to very rudely tell her, "You called me! At 1AM."

      If it took us this long to do some job we'd be fired...which sounds like a dandy idea to me...

    I am now curious, after some thought and some other current issues related to Amazon. I am far from a computer geek but...

    I've been experiencing lots of Risky Connection Blocked warnings from my McAfee. Most of them have been occurring at Booklending.com, but I've also had some here...and at other random times. Booklending is ALSO an Amazon site. Reports of this problem are being reported all over the internet...and angering many. It's an open and notorious issue. All of the IPs sited by McAfee are...Amazon! It appears to be 'hosting.' I'm not so sure, but...

    Booklending can't keep my picture up for very long...it disappears, just like our book covers! I finally deleted it. Complaints reveal that the pic is HOSTED by Amazon....as I assume the book covers and other info here at Shelfari are too. Booklending is also slow as molasses, just like Shelfari. So it seems to me that Amazon has made a change in their 'hosting?' that's driving virusscans nuts...and making things disappear and not work? Or at least, not consistently 'host' the info. And if everyone is blocking stuff...? Booklending also gave me a site that had some fixes, neither of which worked...and then told me how to add Amazon to my Trusted Sites! I replied that, considering all the BS that's going on with Amazon, frankly, I DON'T trust them. But I'm almost tempted to see if I do that, maybe my book covers would come back? But I cringe at the thought they're trying to install something to track me or whatever. Their behavior seems threatening.

    I've complained often about lots of things, on the phone and emails, including all this and the fact that my new kindle update almost seems to be creating more format issues like lots of weird spacing and disabling of typeface selections...but maybe that's just authors that don't format correctly. Anyway, all I get is "I'm so sorry" and NO real help or answers.

    Anyone have any thoughts on all that?

      I noticed the same McAfee issues with e-newsletters from bookreporter.com The IP address was associated with a domain out of Seattle, although the headquarters for bookreporter.com is in New York.

      I also wondered if bookreporter was using amazon servers.

      To the bookreporter question: Most likely, no.

      For the other one, the McAfee Communities forum:

      That IP address is one of the IP's amazonaws uses, the problem is currently millions of different webpages use it to track information of people who visit their site and also use it to direct advertisements to those same people the problem is currently macafee is blocking alot of these IP's because its thinking they are all risky because of a single bad file was loaded on an advertisement on many sites.

      Many games use the amazonaws to track visits and now this current issue is causing most games to break the ones that do use it. The only issue currently is maybe to add amazonaws.com to the netguard allow list because mcafee is being over zealous on its blocking breaking thousands of sites.

      Remember tho if you do add it then netguard will not catch actual problem sites that also use amazonaws so its up to you.

      This is an ongoing issue with no end in sight because if you look for the amazonaws posts on the forums it keeps going on and on.

      Additionally, it appears that the IP address is from a company in Florida. As well as the gaming server, if you've used Skype it might have also added as well. It appears that McAfee has a glitch where the IP is so similar it's telling you it's all of these Amazon tracking sites.

    What is going on with the search? It isn't finding anything I am looking for at all. It is always telling me to make sure that I am spelling it right even when I get a pop up and click on it to search. Then sometimes I have to search the same thing 3-4 times and it will finally pull it up. It can't be just my computer because it happens on my work comuter too. If this keeps up I am going to have to change to goodreads and I don't want too. Help!~

    Something funny.. I just got the new Paperwhite Kindle and noticed that isn't a link to Shelfari programed into it. That plus all the other issues people have been having kind of leads me to believe that amazon might just be doing away with Shelfari. Goodreads has always done better but Shelfari is still widely used..ugh

      Yeah, as I've said elsewhere in this group, I kind of suspected they were letting Shelfari die a slow death. My guess is that it doesn't bring them enough money to be worth investing in, so they're not investing what they would need to keep the site operational.

      Of course this is pure speculation on my part. I'd REALLY like to be wrong about this.

      I have to agree. Sadly it looks like amazon is letting Shelfari go. If you search Shelfari on amazon it brings up the Goodreads app...ugh Now to move 300 + books to goodreads or another site. I don't even like goodreads :(

      I also have an account with Library Thing. There are things I like better about it than Shelfari, mainly the algorithm they have for helping you find readers with similar libraries. I think the groups at Shelfari are better, however, and I'll miss them if the site is shut down or fizzles away.

      For Kindle books with the minimum number (I don't know what that magic number is) of edits/info on the Shelfari page for that book, any Kindle device can display the "book extras." Go to the "Book Description" on the device.

      However, for the eInk devices - the experimental web browser does not have a default web book mark for Shelfari. I do not know why it should. If you use the google bookmark from the device, you can get to Shelfari but the display is so small it really isn't much worth the effort. After all, the eInk devices are for reading - they are not designed nor intended to provide general web use.

      Account Settings ] Click the 'Shelf' tag ] Click 'Download a list of your books' ] Save As (Save to desktop or another place that you can find easily)

      After the download is complete ] Right click on the file ] Scoll down to properties ] Change to open with notepad (.txt)

      Open excel ] click the 'data' tab ] Click on from text

      Now it will convert the file for you.

      From there you can import to either Goodreads or Library Thing. I put mine into Goodreads because it has an app for my phone and work with the Calibre program. I use to catalog my books. If you need more help friend me.

    I'm in a group called Role Play with me? ||A one-on-one style RPG||. The group is still on Shelfari, but it won't show up under my groups or the groups of other members. The only way to access the group is to check your email (if you get group notifications) and to click on the title in the body of the email. Why won't it show up under people's groups?

      Are you talking about your home page or your groups list page?

      On the home page you select whether to show all your groups (most recently active first), those groups for which you are an admin, and those groups in which you are a member but not an admin. You can show the "groups" page. All will appear there.

      Does this specific group not even show on the groups page for you?

      Have you been, perhaps, accidentally (by Shelfari or an admin or action on your part) removed from the group? (You shouldn't see email about the group if so but thought I would ask anyway. It may be that you are using old emails or something.)

      Just stuff to think about should Shelfari ask you for more info.

    Not that this matters one little bit...but I just ranted again, this time via chat, with someone at Amazon. I pointed out that we're darn tired of waiting for whoever it is (apparently the head of Amazon's brother-in-law who really needed a job, even though he knows nothing about books or computers or anything relevant) to "fix it." I also mentioned that we now get no response regarding any complaint of ANY "bug" and if they're just letting us agonize over something we love on it's deathbed, gasping for some semblance of it's former life, then they need to publish that here via one of the "help" here...that aren't helping.

    Just let us know and end the BS. If they don't care and are basically done with it...it's unfixable...or whatever...just say so.

    He, of course, said he'd report it to his supervisors....groan. And also proceeded to tell me...oh, my God, what a surprise (NOT)...that my 7th kindle (a good idea lost in translation) is NOT working properly. Now I have to do a factory reset, requiring hours of redownloading ALL my titles (after spending quite some time creating a list) and getting the thing "back"...something I've already spent HOURS doing at least 5 times with the other 6 pieces of...

    You know what...Amazon no longer works properly...and also hasn't for some time...just like their devices and affiliate websites. Not to mention their causing "risky connection blocked" messages constantly...
    Sorry, but this is ridiculous...another fine example of corporate greed and irresponsibility.

    I've been having this problem for about a week now where I put in a title of a book (one I know is in the database) and it comes up with no results, but if I go back 10-15 minutes later it will be there. I check and it's happening on both Firefox and Chrome. Is this happening for anyone else?

      I have the same problem. I find if you s-l-o-w-l-y type in the book title and let the search "find" it and pop down the list and select it you can sometimes get the page to load.

    Not sure if anyone else is having this issue (because while I scrolled through the other posts here, I didn't take the time to read each and every one), but I have intermittent issues with the search function. When trying to add a book or change a status, I simply type in the authors name or book title to bring up what I want. More and more frequently, my searches come back as unfindable. These "could not find" responses are even more puzzling because as I'm typing the name of the author or book, what I seek will show up automatically below the search box (in blue text) as I'm typing. When I click on one of those automatic responses, the search will still come back as "could not find". My spelling is correct, the titles are accurate and the books are, more often than not, quite popular. It's very frustrating because no matter what I type, the search will always come back unfindable; as if the search function simply failed all together. In those instances, I could type "Harry Potter" and nothing would be found.

    I have a MacBook Pro, OS X version 10.8.2 software and, of course, I use Safari (in case that's relevant).

      The search function fails occasinally, true, but has anyone noticed that it doesn't seem to work at all with non-Amazon books? I've added a couple of books to Shelfari which I purchased from Smashwords, Amazon doesn't have them. When I search for those books, nothing comes up, no matter how many times I try. I wonder if it's always been so, that you can only search for books listed on Amazon?

      Shelfari IS Amazon's catalog - amazon.com, not amazon.com. (country) . Shelfari is owned by Amazon.com .

      If the book is actually published (English) though (Smashwords is self-publishing), then it will be on Amazon.

      Find the title on Amazon and, then, using the ASIN search on Shelfari for it. (The Shelfari Search function is currently so screwed up!)

      If it isn't actually on the site, at the end of the search list you'll see "create a book." Note: Member created books are not searchable. They will appear only on your shelf, the authors list of books (assuming you correctly link the author name when you create the book), and on any list/series record where you might put that book. When you create a book, it will default to your shelf with "read" status. The URL for the book will have the bookid which you can use, if needed, to add the book to a series/list record.

      Are you sure that you have added all the read dates to the books you have read this year?

      The last three you have read (Seduced by Moonlight on Nov 11, A Caress of Twilight on Nov 4, and Divine Misdemeanors on October 30) are counting to your total books read as you can see here

      Very weird. Apparently it didn't save three of those dates read--like Dark Monk, but it's fixed itself. Let's just hope it keeps that saved now....

      On a side note, some of the ones I'm updating don't want to change off of I'm Reading Now. x-x

      Those status indicators are independent toggle switches. You have to check/uncheck each status separately. (You can have the same title concurrently as "read", "plan to read" , and "read.")

      Just to clarify:

      You have a book marked as "read". You wish to unmark it? You click on that "read" indicator and that indicator doesn't uncheck?

      Is that what you mean?

      Want to ensure, for example, that you understand that marking that book as "plan to read" has NO effect on the "read" indicator. Those check marks are managed independently of each other.

      I'm having all kinds of problems with the site. The other day, I got NOTHING...no site at all! I wonder if their servers are just not handling things...that they have removed some of their 'space?' (not a techie) in what appears to be their attempts to basically abandon any dedication to this site. Booklending.com is almost as bad. It takes forever to load and nothing really works right.

      Lately I've found that one may have to abandon an attempt to do something if it keeps balking. I usually try 5 or 6 times for search when it's balky...then give up for awhile. It usually comes back sometime or another. Very frustrating...and I'm about ready to do something else because Amazon refuses to acknowledge or solve the issues. And now they're even screwing up Amazon. If you kindle...have you noticed your 'loans' link in the dropdown list on your manage my kindle page is gone? I'm PO'd! And I've told them. I need that to monitor my loans without having to search for each individually.

      They 'fixed'/changed the website...that's their answer...

      Wish I could abandon THEM...and not care...

      I just went to booklending.com and noticed something. That site seems to have 'missing' book covers too. But if I wait for awhile and scroll up and down...voila, there they are.

      Unfortunately, playing the same way with shelfari doesn't seem to work... But they are both so miserably slow, it's beyond annoying...

      And though it's not related, can someone msg me or tell me what exactly is meant by adding facts to your books? I've contributed some stuff but that item under "your profile is ?% complete" never gets completed. So, what do I need to add and where? Not that it matters much...

      Thanks...and please consider lending/borrowing at booklending if you don't.

      you need 20 edits for that part to be completed. Not many.... Whether you combine books, edit their title or add details to the book page (ie characters, first edition details etc) or set the edition language sets...

      Also once you follow 15 people (I think) that section will be completed too. I believe you can unfollow people after that and the section will still remain complete...

    Hey, it's been a while since I've been on here, so I was just wondering if anyone else is having the same problems as I'm having.

    1. When I try to edit a book I've been reading, it won't let me open it to edit. It's really frustrating.

    2. When I click the down arrow on a book, it won't open or let me change a book I've been reading to one I've finished.

    4. Most of the time my bookshelf won't even load!

    3. Most of the books on my shelf don't even have the display to edit or the down arrow. It is really hard to get anything done on my shelfari account and I hope someone can help me.

      This is happening to lots of us and has been the subject of many comments in this forum over the last few months. There has been no response from Shelfari/Amazon as to when, if ever, this will return to normal. I have found that sometimes the covers randomly reappear and others disappear just as randomly. I've given up changing or fixing them because the problem just recurs.

      Basically, the cover display on our shelves, like the search function, is unreliable. The groups still seem to be functioning, which is what keeps me here at all.

      I have just reported this myself, but now that I've read the comments you guys have posted, I'm wondering if this will EVER be fixed.... I have uploaded my favorites shelf to my book blog, and it's very frustrating to see book covers randomly disappear from it!! I have tried to fix the problem myself by removing the edition with the ugly generic cover, and adding the actual cover of the book, but this is not working. I have also tried uploading a cover from my PC, to no avail. What's going on with the Shelfari/Amazon team?!

      Normally, if an export takes longer than 2 hours, I will stop it and restart and it will work.

      I've tried that for the last few days.

      Nothin'.

      Today, I gave up with my 2nd attempt ran for over SIX HOURS without producing the file.

      I am mostly using Shelfari currently to showcase my own recent novels. Therefore, I haven't had all of these problems yet, but have noticed covers disappearing. Since Shelfari is owned by Amazon, which I find to be "top drawer," why hasn't Amazon gotten on top of this?

    I appointed a 2nd administrator to our group, Discovering Undiscovered Authors. So now there are two of us. The bookshelf is set for administrators only, but it won't let the 2nd administrator add any books to the shelf.

    Not sure if this is the right place to report this, but for the last few weeks I have not been able to search for books. Every time I type in the title or the author I get a message that says the book can't be found and I should create a listing for it. This happens every time, for books that are already on shelfari. I'm not the only person this has happened to as well.

      It's been happening to lots of us for weeks. It has been the subject of many discussions in this group. The silence from Shelfari/Amazon has been deafening. I agree with droonfang about the state of things here.

      I stay here for the groups and have given up hope of having this problem, or the disappearing covers, fixed. I have a back-up account at Library Thing, in anticipation of the day when Shelfari folds altogether. A site like this without a working search function has a limited lifespan.

    Just about every time I search for a book or author, I can even click on the correct title or name is a drop down list, it tells me that there is nothing listed for that book or author. I know this isn't true. It used to happen rarely now it happens all the time. It's very frustrating. Sometime I have to try and find that author in a book I've already read just to find the one book I'm looking for.

      Ellen it does that to me too and I've found if I close out of Shelfari and then reopen it seems to help. Shouldn't have to but it seems to work.

      That's been happening to lots of folks for weeks (months?) now. As I've said elsewhere, my guess is that Amazon has decided that Shelfari is not worth maintaining and they are letting it die a slow and painful (to us, not them) death. I can't think of any other reason why they would let these problems persist and ignore the many questions from users.

      They're figuring out that no one uses the x ray feature on kindle, that was really the only thing Shelfari was contributing to their precious empire so they're done with us.

      It would be just dumb for amazon to let shelfari die a slow death. It's good advertising. I know I buy more from amazon since I joined shelfari.
      A bookseller (as well as everything else) and a book fan site, seems like a great idea to me.

      I agree...I buy or borrow or read more. And this is an outlet for me to allow others to share in my opinions of all the stuff I read. And I've read so many...I could try to catch up, but with Shelfari performing as it is, it's impossible! I tried to edit a book last night and just got stuck with the disgusting "swirly" with nothing happening.

      One thing I have noted with the search issue...yes, it often doesn't work. Sometimes if you put a space at the end, with either the title or the author, it will get you something. But even better is the advanced search function...fill in title, author and, hmm not sure, cover? type?...like kindle for instance. Sometimes you have to wait a bit, then click again. It usually only takes at most 5 wait/clicks to get something.

      I think I'm going to try appealing to Amazon thru planetfeedback.com. I have gotten some results using that contact method. They send a letter for you. Or I'm going to keep trying to find someone who can answer the $64,000 question...is Amazon abandoning Shelfari? Or are they just instituting the practice of hiring zombies...as in braindead? We'd all be fired if we performed this badly...and, sadly, it's becoming widespread at Amazon...even at the main website.

      Or maybe someone here knows someone who can create a website like this for those of us addicted to it...

      Well, there are lots of other websites like Shelfari. The thing is that Shelfari has much better design than all of them, and that if I wanted to migrate to somewhere else, all of my book reviews and non-commerical books that I especially added to my shelf would be lost.

    I just tried to remove a book from my wishlist and add it to my owned list and adding it to my owned list worked, but the wishlist present button keeps resetting after I un-click it. I even tried going to the list view and un-checking the wishlist field, but after it saved, the checks under wishlist were back again.

      That happens to me all the time. I find that after I've tried to uncheck the wish list button a couple of times, if I just leave it for a day or so, it usually disappears on its own

      They screwed up that feature awhile ago so I don't use it anymore. It use to be if I bought a book from my wishlist on Amazon it would automatically take it off my wishlist here on Shelfari (remove the present icon and put in that I own it). After 2 months it stopped doing that so I had to go and undo all the ones on my wishlist here because it became confusing.

    I'm having trouble with the book, THAT WHICH DIVIDES, by Dayton Ward. It's a Star Trek (The Original Series) novel. I've tried and tried, but for some reason, I just can't get the cover of the book to display on my shelf. Instead, I keep getting the ugly generic gray cover with the title on it. I've tried removing the book, then choosing the mass market paperback edition, which shows the starship Enterprise being attacked by a Romulan starship...to no avail!! When I go back to my shelf, I keep seeing the same old generic cover. I've even tried uploading the cover from my computer. NOTHING works!! HELP!!!!!

    I'm having trouble with another book on my shelves -- SPIRITUAL CLEARINGS, a nonfiction metaphysical book. I have tried to change the generic gray cover which is displaying on my shelves, and can't, for some reason. I've tried removing the book, choosing my covers, uploading covers from my PC, just as I did with the Star Trek novel I've alrady mentioned -- nothing works. Please help!! Thanks!!

      I suspect the first thing Amanda will ask is, "What browser are you using?"

      Re the baked goods: If I were either of you, I would both remove the Shelfari cookies and flush cache. (It is a good technique to occasionally clear all cookies and flush the cache anyway - these things pileup and can get messed up!)

      Well that is your 1st mistake! LOL! (Ignore me - I've hated IE since it was the only browser around. Show how old I am.)

      Anyway - I have IEv9. Because I never use it, I had to scan around the features. Don't see the same kind of cookie management granularity that other browsers allow so I just looked up the IE help site.

      Thanks, DL, I hope it works. I have problems on my computer (or maybe in my brain) for Firefox, which is why I use IE. I don't particularly like it, but I seem to have less problems on IE than with Firefox. Might just be me. I did what Microsoft suggests for Windows 7 and we'll see what happens. Did have to sign into Shelfari again right after I fixed (?) it.

      I agree that it's a good idea to periodically clear cookies, and we DO do that. But what I meant by my earlier comment is that we have not done so in the last three days, when the problem with being asked to re-log-in started.

      Oh, and I use IE at work (no choice) and Firefox at home. Happened on both ...

      Seems to be working just fine now.

      I have had to sign in everyday for the last 4 days!! My settings are already to clear cookies, so why am I having to do this everytime I want to reply?? Once I am signed in, it lasts for the night, then when I set the computer to hibernate, I have to sign in the next day when I re-log on?????

      It's part of your browser settings. Shelfari could have changed their cookies a bit, but go through your most used browser to not clear cookies at least from shelfari/amazon if you're tired of logging in.

      Except for the comments on cookies, I've stayed out of this because I have never - under any browser or with any of my Shelfari names - been able to "stay signed on" once I turn off the computer and/or let it sleep.

      Is this what you guys are saying you were able to do and now can not?

      Okay...weird. I NEVER have to sign in. To Shelfari, Booklending, Hotmail (unless I haven't in a long time). I DO have to sign in at Amazon, but I have it saved so it's fairly auto.
      If I can help, I'd be happy to try.
      And I rarely clear my cookies. It just deletes all your info. I'm not sure why everyone's anal about them...
      For one thing, make sure you check the box to keep you signed in to a site if they offer it. That's if you're not sorried about someone using your puter as you...I don't have that concern.

      And DL...this works after sleep, shutdown, which I do every night, etc.

    If you do a search on Shelfari for Our lady of the ruins, you get a record which is clearly erroneous: the result page has the cover and description of that book but is headed by the author and title of a totally different book.

    I Can't get the "export your books" link to work. I click on it, and it looks like it's working. . . but nothing ever happens. How long should I wait? I have a rather large shelf - over 7800 books, is this the problem? Should I log out and log back in, should I try another browser? I use Chrome most of the time. Any help would be appreciated.

    Sorry if this question shows up twice -- I thought I posted it before but then couldn't find the resulting post.

    I added and rated a book by mistake (Cleave by Nicholas Johnson http://www.shelfari.com/books/8990715/Cleave?uid=jcorelis). I followed the instructions for removing it (" To remove a book from your shelf click the "EDIT" button and then click the "Remove from shelf" button on the My Status tab of the Edit pop-up. ") but the book is still on my shelf with the rating, with the ADD button rather than the EDIT button. I reloaded that page and it's still there. I waited until the next day and did all that over again and it's still there. Can someone please tell me how to remove it?javascript:{}

    Thanks for looking. I just checked again and yes, it's still on my shelf as described. But some further experiment indicates that I only see it when I'm logged in. So I guess in practice it doesn't matter, as long as other people can't see it, though it seems technically to be a bug if I can see it when logged in.

      When you press the EDIT button does a pop-up appear? Have you perhaps got a pop-up blocker installed?

      What browser are you using? If you use another browser does the same thing occur?

      Check your settings again? I too am using Safari for Mac and have no problem. Maybe you could take a screenshot and show others what you are seeing?       Did you recently download an antivirus from the Mac App Store? iAntivrius has a known issue with the Shelfari Edit button for whatever reason I can't fathom.

    I am experiencing an issue when I log in with my laptop. Any menu or button that has a drop down menu is misaligned. The Drop down button is moved over almost an inch into the center of the button this means I cannot click the button this happens to my profile, books, and community buttons at the top and when I try to edit any book.

    This is happening on my laptop but my desktop does not have this issue and they both are using Google chrome for the browser. Screen shots below.

    New to Shelfari and I like it, only I wish there were an iPad app. I downloaded about 200 books to my shelf the first day without difficulty, but I can NOT share on Facebook or search for friends on Facebook. Is this a mobile device issue? I get the message to disable my pop-up blocker . I have done that, logged in and out multiple times, but still get nowhere. I may be reporting this in the wrong location, but it would be very tedious to have to read through hundreds of pages to find a thread related to this.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

      I'm not going to say anything about the actual content of your post since I'm not the right person, however as far as reading a bunch of posts--on either the overview or discussion page of a group in the right hand corner right about the discussion list there's a option to "search discussions".

      Make sure that you've logged into Facebook via the Settings or System Preferences app--I've noticed that Safari doesn't like the Log Into Facebook popups so you need to make sure you're logged in Operating System wide. And then you need the Facebook app (the free one recommended in the App Store) because iOS opens the Shelfari popups in it (it routes you to it when you tap the Share on Facebook button within the book Edit button). Trust me, I'd much rather an app than all of that workaround, but at least it's a workaround.

      I'm having this problem too--particularly inconvenient in my reading log discussions where I need to update my total book counts in the first post!

      Edit: I am using Firefox, which seems to be a common theme with the problems being posted right now...but my shelves display fine.

      What version are you using? The "problem" version is FFv18.0.

      If you are on automatic update for new versions, you may wish to turn that off. If you have set it to notify you before updating ... just say "no."

      Yep - can't display tag shelves either or group shelves. Sigh.

      Also, when using the book page pop-up to add tags, once you've said to display all tags, you can't go back to the "top tags". Trivial, I know, but when you have as many tags as I do, you have to scroll alllll the waaaaayyyy down to get to the "done" button.

      You can't open the links that say "more" anywhere.

      Grrrr.

    Ive had some issues just recently. It started yesterday and is still happening today.

    1. When I try to bring up my shelf in full view it says the page has fully loaded but the shelf just keeps loading and never actually loads my books so I can see them. This is the same if I try to view others shelves as well. It wont even show the tabs/different selections(To read, wish list, etc) off to the sides, just a completely blank bookshelf. Even when I try to click on one of the tabs underneath to go to specific kinds of books on my shelf nothing changes.

    2. When I reply under someones post I can't go back and edit that last post. (Like lets pay if I posted and someone replied to it and I replied to them I couldn't edit the new one) Instead it will send me to the top, to my first post to edit. The same goes really for any post that isn't individual. And strangely enough instead of letting me edit any of my replies that I may write under someones or my own post it instead sends me up to that persons first post to edit even though it isn't mine and shouldn't be allowed to, all of a sudden the picture that was once my friends turns into mine and it says I can edit the post that I know clearly isn't mine.

    3. Finally on a lesser note: On a persons profile where they write about themselves or whatever else they want to write about, when it goes too far down and has the MORE button when I click on it nothing happens and it's the same on my own page as well.

    Please can someone help explain to me how to fix what's wrong. It seems to be only my computer since I haven't heard my friends complaining about it and when I use my phone it's perfectly fine. My computer updated itself the day before this started so I wondered if there was a link in that but I didn't understand that either since my computer has done tons of updates to itself in the past and its never effected Shelfari or any sites. Please if someone has any clue about what's going on let me know. Thank you.

    My books read in 2013 don't match the part on the right. On the shelf, I have read 4 books but on the right side of the page, where it says your goals, it says you have read 3 book. Am I doing something wrong?

    I hesitate to add my name to the list of people who can't see their stuck-on-loading shelves, because it doesn't look like anything is happening in response to all the reports from people with the same problem. Is there a way that collectively Shelfari users could pressure Amazon to take care of Shelfari? The independent Shelfari always seemed to work better than the Amazon Shelfari....

      Yep, my Shelfari was working like a champ - YESTERDAY. Today it just doesn't load. I was able to click on a book on my mini shelf but no, the larger -holding nearly 3000 books- shelf won't load. I will be devastated if I lose this. Shame on Amazon. Perhaps we need to remind them that while we use and enjoy Shelfari, we are also Amazon customers. Hey, AMAZON: I bought lots of Christmas from you last year - I could just as easily bought it other places for similar prices. DO YOU CARE?

      So, while my shelf has the loading icon going round and round in my Firefox, I opened (the dreaded) Internet Explorer ... and yep my shelf opened like a champ. I have to conclude it's a Firefox problem ... any ideas? Please include DETAILS because while I am a voracious reader I am barely computer literate.

    I can't open Shelves... the problem started when I installed Firefox 18.It works fine with Internet Explorer 9.

      I just went back to Firefox 17.0.1 - now my shelf loads like a champ again. I did turn off automatic upgrades as was suggested.

      Perhaps just choose which browser to open with. When I publish books with CreateSpace some browsers work better than others.

    why should I downgrade 2 FF 17.0.1 while FF 18 is better? read FF release notes...
    also Firefox with Add-ons is so better than Chrome...

      Don't downgrade if you prefer 18. The Firefox upgrade would not open the shelves for me. Internet Explorer did, which told me it was not a Shelfari problem.
      Going back to Firefox 17 solved my Shelfari problem so I didn't have to use IE, which I don't like. Everyone has to choose their own battles.

      I think its Shelfari problem.....Shlefari should be compatible with new browsers -Like Firefox 18-.we can't use Firefox 17 forever.

      I think its clearly a Shelfari/Amazon problem, but since no one there seems to be listening or caring, what to do? I don't use Internet applications that are browser specific. I don't have time in my life to figure out which browser to use for which applications and websites. It's the developer's job to make sure a website works on all major browsers.
      I'd simply switch applications, if I could find one that works like Shelfari. All suggestions welcome.

      agree....Shelfari works fine with Internet Explorer......but have u heard the news? Firefox 18.0.1 is out & guess what? Shelfari is NOT compatible with it. :(

      I concur......This is a Shelfari/Amazon problem, and since Amazon expects to generate sales from Shelfari members, they should correct the problem post haste!

    This is such minor thing I hate to bring it up, but when viewing the full site in Safari for iTouch, it appears that the header wrapper is slightly broken for the site. Where the Shelfari by Amazon.com bar (the very top of the site) should be flush against the search/address bar when scrolled all the way up, there is a brown gap between the two. It does seem to make a difference if one is viewing in landscape or portrait. I am using the version of Safari associated with the latest version of iOS 6.

    Additionally, Safari is the only browser app allowing me to proceed to the Amazon.com sign-in page that shows up when mobile users attempt to login. Is there any particle reason for this lack of support? Otherwise I'd have troubleshot the wrapper on other browsers to see if it was a consistent theme for mobile users.

    I'm experiencing problems logging into Shelfari using the Mobile site. I just bought an iPhone, and was transferring my various links from my iPod Touch.

    When the amazon.com login page appeared, and I entered my information, nothing appeared to happen. However, when I looked at the URL window, there was an incredibly long string of characters, suggesting some kind of error had caused the page to nest back on itself.

    In order to log in again, I had to go to the full site, log in, and then I was able to access the mobile site again.

    I just marked a 'plan to read' book as 'currently reading', and now it shows up 4 times in my 'plan to read section'; when I deleted one, all four disappeared. This happens with any book I change the status of: a duplicate shows up.

      With all the issues we've experienced in the last few months, with the lack of even an acknowledgement by the Shelfari 'team', I have to agree with Stu: Firefox didn't screw Shelfari, Amazon screwed Shelfari.
      I will also agree that FF18 may be of some blame. I don't know what 'upgrades' or benefits are in 18, and since I am not aware of any, I chose to be proactive and to go back to 17.0.1. I no longer have problems with my shelves. Clearly Amazon has no interest in our complaints, so, in my case, it was continue to be aggravated and complain or do what works. I've been criticized roundly here for suggesting going to an older version of FF, but NOT losing my shelves with nearly 3000 books, which I keep as a running journal of what I've read and when I read it, is more important to me than benefits I can't seem to notice and so haven't missed in 18.0. If/when I can finish the word document with all my books by authors and date read, I might care what I might be missing in FireFox upgrades. Until then, I don't.

      You do whatever you have to do so you don't lose your 'shelves.' A project that I'm doing for me and a friend is to make a Microsoft Excel record of our 'shelves.' It's a damn long process, but I want to get it done just in case anything happens.

    I am trying to go to various tags on my bookshelf, but the loading circle just keep on going. Never loads my book images on my sheld and does not allow me to move from tag to tag at this point.

    Lately whenever I try to follow someone, it doesn't actually click the button. So now I can't follow anyone. Also on profiles of members, it won't let me see any more if it is longer then you can see. I'm not exactly sure if this is a problem that others are having, or is it only me?

    Okay, my shelf is now taking forever to load too, and I'm using Safari for Mac. I don't think it's my uni's internet because I'm having no trouble loading just about every other webpage.

    First off, it would be nice if people could put a title on the issue they're posting about so it would be easier for me to see if it has been discussed already.

    Issue: I replied to a thread and there have been several comments made under my reply. I've replied to people who have replied to my post. I wanted to edit my last reply due to a typo, but when I click edit under that reply, the edit screen goes back to my very first reply to the thread and not to the reply I was clicking on.

    The save button is invisible across Shelfari...still very much working for those who know where it should be though (obviously). I'm using Chrome so this isn't part of the Firefox thing.

      I'm not having that particular issue on any of 3 browsers. However, for about an hour today, the Comodo Dragon browser wouldn't show the "combine them" or that other thing at the bottom of a search page. This happens when you are not signed in but use the search anyway. However, I WAS signed-in. Went back to using FF for a while and, then, logged out on Comodo Dragon, logged back-in, and that was no longer a problem.

      Things are getting screwier and screwier.

      Yesterday, I got server errors every time I attempted to use the "Show Current Edits" from the "Books tab" at the top of each Shelfari page. Not a browser-dependent issue. Toward later afternoon, that started working again.

    Alrighty. I went to http://input.mozilla.org/en-US/feedback hit the SAD FACE and sent a complaint, explaining why I went back to an older version. In the box for a link, I used the link for this thread. I hope many of you using Firefox will complain and maybe we'll get some action.

    Web sites in the 21st century are supposed to work on all major browsers, especially if they're owned by a giant like Amazon.com. The site users should not have to report bugs to Mozilla. But thanks for the feedback link--of course, I think it will lead them to this general bug thread for Shelfari, not to a Firefox 18 vs. Shelfari Shelf-specific thread (which apparently hasn't been bumped to the top so everyone can use and access all this discussion in one place.

    Is there anyway to fix the Google Sites issue with the Shelfari widget? I cannot get my widget to show up.

    I am selecting flash - and since I use Chrome to create my widget and it shows up when I create it in Shelfari using Google Chrome - I can't figure out why it won't show up in my google site.

    Most of the time I've been lucky and not had issues others have had, but today one raised it's ugly head! I just went to add a book to two different lists, groups that I'm part of. One is Readers of Romance's February mini challenge; the other is 100 books challenge (2013). Both times, when I clicked on "Save", the list became a paragraph. I changed it back twice in the mini challenge, but when it happened again, left it. Then, when the same thing happened in thee 100 books challenge, I left that as well. Somethimes these things fix themselves, I figure, and if I fiddle with it, I just foul things up.

      You are talking about postings to a group rather than a "list" such as series records, right?

      If so, this has just started happening to me as well and it appears to be browser-independent.

      As Jonetta (Ejaygirl) says below, I, now, have to refresh the page before I can get a post to display properly. (I suspect it does display properly for other readers at that time though.)

      However, if I edit the post, I have to readd the paragraphing.

      Very annoying AND it is the weekend which means Shelfari won't see any of this until Monday afternoon, probably.

    The same thing is happening to me, Marie. I've had two of my lists go crazy on me so I've stopped updating for right now. I tried both Internet Explorer and Firefox. Neither worked correctly.

      I found that if you refresh your screen after saving your post, the message displays appropriately. I don't know why but it's been working for me since it started yesterday. Don't edit your post!

      Lots of members (including me) are reporting this today.

      Until Shelfari returns on Monday to address the issue, we've found that if you refresh the page after you post, all is formatted correctly.

      Sigh.

      This is still not fixed - is Shelfari even working on the problem? It would be nice if Amanda stopped by and at least acknowledged that they are aware of the issue.

      The constant bugs on this site are really getting me down. They fix one thing and two pop up in its place :0(
