    Them's da breaks.

An email address is the only unique identifier that Shelfari requires. Your various family members could always just set up email addresses using the free services available such as GMAIL, Yahoo, etc.

Surely all your family doesn't use only one email address even if only one computer is available.

Austin, You are lucky that Shelfari doesn't restrict membership by ISP address -I have been a member of groups where the security settings are set up that way. DL, the potential downside of registry by free email account is that one person can sign up for multiple free email accounts. This opens the door a little wider for cyber bullies, trolls, and online pedophiles to bounce around virtually undetected if the admins are not paying attention.

May I add: Perhaps an enhanced security setting for younger readers would be prudent. Something that blocks out some of the trashy-looking avatars that I've seen lately would also be helpful.

I can understand a family situation, but there is no reason for one person to have more than one Shelfari account and hide under different names. There are enough organizational tools and tags to catalogue a shelf properly. IMO

You are correct about the possibilities of misuse. Those exist regardless of the forum, though. I, too, participate in sites with ISP detection. However, I know of no public site that limits use to a single ISP - just the assignment of userids. Therefore, one can register from various ISPs and then use all those userids on the same computer. This, of course, is not true for private secured sites.

I see no problem with one person having multiple Shelfari IDs, though. I have two so that I can evaluate security of my DL persona from that other perspective. I know of several members who have at least two Shelfari ids because they use one for personal use and the other for geographic use such as city-specific general work (usually those in the education field) that rotates among like members.

I, too, have been concerned about some of the risk and age-inappropriate material on the site. Don't know what can be done about it, though.

I have no idea what the problem is that Austin is trying to solve. However, if a whole family uses one Shelfari-id, I do not believe that more than one person can be logged on under that id at the same time (I don't know if this is true or not.) If a single computer availability is the issue, then I don't understand what Austin's problem really is.
