My name is Tony and I am a chubby dorky guy (and proudly so). I love movies and music and many other things as well as books. Generally my favorite is sci-fi and fantasy, but I'll read just about anything if it's supposed to be good or interests me in some way (and it's no longer unusual for me to do so). Currently I'd say my favorite... more »

Though fairly simple and straight-forward reading, this book is clever and thought-provoking and sometimes even cute and heartfelt without being being cloying or sentimental. I also think this book may be more influential than it is given credit for (I think Return of the Jedi and Jetsons: the movie took a little something from this at least).

Ok, technically I only finished it last week when I finally read the very last story, but since I read the rest of it during 2012 I'm gonna count it as a book from last year. Beautiful artwork and beautiful interpretations of classic english ballads. The original ballads are included as well and also make for good reading and I have to admit I really enjoyed the historical information in the intro as well as the notes about recommended musical recordings of each ballad.

I was able to read all but the last 2 or 3 stories in this book. It is made of mostly of PKD earliest stories, so he is still trying to find his footing, but many of the stories are still very good and it's nice to see him developing many of his common themes even this early. Many of the stories in this book are also available to listen to on librivox.org if anyone wants to check them out.

As seems to be usual for Octavia Butler this book is intense and powerful on emotional and intellectual levels. this work, more than any other work I've experienced so far, really drives home what it would be like to be a slave, even on a psychological level. The use of a transporting a fairly contemporary character into the antebellum south only made it easier for me to put myself in her shoes, and there were times listening to the audiobook that I genuinely felt like I was thinking the same thoughts. Haunting, and thought-provoking, I can see why this would be read for school.

Clever, funny and thoughtful as always. Though I feel like the main character could have been developed a little further she was still rather interesting, and the subtle way in which she manages to balance "masculine" and "feminine" magic makes an interesting point one's individuality and abilities and how they are not necessarily dictated by gender. Also Granny Weatherwax is great, very funny atypical witch, def looking forward to reading more of the books she's in.

Though the romantic relationship was not quite as interesting as those found in her sisters' works "Wuthering Heights" and "Jane Eyre", I found the main character/narrator to be immensely amiable and appreciated the "only sane person in world of madness" point of view, which made for all sorts of keenly observant commentary on society at the time.

ok, I have to admit I did not read this entire book, but I skimmed through it while I was doing research for class and it has some fascinating and frightening information about the invasion of and/or lack of the population's privacy in our new world of social networking.

Excellent overview of many unfairly overlooked contributors to the rich world of western art. Great mix of education with and offbeat sense of humor and refreshing perspective. Not to mention some beautiful art.

An intense, gripping & fast paced work. Though at times rather disturbing, the unsettling content only served to make me empathize and sympathize with the main character and brought some powerful emotion into the story. It's hard to describe this book. It's a surprisingly cohesive mix of sci-fi and fantasy. It utilizes some archetypes and cliches but twists them around, handles them differently and shows them from an alternate point of view. It manages to be of our time and completely timeless simultaneously. Despite some of it's upsetting content I enjoyed this book immensely. I won't go into details about the ending, but I will say that I found it especially interesting, not quite what I was expecting but completely fitting.

I know it may be strange to review a textbook, but I just felt like it. Though there are occasional moments, particularly passages that deal with a great amount of data or statistics, when the book gets a little dull or bogged down, overall the book was very easy to follow and actually quite interesting. This is my first semester of library school and I have to admit this book did help me get excited about the future.
