  • The Stories in Between: A Between Books Anthology
    • Rated 5 stars

For the 30th anniversary of his independent specialty bookstore, Between Books, Greg Schauer commissioned stories and invited authors from three decades of reading/signing events at the store. The result is an anthology full of every imaginable sort of story from writers such as Jonathan Carroll, Jonathan Maberry, Catheryne Valente, Maria Snyder, Jon McGoran, John Passarella, and yours truly. It's a soupçon of all flavors of weird and diabolical. Recommended.

  • Ghost Ship: The Mysterious True Story of the Mary Celeste and Her Missing Crew
    • Rated 5 stars

A book that reads like a historical thriller...except it's all true. Brian Hicks does an amazing job of detailing the facts surrounding the Mary Celeste, the most famous and most puzzling of all the abandoned ships ever found adrift in the Atlantic. The media of the day behaved exactly as they do now, flinging out lies and hyperbolic nonsense as "explanations", blaming everything from pirates to the missing crew to the ship that salvaged and brought the Mary Celeste in; while our later geniuses of detection blamed the Bermuda Triangle, sea monsters, and, yes, even aliens. The truth of the missing crew's fate as Hicks has worked out is sadder, grimmer and more horrible. This is a great tale of the sea.

  • Patient Zero: A Joe Ledger Novel
    • Rated 5 stars

If you like having your pulse pound out your ears, this is that book. In the vein of Lee Child, Jonathan Maberry's hero Joe Ledger is a take-no-prisoners kind of protagonist...and he'd better be, because he's up against the most horrific approach to zombie creation imaginable. If you're squeamish, do not tread here because this is a slaughterhouse of a book (none of it gore for gore's sake, but none of it pulling any punches either) and there are breathless chapters that will make you walk away awhile so that you stop seeing what you're seeing.

  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
    • Rated 5 stars

Surely one of the best mysteries to cross my path in a long time. Omniscient narrative that weaves in and out of points of view, two story lines that initially seem unrelated but which close upon one another and, in doing so, drive the narrative harder. And horrific revelations the equal of the best Val McDermaid novel. Really, a splendid, splendid book.

A book that hits the ground running and never lets up. An exhausting, compelling, ugly introduction to Reacher.

Currently reading, but so far I am quite awed by Mr. Hill's fine prose. These are stories that get under your skin.

Ian Fleming meets H.P. Lovecraft in a deranged, dare I say giddy, romp by the fine Charles Stross. If you know his fiction at all, this series is not to be missed.

I remember this book quite fondly, but I'm a pushover for Fritz Leiber in any case. It was made into a fine British horror film, Burn Witch, Burn (aka Night of the Eagle) with Peter Wingarde.

An incredibly well-crafted novel. Each line is stunning, the characters drawn to perfection, and Ray a remarkably quiet, fully realized man. Highly recommended.

  • The Stories of Richard Bausch
    • Rated 5 stars

Bausch is, simply, one of the best short story writers alive. And this collection, culled from numerous other Bausch offerings, is just one sharp story after another. From "Valor" to "The Man Who Knew Belle Starr" to "What Feels Like the World"...this is how stories take life.
