I wouldnt read it before Interview with a Vampire, it is part of a series. It tells Lestats story before he met Louis and after right up to modern day. It doesnt really deal with any mythical creatures other than vampires but it does go more in depth in explaining Ann Rice's vision of them, what they can do and what they deal with.
I liked this book better than Interview with a Vampire. Its a continuation or sorts and follows up on what happens to Lestat after he and Louie had their "falling out". And to be truthful I like Queen of the Damned (next in series) even better than Lestat. Read them both.
I read this book about 20 years ago and I didn't particularly like it--but it might have been more a matter of what I was into at the time--lots of very masculine writers with muscular language--I was in college, so I was reading The Beats and Hunter S. Thompson, as well as Don DeLillo and T.C. Boyle. Anne Rice is slow and dreamlike, and her pacing (as I remember) was very languid. Lots of people whose opinion I respect like her very much. "Interview with the Vampire" is the first book in the series, so if you like that, you'll probably like Lestat.
