  • The Lincoln Lawyer
    • Rated 4 stars

Mickey Haller is an LA defense attorney who works out of his Lincoln Town Car. He defends all kinds of people, but mostly those who are from the less desirable areas of the city. He thinks he's finally got the "franchise case" when a wealthy man from Beverly Hills seeks his help. Haller soon realizes that the case is not at all what it seems and will take all his street smarts and legal maneuvering to stay within the law and still keep himself safe.
Michael Connelly has created an interesting, unique character and keeps the action going until the end. A great read for fans of legal thrillers.

This is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about the battle of Gettysburg. Shaara's book is more than just a military study of the Gettysburg campaign. Through the voices of many of the major leaders of the conflict (Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, & Joshua Chamberlain to name a few) he recreates not just the battles, but also shows that these men were indeed human, with weaknesses and failings as well as strength and character in such trying circumstances. I never felt a bias on one side or the other while reading this book. An excellent read for anyone interested in the American Civil War.

  • The Kitchen Boy
    • Rated 5 stars

This was an excellent story of the last days of the Russian Tsar and his family who were executed in 1917 during the Russian Revolution. Using a fictional kitchen boy named Leonka to tell the story, Alexander gives the readers a glimpse into how the royal family was forced to live before their tragic and brutal deaths. The author is definitely sympathetic to the Romanovs, but he still bases his story on historical record and actual letters and notes written by the Romanovs and others during the time prior to their deaths.

Verghese's story is a fascinating tale about a culture I knew little about. Marion and Shiva, twin brothers abandoned by their father after their mother dies in childbirth, are raised by two Indian doctors at a missionary hospital in Ethiopia. Both boys show a gift for the medical field, but circumstances soon part the brothers and the story follows their separate life journeys. The book is fairly descriptive of medical procedures, so it might not be a good choice for those who get squeamish about blood and such.

  • The Reading Promise
    • Rated 4 stars

As a book nut, I definitely enjoyed this book about the commitment between a father and daughter to read together every day. They called it "The Streak", and it lasted for 3,218 days, only ending when the author, Alice Ozma, went off to college. Ozma writes funny, poignant stories about her youth and shares the many books that she and her father read together. I liked that she honors her father without making him out to be perfect and hopefully this book will inspire parents to take up the challenge and read to their children too.

  • Fool's Puzzle

This is the first book in the Benni Harper series and it's a fun, easy read with likable characters. Recently widowed Benni has taken a job as a museum curator in a small California town. While getting ready for a quilt exhibit, an artist is killed in the studio at the museum. Before long, another body turns up and the new sheriff has Benni in his sights. But is he looking at her as a potential suspect or something a little more personal?

  • Confessions of a Prairie Bitch
    • Rated 4 stars

I loved the "Little House" books and grew up watching the television series. Like most fans I "hated" the Nellie Oleson character. It was intriguing to learn about the real person who brought to life the nemisis of Laura Ingalls. With humor and blunt, honest dialogue, Alison Arngrim has written a interesting memoir of her life on and off the set of the beloved t.v. series.

  • Wicked Bugs
    • Rated 3 stars

We are outnumbered. Very outnumbered!! Bugs are everywhere whether you can see them or not. With humor and an easy to read format, Stewart shows how these annoying, sometimes deadly creatures, are a part of our everyday lives and have even had an impact on historical events. This is an informative and often amusing book about the world's bug population and it might "creep" you out a bit, but it's worth the read!

  • The Daughter of Time

Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard is bored while recovering from a broken leg. After seeing a picture of Richard III, he decides to investigate and try to solve the mystery of the princes in the tower. With the help of an American researcher at the British Musuem, he takes a fresh look at the evidence and comes up with a new theory of what really happened. An intriguing, well written story that should entertain readers who do not normally pick out historical fiction. Additionally, Derek Jacobi does an excellent job reading the audio version.
