“Get your gulliver round this book, it's a real horrorshow, o' my brothers! Aha. I'm not even going to lie, to begin with the language really grated on me; it had me rolling my eyes and sighing, and actually so did my first impression of the whole premise of this book and the character of Alex I mean "A thug, rapist, brute, who happens to also listen to high caliber classical music like Mozart and Bach, and speaks in ragtag Shakespearean"? Sounds like the kind of OC any 14 yr old goth writing fanfiction haha. That was my honest first impression and is probably the reason why it had been sat on my shelf for the past 5 years. (I also still haven't watched the film!)
BUT! O' my brothers, how I did a complete 180 on this whole book, the words which once frustrated and irritated became enchanting, musical, and just really... Necessary to this whole world. The actual world and the ideas in this book blew me away, especially in terms of what I was expecting (as you can see, it wasn't much) and maybe that's one of the reasons why I adored it so much. I've never went into a book absolutely abhorring it the first few pages and wanting to throw it down, to loving it and not really wanting to come away from it.
Bottom line, this is a coming of age story like none other, and if you've been putting this off for years like I have give it another chance. Get past the first third of the book and you might have a different opinion! I'm glad I picked this up after being sat on my shelf for so long.”
