Often, people are interested in the current weather in Alaska. Of course, Alaska is a very big state, but you can check the current conditions for my (or any) region by copying into your browser: http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=99769

I just finished reading In a Far Country and I was very interested in your review and your profile. My Granddaughter is in her second year teaching in Shishmaref so I am very interested in that area of Alaska.
Where are you now? -- It looks like you move around in the school systems of that part of Alaska.

Good to see another Alaskan on here. Where are you located? I see Golovin in the handle, but I saw one of your posts on someone else's wall about Sitka. I grew up in Anchorage, but I've lived all over the state (Bethel, Barrow, the Mat-Su, etc.). I now have been living in Sitka for three years, but spent the previous six years in the Juneau-Douglas. Check out my Alaska books group.

I have the book but haven't read it in awhile. It is about the creation of crystal skulls, archeology, occult arts and sciences. As I recall it was a dense read, but may be of interest anyway. I still have it and will probably go back to it at some time.

Another for your TBR pile - just out. The ends of the earth - an anthology of the finest writing on The Antarctic and Arctic edited by Francis Spufford and Elizabeth Kolbert. This is one of those double books - each half printed upside down to the other. Enjoy!

cool - Inner Fish is very good, though I did like Endless Forms Most Beautiful better as far as explaining evo devo. Admittedly Inner Fish is closer to home ;-) I've also got Leviathan on my list. Would dearly love to get a copy of Roy Chapman Andrews book on whaling however. It's way over priced in the antiquarian market. Are you familiar with that one?

Yo Benny - you need to add Iceblink by Scott Cookman to your must reads. It's exceptionally well-done on the Franklin expedition of 1845.

Thanks for the note. I had to look up Susie Silook as her art was mentioned in the book. (see http://www.ewebtribe.com/NACulture/articles/ADN-Artofoutrage.htm)

As a teacher, are you seeing the children learning tradition? Is it still being passed from grandmothers/grandfathers? I remember when my friend first moved to Nome, her stories of the loss of culture and tradition.

B--thanks for keeping me up to date on my post. I have found that 99% of people have agreed with me about reading for school--even most of the educators. My son is now reading "To Kill A Mockingbird" and since I never read it, we are getting through it together. Thanks for your comments. Carol
