When I started my Shelfari account, I lived and taught public school in a tiny Eskimo village of 150 people, called Golovin, hence Golovin_Benny. But now my wife and I live and teach on St Lawrence Island and the village of Savoonga, but I'm not quite ready to be Savoonga_Benny. Next year we are moving far to the south and the community of St. Mary's on the Yukon River.
(If one is of Inuit descent and they live in Alaska, they are referred to, and refer to themselves, as "Eskimo." Those people who would call themselves "Inuit" live in Canada or Greenland. Though they are distant cousins to the population I have mostly worked with, the Inupiaq Eskimos, they are mostly seperate and have little or nothing to do with the Inuits. The population of folks living on St. Lawrence Island are Siberian Yupik Eskimos, really, truly and recently descended from Siberia. You can find this place--St. Lawrence Island-- on the map by finding the largest island in the Bering Strait--the area where Alaska and Russia almost touch. St. Mary's people are Yup'ik [note the apostrophe. It's important.)
Admittedly, I am quite interested in building my own shelf on Shelfari, and every book that I have listed I have read. But I also really enjoy looking at the shelves of other users--men and women alike-- and am always looking for new books, new edges and new friends. I do not feel like a dork telling you this.
If you've read this far, I suppose I should tell you that books on my "Favorites" list are not all necessarily favorites. I feel that some of the titles are extremely important to understanding the world.
