“Many years ago I read a novel based upon the legend surrounding Eva Peron's death. The book had come out not long after the much-hyped Evita film with Madonna in the titular role and touched on a subject you definitely didn't see in the epilogue. It probably isn't common knowledge anymore that after Mrs. Peron's death, her body was painstakingly preserved to the point that she would never decompose. Devotion to "Santa Evita" among her descamisados is legend, transforming her body in death into a prized relic, and the focus of this novel.
Blood Makes Noise tells the story of the conspiracy to hide Evita's body as a means of controlling Argentine politics. CIA agent Michael Suslov, already scarred by a tragic past, becomes involved in the caper and - as Evita affected people in life - becomes ensnared in her web. When tragedy strikes again, he is determined to bury the pain with Evita, unaware that her body hides more than one secret. The race to retrieve her body and restore Peronist rule to Argentina is filled with blood - enough to fill many bodies - though there isn't room anymore in Eva's corpse...as it keeps something more precious.
This is a gripping book, one that reminded me of James Ellroy's style. It's gritty and vivid and steeped in a history we don't get to read in school. If you are fascinated by alternative history in fiction it's worth a read.
