Well, apparently I do read a few more books than I thought I do. Or maybe I just collect them...

This book was recommended to me by a tour guide in Austria right after my Senior year of high school. Joyce Johnson does a great job of sharing her experiences around the beat poets. This launched a summer full of reading for me. I consumed them all and grew my historical view of 1950's America.

    It's a great jumping-off point!

Ayn Rand said that she never wrote an autobiography, but this was as close as it came for her. I liked this as much (but for different reasons) as I loved The Fountainhead. She did a great job of illustrating her philosophies through narrative text.

I really liked this book when I read it a couple (3?) years ago, as told from the viewpoint of a teenage boy with Asperger's Syndrome. Of course all children with Asperger's are different, but this really allowed me to see one view of what worked and what didn't with this boy. It gave me a more personalized view of what a kid like this needs from his teacher and made it less daunting to welcome a boy with AS into my classroom. I think of the teacher in the book a lot and try to emulate her when I'm talking with my student. So far it's working alright and he usually knows he can come to me (just as the boy in the book knew he could go to his teacher for explanations too).

Quick, easy, and enjoyable read if you have an interest in seeing how these kids think and process.

I first read this book when I was in middle school and multiple times since then. It's only one of a couple of books that I have been able to read more than once. Couple this with Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead and I'm reminded that one person really does possess the power s/he will ever need. ;-)
